Our Truth
Lyra's POV
The tension-filled air seemed electric. I retreated instinctively as the icy steel of the rifle in Ethan's grasp chilled my spine and made my heart race. Although Damian was right next to me and I clutched to him like a solid weight, the pounding in my chest persisted despite his strength.
Ethan watched us, relishing the terror he had instilled, his lips twisting into a sick smile. In the darkroom light, the gun he was holding sparkled, and I could feel the horror seeping into my bones.
"Well, well," Ethan muttered, his tone tinged with derision. "Did you believe this would be simple? Was Damian supposed to protect you from all of this?
Damian rushed forward of me, obstructing my view of the pistol. Although he was a wall of strength, I could tell this was beyond his control by the tightening of his jaw and the panic in his eyes. No, not now.
Damian said, "Ethan," in a low, almost menacing voice. "Put the gun down."
Ethan, however, merely chuckled, his voice harsh and icy. "You believe that you can stop me? Do you believe that I'm scared of you, Damian? I'm not the one who has been manipulating her life, am I?
My stomach plummeted like a stone under the weight of his words. Even though I had always known that Damian had a terrible past, this was something else. He wasn't only responsible for my family's demise. At the center of it was him. The reality couldn't be as straightforward as it appeared, and I had recognized that on some level. However, I had no idea how deep it went.
I felt ill. Betrayed, lost, and not knowing what to do. However, something vulnerable and raw was dragged out of me by the way Damian stood there, intent on protecting me despite this nightmare, and the expression in his eyes. Despite everything, I still needed him in some way.
My voice trembled as I continued, "Ethan, what do you want from us? From me, what do you want?
Ethan's grin wavered just before he took a step forward and his voice became menacing. "I wish to make the truth public." I want Damian to see you for who you truly are. His dark, hateful eyes were fixed on me. Think he's your salvation? Your beloved man? Rethink your mind. You came here because of him. In a game you have never understood, you are a pawn.
Damian remained silent, but I could see the anguish, the sorrow, and the implicit apology in his eyes as they met mine. He was attempting to shield me from this, but his efforts were in vain because the truth had already been revealed and could not be undone.
With a confused and hurt voice, I stepped back from Damian and murmured, "I don't understand." "Why didn't you inform me? What kept you from telling me this?
I could barely breathe as the ache in my chest intensified, squeezing my heart. Notwithstanding my anxiety at this precise moment, I had trusted him, exposed myself, and let myself fall in love with him.
Damian's expression was tight with emotion as he combed through his hair. "I wanted to avoid hurting you. I believed that by keeping you in the dark, I could shield you from reality. From the past, which has been bothering me.
Ethan snorted. "Guard her? You believed that by lying, you might keep her safe. This isn't defense, Damian. It's manipulation. Furthermore, it's too late. Now she is aware.
My heart ached as I attempted to make sense of the man I had loved and the one in front of me as I gazed at Damian. I mistook him for someone else. He was not the man I had thought he would be.
However, something inside of me refused to let go even now in the face of everything—his guilt, the lies, the treachery. I had no idea what that was. The draw between us was too strong for me to ignore, but I wasn't sure if it was love or something else. The bond that had developed amid all the confusion.
"Damian..." With a brittle voice, I whispered. "Be honest with me." All of it. Everything.
With remorse in his dark eyes, he glanced at me before speaking slowly. The reality that had been ripping him apart for so long was revealed in a raw, shattered voice.
"Lyra, my father's business operations caused your family to lose everything. I was at the heart of it, not merely a participant. There was more to the agreement I struck with your father than money. Retaliation was at issue. I was so consumed by rage that I failed to recognize my father's desire to ruin yours. I never understood what it would cost you, but I felt it was the only way to thank him for everything he had done for my family. What we would have to pay for?
To my heart, the words were like a dagger. I couldn't handle the truth of it all, of how deeply Damian was involved.
I shook my head and staggered back, my emotions racing. You exploited me, Damian. To avenge my father, you took advantage of me. You have been deceiving me all along.
With a cracking voice, he said, "I never meant to hurt you." "I promise that I didn't. I believed I could control everything if I kept you close, but I was mistaken. Lyra, I never intended to harm you. I had no intention of hurting anyone. I—" His face twisted in misery as he stopped himself. "I only desired retribution."
Ethan gave a little laugh. Do you hear me, Lyra? All you are is a pawn. One of his sick little pawns. Look at you now; you're as confined as I am. You cannot avoid him. There is no way out of this problem.
With defiant eyes, I turned to look at Ethan. "No." I am not confined. Maybe I was, but no longer. I'm not playing your game anymore, nor anyone else's.
I briefly noticed a glint of rage in Ethan's eyes as his smile wavered. "Lyra, do you believe you can ignore this situation? From the reality? Do you believe that you can ignore Damian?
"I'm at a loss for what to think," I murmured, my voice breaking. I glanced back to Damian, looking for traces of the man I knew in his face. "I'm not sure whether I can forgive you for this."
With remorse in his eyes, Damian answered softly, "I don't expect you to." However, I'm not pleading with you for forgiveness. I want to allow you to see myself for who I am now, not who I was.
Outside, the storm intensified, the windows shaking with the screaming winds. With everything weighing down on my chest, the room seemed to be closing in on me. Even though my body was shaking with emotion, I could sense the growing distance between Damian and me.
But something changed at that same instant. All of the bewilderment and rage vanished, to be replaced by the intense pain of desire and the silent hope that perhaps, just perhaps, we could reunite.
My hand reached out to touch his as I took a step toward him. He didn't back down. Initially hesitant, his fingers touched mine as though to see if this was a dream or a reality check.
I muttered, my voice brimming with unfiltered passion, "I don't know if I can ever trust you again." "I'd like to try, though."
Something calmed the fury inside his eyes, softening them. "Lyra, I'll work hard every day to gain your trust. I'll go to any lengths.
With the weight of everything pressing down on me, I closed my eyes. All of it left me unsure of how to handle the hurt, the betrayal, and the love. However, I couldn't ignore him. No, not yet. Not when the truth was at last revealed.
Just when I thought we might be able to start over, there was a huge crash that reverberated from the corridor. My body was motionless, and my heart stopped.
His face stiffening, Damian's head swung toward the entrance.
"What the hell was that?" With a trembling voice, I whispered.
He opened his mouth to respond when the door sprang open.
And there was someone I never thought I'd see again, standing there, soaked in rain.
My father was the one.
