CHAPTER 5
JOHNSON'S HOME
In the modest living room of the Johnson household, the air was heavy with an oppressive silence. Aurora cleaned the dining table, her heart racing with unknown anticipation and fear. The creaking of the front door signaled the arrival of her uncle, Thomas Johnson, a man driven by greed and a relentless hunger for wealth.
With a sinister smile, Thomas glanced down at the documents in his hands. Finally, William had delivered on his promise, sealing the deal that Thomas had been relentlessly pursuing for the past six months. It was a win-win situation for him. He knew all too well that Aurora's marriage would be short-lived, as accidents could easily be arranged. Once she was out of the picture, her inheritance would fall into his grasp, along with the added bonus of a lucrative multimillion-dollar deal he had just secured with William Knight. Life couldn't have been any better for Thomas, as his devious plans fell perfectly into place.
Thomas entered the room, his gaze cold and calculating as he looked upon his niece. His eyes narrowed, capturing Aurora's trembling form. With a sinister smile, he spoke in a voice laced with malice,
"Good news, everyone. Our dear Aurora here is getting married."
Aurora stood frozen in place, her eyes wide with shock as her uncle's words sank in.
"Congratulations, my dear," Thomas declared with a triumphant tone, relishing in his perceived victory.
Aurora's voice trembled as she gathered the courage to speak up, her words quivering with desperation.
"U-uncle, p-please... I-I don't w-want to g-get m-married. I b-beg you to re-reconsider."
Before she could finish her plea, a violent slap landed across her cheek, silencing her objection. The room fell into a tense silence as Aurora clutched her stinging face, her eyes welling up with tears of pain and humiliation.
Thomas's voice dripped with venom as he towered over her, "You will do as I say, girl! This marriage is an opportunity for us to gain access to unimaginable wealth. Don't you dare ruin it!"
'B-but...."
"Enough!" Thomas snapped, his voice sharp and commanding."
"B-but I-I don't know him. How..." Aurora stammered, her voice trembling.
"I said enough!" William hissed, his anger cutting through the air.
His words hung in the air, suffocating Aurora's spirit. The weight of his authority bore down on her, threatening to crush her hopes and dreams.
"How dare you speak back, girl!" he bellowed, his voice filled with contempt. Fueled by his insatiable greed and his relentless desire for control, he advanced towards Aurora, his footsteps heavy with menace. Without warning, he lashed out with a brutal punch, targeting her vulnerable stomach. Pain exploded through her body, causing her to crumple to the ground in agonizing torment, gasping for precious breath.
"You should count yourself lucky that Xavier Knight has even considered the idea of marrying someone like you. Show some gratitude, you unappreciative little brat!"
Sandra watched the scene unfold with a smile on her face, until Xavier's name was mentioned. Her face contorted with anger as she saw her dreams of marrying an eligible bachelor slipping away.
She had harbored a crush on him for as long as she could remember. How could he be marrying Aurora? In her mind, Aurora was nowhere near his equal.
"Daddy, you can't be serious! She's marrying Xavier? No way! He's supposed to be mine, not hers!" Sandra's voice burst forth with a potent blend of anger and jealousy. Her eyes blazed with an intense possessiveness, as if staking a claim on Xavier was her inherent right. The sheer audacity of someone else daring to snatch away what she believed was rightfully hers fueled her defiance, compelling her to challenge her father's decision with every fiber of her being.
"William was adamant about Aurora being the choice for his son; there was no changing his mind," Thomas replied, glancing over the documents with a satisfied smile. He was pleased with how everything had unfolded.
"But Dad..."
"That's enough, Sandra. Quit behaving like a spoiled child."
"No, Dad. It's unjust. I am far more beautiful than her!" Sandra's eyes narrowed with venom as she directed her glare towards Aurora.
"He deserves someone of refined grace and elegance. You must intervene, Dad, and put a halt to this wedding. I am the one who should bear the title of Mrs. Xavier Knight! I am deserving of being his wife, not this stuttering mess who can't even articulate a coherent sentence."
"That's enough, Sandra!"
"But..."
"I SAID ENOUGH!"
