A Night to Remember

Lyra's POV

A sense of tension permeated the room. Standing in the doorway was my father, chilly and soaked from the rain. The silence was only broken by the sound of his labored breathing and the roar of thunder outside. A mix of terror, perplexity, and rage twisted inside me as my heart pounded against my chest. Beside me, a wall of protection, Damian stood tight, as though he, too, was uncertain of what was ahead.

"What in the world is happening?" My voice felt so tiny and inconsequential in comparison to the storm that was building inside of me, even though I was whispering.

His face hardened as my father's eyes darted between Damian and me. Lyra, he replied in a tight but forceful voice, "I never meant for you to get caught in this mess." However, it's too late now.

Despite the raging storm inside of me, I could feel the warmth of Damian's touch as his fingers tightened around mine. “John, what are you here for? Even though Damian's voice was quiet and icy, I could feel the rage behind it. He had a complicated history with my father, and this was far from ended.

With my pulse pounding, I glanced at Damian. "You anticipated his arrival, didn't you?"

Damian took some time to respond. He instead clinched his jaw and hardened his eyes. He has always been ahead of the game, Lyra. However, I didn't expect he would attend tonight.

With his visage a mask of power, my father stepped forward, his feet heavy on the ground. In a regretful tone, he stated, "I had no choice." "Damian, I made a bargain. In my mind, I could manage it. However, you are aware of its nature. You are powerless over your own decisions.

I was struck like a slap by the weight of his comments. Even though my father's desperation was always there, having him express it out made it seem more agonizing and real.

"You believe that the only person who has made mistakes is you?" The edge of Damian's voice was suddenly keen as a knife. You have no idea how much what I've done has cost? This, however? There is more to this.

I felt like the air between us was exploding with emotion, and it crackled. Neither the anxiety that gnawed at my edges nor the wrath that burned inside of me knew what to do.

As he stared at me, my father's eyes softened, and I noticed a glimmer of vulnerability in his eyes for the first time in a long time. He said in a calmer tone, "Lyra, I didn't mean for you to be hurt." This was never what I wanted for you.

As the emotions threatened to overflow, my gut twisted. Then why? You allowed it to get this far, but why? How come you didn't stop?

With an almost imploring tone, he stated, "I was trying to fix things." "I was unsure of how to resolve it without involving you and without making matters worse."

As my head reeled, I shook it. "Didn't you even think about me? You believed you could control and manipulate me to correct your errors all along.

To ground me, Damian stepped closer and brushed his fingers against my back. “Lyra—"

“No”. I sounded halting. Do not. Do not defend him. This whole thing began with him. We both ended up in this misery because of him.

The reality of it all overcame me and drowned me. Damian's treachery, my perplexity, and my father's despair all merged into a whirlpool of feelings. I also couldn't figure out how to detangle myself in the midst of it.

My father went on, regretting what he had said, "Lyra, you don't know what it was like." "You're not aware of what it was like to feel hopeless and desperate. It was not my intention to ruin you. I didn't want you to live like this.

Yet it was my life. It had been since my father had struck the agreement with Damian when my future had been given to him as a commodity. And now I was unable to find cover, feeling as though I was stranded in a hurricane.

Almost as if to protect me from the words blazing through the room, Damian's grasp on my back tightened and drew me in closer. But I was unable to avoid it. I couldn't avoid the reality.

I said in a harsh voice, "I didn't ask for this either." But now that I'm here. I also can't return.

The suffocating, heavy words hovered in the air. Damian was staring at me with his face so close to mine and his eyes searching mine for anything that would let him know we could overcome this. However, I was uncertain if we could.

With his voice quivering, my father murmured, "I'm sorry, Lyra." It was never my intention to involve you in this. However, it is now impossible to go back.

Then Damian relaxed his hold on my back, and there was silence for a while. As though reflecting the chaos within me, the wind roared against the windows as the storm outside continued to rage. And I felt like everything was weighing down on me in that silence.

"I have to go," I stated in a forceful yet quiet voice. "I am unable to be present. No, not at this moment. To think, I need room.

I turned and left, my footsteps resonating in the deserted hallway before either of them could speak. My heart was in pieces and my mind was racing, but I knew I had to leave. I had to breathe. It was time for me to think.

I locked my bedroom door after stumbling into it. Then, the tears poured quickly and hot, like an uncontrollable stream. I felt overpowered by everything, including Damian's involvement, my father's treachery, and the uncertainty that had influenced every choice I made. I no longer knew who I was or what I was meant to accomplish.

I was surprised by a knock on the door, but I wasn't responding. Right now, I was too exhausted and broken to face anyone. The knocking continued, though.

"Lyra," said Damian, his voice steady and quiet as it entered the room. “Give me access. Could you please?

I wiped away the tears as I closed my eyes. However, my heart was still pounding and wrapped in too many knots. Because of all the hurt and rage I was feeling, I wasn't sure if I could face him.

But I had to stop running. Not from him.

I opened the door, and he entered, his warmth enveloping the room despite the storm raging outside and within. After a prolonged period in which his face was unreadable, he moved forward and closed the distance between us.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he said quietly. "This time, not."

My want was to shout and toss everything at him. The thing I wanted to say was that I couldn't trust him since he had lied to me. The words, however, became lodged in my throat. I simply stood there, allowing the silence to envelop us instead.

A chill went through me when Damian's hands reached out and cupped my face tenderly. Even amid all the suffering, his touch felt so secure and familiar.

“I’m sorry, Lyra,” he said in a breaking whisper. To harm you was not my intention. But you must stay with me. Right now, no. No, never.

I felt something break when I saw how vulnerable his eyes were. Both the agony and the rage persisted, but something else was also present. Something that, despite all, had persisted. Love. Although it was intense and agonizing, the love was there.

My fingers were shaking against his skin as I reached up and touched his face. In that instant, I made a decision. It was me who picked him. Notwithstanding everything.

"I won't be leaving," I muttered. “Not this evening.”

When his lips found mine, they were gentle and fervent, and I released everything. The hurt, the uncertainty, the anger—all of these things vanished as I kissed him, allowing him to take away all of the suffering. The storm, the mayhem, the outside world—it made no difference.

At least not when it was just me and him.

However, we were deep in conversation when there was a jarring knock on the door. The sound brought us back to the present moment like a dagger.

"Damian!" said a voice from the other end. "We're having an issue."

We were frozen. In that instant, I realized that a change was imminent. Yet again.
