Chapter 185

Chapter 185

People in the conference room watched as time ticked by, but neither Betty nor Adrian showed up.

Everyone couldn't help but exchange glances and start whispering to each other.

Elara sat in her chair with a cold, hard expression. Her face was so unapproachable that even those sitting beside her who wanted to get information from her didn't dare to strike up a conversation.

After what felt like forever, Ernest finally pushed open the conference room door.

Only then did Adrian walk in. Elara turned to look and noticed his hair wasn't completely dry yet, which made her expression even colder.

Adrian scanned the room full of people who had suddenly gone quiet, then sat down in Betty's usual seat with a slight smile.

"Mr. Evans, where's Ms. Wright? Why isn't she here yet?"

Although Adrian had made great contributions to the Wright Group over the past two years, most people still sided with Betty in their hearts.

Adrian's business methods were absolutely convincing.

But for these subordinates, they still preferred a boss like Betty.

At least they wouldn't be so on edge all the time.

But Adrian said coolly, "What? The meeting can't start without her?"

"Of course not, it's just that..."

Adrian curved his lips slightly, his index finger tapping the table a few times. "I know everyone's still getting used to this, so please start getting used to it from today. From now on, I'm in charge of the Wright Group."

At these words, everyone started discussing in low voices.

Still, a few people stood up, pointed at Elara, and asked directly.

"Mr. Evans, we're all happy to have you back, but why is Elara allowed to come back?"

"Exactly! Mr. Evans, you need to give us an explanation!"

Elara's expression grew colder and colder, but she didn't say a word. She simply stood up and left the conference room.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Seriously..."

Adrian glanced at her once before looking away. "Since everyone's so eager to know, I'll tell you."

"I told her to do it."

"Why?"

"Yeah, Mr. Evans, why would you do that?"

"This is just..."

Adrian's voice turned slightly cold. "Do I need to explain my decisions to you?"

In an instant, no one dared say another word.

Adrian was different from Betty. Betty would listen to everyone's opinions, good or bad.

But after working with Adrian for two years, everyone knew how domineering he was.

Even though Betty still managed the Wright Group, she seemed unable to stop Adrian from doing whatever he wanted.

It was all too clear who was stronger between Betty and Adrian.

So even though everyone present knew there must be some unknown reason why Betty and Adrian suddenly got married, no one dared ask.

Adrian glanced at the group and said flatly, "If you want a reason, just assume I wanted to marry Betty, so I threatened her with the Wright Group."

"What?"

"Threatened? What kind of thing is that?"

"This is completely unreasonable."

"Exactly, treating the company like a joke?"

Adrian tapped the table again. "Anyone else have questions?"

With that question, even the quiet discussions disappeared. Even if people felt indignant, no one dared show it.

After all, Adrian was now in charge of the Wright Group.

Adrian gave the others present a cool glance, leaned back in his swivel chair with his hands clasped, and said lazily. "If there are no other questions, let's start the meeting."

Meanwhile, after leaving the conference room, Elara went to the office.

When she pushed the door open, Betty was coming out of the rest room.

Betty's shirt had been torn again, but fortunately, the rest room had several spare sets of her clothes.

Betty and Elara made eye contact, but neither spoke.

Betty looked away and threw the unwearable clothes into the trash.

Elara watched her back, saw her slowly clenching fists. "Are you okay?"

Only then did Betty turn to look at her and ask very directly. "Have you had sex with him?"

Elara froze, surprised she would suddenly ask such a question, but she still shook her head. "No."

Betty just nodded at this.

Elara didn't know why she suddenly asked that kind of question. "He never accepted me."

Betty glanced at her sideways. "Because he acted human in front of you."

Elara could hear the mockery in her words. She didn't quite know what to say.

Betty sat down in her chair and looked up at her. "Did you need something?"

Elara stared at her for a while, and seeing she seemed fine, shook her head. "Nothing, I'll head out."

Betty quietly watched her leave the office before picking up the intercom. "Come in."

Soon Betty's secretary Vida entered the office. "Ms. Wright, you wanted to see me?"

"Go buy me a box of morning-after pills."

Vida was startled, but quickly nodded. "Okay, Ms. Wright, I'll go right away."

After Vida left, Betty leaned back in her chair and slowly closed her eyes.

After a long while, Betty said something very quietly.

Like she was saying "disgusting."

She slowly opened her eyes and took out her phone to dial a number. "This is Betty. I have a favor to ask, if it's convenient."

"There's a man from Sovereign City named Harry Brooks, who should be around sixty years old now. Can you look up his information for me? Or where he lives now?"

"Okay, thanks. I'll wait for your call."

Harry—this was someone Betty had suddenly remembered last night.

Harry was Sawyer's former assistant, though she remembered Sawyer had left the Wright Group when she was very young.

So much time had passed that she hadn't thought of such a person at all.

She suddenly remembered last night.

Given his age, Harry might know about what happened back then.

There was a pharmacy right across from the Wright Group. Vida came out of the elevator with a bag just as the morning meeting was ending.

The moment Vida saw Adrian, she instinctively put her hands behind her back.

Vida didn't dare move for a moment. She stood to the side and waited until people from various departments got in the elevator before trying to quietly leave.

"Stop."

Vida immediately tensed up. She turned to glance at Adrian. "Mr. Evans, do you..."

Adrian lifted his chin slightly. "Show me your hands."

Vida's expression stiffened, but she didn't move.

Adrian didn't press her, just looked at her.

But his presence and gaze were so intense that sweat started forming on Vida's forehead, even though Adrian hadn't done anything.

Finally, she held out her hands.

Adrian just glanced at them. "What medicine?"

Vida looked at him quickly then lowered her head. "It's morning-after pills..."

Only then did Adrian take the medicine bag from her hand.

Vida immediately panicked. "Mr. Evans, this is..."

"For my wife?"

"I'll deliver it for you."

Vida thought, 'You've already taken it, what can I say?'

So she nodded. "Then thank you, Mr. Evans..."

After speaking, she turned and entered the secretary's office. The next second, Vida called Betty's office directly. "Ms. Wright, the medicine I bought for you was intercepted by Mr. Evans at the door. He said he'll bring it to you. I..."