Sandra's eyes burned with anger and resentment as she directed her fury towards Aurora. In a moment of reckless fury, fueled by her own frustrations and a twisted desire for control, she seized a nearby candle. Without a hint of hesitation or remorse, she callously pressed the searing flame against Aurora's delicate hand, causing excruciating pain to shoot through her body. Aurora's cry of anguish pierced the air, a stark reminder of the cruelty inflicted upon her by someone she had once considered family. The room filled with a palpable tension, the weight of violence and betrayal hanging heavily in the air.
"I hate you Aurora. I hate you!" she screamed
As the scent of burning flesh filled the room, Aurora's fragile frame quivered with a mixture of physical agony and emotional torment.
Tears streamed down her face as she endured the torment, her spirit withering under the weight of her cruel fate.
"Sandra, please behave yourself. You know that everything I do is in the best interest of our family. Now, leave your cousin alone,"
Thomas admonished, his voice tinged with authority.
Reluctantly Sandra let go, cursing under her breath, whilst Thomas took hold of Aurora's arm.
"Now listen closely," he sneered, his voice laced with authority.
"You will comply with this marriage, and every ounce of obedience will be demanded from you. This is the moment I've been waiting for, my chance to finally possess what I've always coveted. Don't you dare think for a second that you can jeopardize it. You are at my mercy now, and you will learn to bend to my will." His words hung in the air, dripping with menace, as Aurora's heart sank further into the depths of despair.
Aurora stood there, rendered speechless.
"Do you comprehend?" Thomas sneered, his grasp on her arm tightening.
Aurora nodded, her eyes filled with fear.
"Speak up! I want to hear your words!"
"Y-yes, I un-understand," she stammered, her voice trembling.
"Good. That's a good girl," Thomas smirked, releasing his grip on her hand as he turned and walked away.
The room was consumed by a suffocating aura of fear and despair. Aurora, her body trembling, held back her sobs, her eyes reflecting a flicker of defiance amid the pain. Deep within her, a spark of resilience ignited, a silent promise that she would find a way to rise above the cruelty and reclaim her shattered dreams.
In that moment, Aurora understood the harsh reality of her situation. Her fate was tied to a man driven solely by greed, a man who saw her as nothing more than a means to an end. But as the flames of her torment burned brighter, a glimmer of inner strength began to awaken within her. She would face the trials ahead, her spirit unyielding, determined to find her own path to freedom and happiness.
A LITTLE WHILE LATER.....
As the moonlight gently streamed through the cracks in the worn curtains, casting a soft glow upon the room, Aurora sat alone in her make shift bed in the kitchen. The pain from the burn on her hand still lingered, a constant reminder of the cruelty she endured at the hands of her own family. With a heavy heart, she began to ponder the upcoming wedding, her thoughts swirling with uncertainty and doubt.
Her fingers gingerly traced the edges of her parents' photograph, the image fading with the passage of time. A bittersweet nostalgia washed over her as memories of their love flickered in her mind. Their laughter, their warm embraces, and the way their eyes sparkled with affection for one another. It was a love that seemed like a distant dream, fading into the shadows as the years rolled by.
Sandra strutted into the kitchen, dressed in night shorts and a spaghetti top, exuding an air of superiority.
"Poor little Aurora. I must say, I feel sorry for you," she sneered, placing a magazine in front of Aurora and tapping on a scandalous picture. The headline read,
"Xavier Knight caught with not one, but two ladies of the night!
Can this playboy ever be tamed?"
Aurora felt her stomach sink as a wave of anxiety washed over her. She knew that her life was about to take an unsettling turn.
"Imagine being married to someone like Xavier Knight. He's notorious for his playboy reputation," Sandra mocked, a smirk playing on her lips. "Every night, he's seen with a different woman on his arm, who most definitely end up in his bed. How do you think a naive girl like you could ever satisfy a man like him?"
Aurora fought to ignore the taunts, but Sandra persisted with her relentless jabs.
"What will you do when he inevitably cheats on you with other women? I mean, seriously, I bet he's been with more women than you've even had a conversation with!"
With a satisfied smirk, Sandra sauntered out of the kitchen, fully aware that her mission to unsettle Aurora had been accomplished.
