CHAPTER 5A

Tears welled up in Aurora's eyes as she longed for the love and happiness she had witnessed in her parents' relationship. She wondered if she would ever find that kind of connection, that deep sense of belonging and contentment.

Her mind drifted to the man she was to marry, Xavier Knight. She had heard whispers of his reputation as a notorious womanizer, and Sandra had only confirmed it.

A man who left a trail of broken hearts in his wake. Doubt crept into her thoughts as she questioned whether he could ever remain faithful to her.

Would she ever find true happiness in a marriage that was arranged for convenience rather than love?

*********

Xavier stormed into the club, his eyes scanning the dimly lit room, taking in the thumping bass and the colorful strobe lights that lit up the dance floor. He made his way to the bar where his friend Alex was sitting, sipping on a whiskey.

"Hey man, what's up?" Alex asked, sensing the tension in Xavier's demeanor.

Xavier sank into the chair, his troubled thoughts swirling like the whiskey in his glass. He took a few shots, trying to drown out the weight of his father's demand, loomed over him.

How could his own father do this to him?

The whiskey burned his throat, providing a momentary distraction from the turmoil inside.

But no matter how much he drank, the bitterness remained. The decision hung over him like a heavy cloud, casting a shadow on his already troubled heart.

Xavier knew he had to face the consequences of his father's choice, but he couldn't shake off the feeling of being trapped.

The room seemed to blur as the alcohol numbed his senses.

Xavier stared into the depths of his glass, seeking solace in the amber liquid. He wished for a moment of clarity.

But for now, all he could do was drown his sorrows and brace himself for what lay ahead.

"Whoa, buddy, what's got you all worked up?" Alex asked, raising an eyebrow.

Xavier sighed heavily. "My Dad! He's just...ugh."

"Your dad? Oh, right. He must have seen the magazine. You really have a knack for making headlines, huh? Maybe you should take some lessons from me on being discreet," Alex said, flashing a mischievous grin.

Xavier ignored Alex's attempt at humor, taking another shot.

Alex chuckled. "Ah, family drama at its finest. You know, Xavier, you always manage to keep things interesting."

Xavier shot him a weary glance.

"Interesting is one way to put it."

"Pray tell, did Uncle William put you on house arrest? Curfew at a strict 8pm?" Alex quipped, a mischievous grin playing on his lips.

Xavier's gaze remained fixed on the amber liquid swirling in his glass, barely registering Alex's attempt at humor.

He downed another shot, the fiery burn of the alcohol temporarily numbing his troubles.

"Alex, this is serious," Xavier seethed.

Alex, sensing Xavier's turmoil, let out a sigh.

"Alright, no more jokes," Alex said, his playful demeanor replaced by a serious expression.

"Tell me, Bro, what happened? How did your father react?"

Xavier sighed heavily, his frustration evident.

"React! Yeah, well, Dad's reaction is just the tip of the iceberg," Xavier muttered, his voice tinged with frustration.

"The real problem goes deeper than that."

His thoughts were a whirlwind of emotions.

"What do you mean?" Alex questioned

He slammed the empty glass onto the table, his knuckles turning white as he clenched his fists. The room seemed to spin around him, a reflection of the chaos he felt inside.

"Alex, it's not just about the magazine or my dad's reaction. It's about everything. My freedom, my independence, my future... all of it is slipping away," he said, his voice laden with frustration and helplessness.

He glanced at Alex, searching for a glimmer of understanding in his friend's eyes. But deep down, Xavier knew that the path ahead was uncertain and challenging. He would need to gather his strength and confront the storm that awaited him, even if it meant sacrificing everything he held dear.

"Xavier, I'm afraid you've lost me. What on earth are you babbling about?" asked Alex, scratching his head in confusion.

Xavier took a deep breath before responding.

"I'm being forced to marry this girl. My dad thinks it's a good match, but I know she's just after my money and status. I won't let her ruin my life."

"Whoa, hold up! You're being forced into marriage? That's a pretty strange punishment, my friend. I mean, sure, you have a bit of a notorious reputation as a playboy, always making headlines with your conquests, but isn't forcing you to marry a bit extreme?"

"Tell me about it," Xavier hissed in frustration.

"Now, who's the unfortunate girl who gets the honor of being your punishment?"

"Aurora"

Alex raised an eyebrow. "Aurora?"

Xavier nodded. "Yeah that's the name. But whatever her name, I'm not interested in settling down, especially not with some gold-digging socialite who's after my money."

"Why is your Dad insisting on the sudden marriage? Didn't get her pregnant, did you?" Alex asked, wiggling his eyebrows mischievously.

Xavier's face flushed with irritation as he replied,

"Very funny, Alex. That's not the reason, and you know it." But a nagging doubt crept into his mind, causing him to wonder if there was more to the story than he had been told. "But Dad would have mentioned it if that was the case," he silently reassured himself.

Dismissing the thought, Xavier plopped down on the chair beside Alex, trying to push aside any lingering doubts.

Xavier took a sip of his drink before Alex asked,

"By the way, what's her full name?"

Xavier looked at him quizzically. "Aurora Johnson. Thomas Johnson's niece apparently. Why?"

Alex's face fell. "Johnson? As in Sandra Johnson's family?"

Sandra?"

Alex shook his head. "Oh man, this could be trouble."

Xavier looked at Alex with a frown. "What are you talking about?"

Alex hesitated for a moment before speaking.

"Aurora's last name is Johnson. She's related to your dad's ex-business partner, Thomas Johnson."

Xavier's eyebrows furrowed in confusion.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

"Sandra Johnson, you remember her, right? In high school, she was relentless in her pursuit of you. With her auburn hair and spoiled attitude, she was the epitome of a social climber. Always chasing after wealthy men and flaunting her family's status.

I've never seen a more materialistic girl in my life. She constantly paraded her family's wealth and looked down on others. And now you're telling me Aurora is connected to that family? It doesn't bode well, my friend," Alex expressed, genuine concern lacing his voice.

Xavier's face twisted with anger.

"That's all I need. A spoiled brat in my life," he spat, before sighing.

"Hey, you know what? Maybe we're jumping to conclusions here. Perhaps Aurora is different from her cousin," Alex contemplated, realizing the potential impact of his previous words.

Taking a deep breath, Alex continued, "Xavier, trust me on this. Your dad loves you, and he wouldn't make any decisions that would intentionally harm you. And who knows, maybe Aurora is nothing like Sandra. Give her a chance, man. You might be surprised," he said, his voice filled with genuine concern and a touch of optimism.

Though Xavier knew deep down that his dad loved him unconditionally, a slight pang of unease gnawed at his gut. He desperately wished to reject the notion that Aurora could be anything like her cousin Sandra, yet Alex's words had ignited a spark of doubt within him.

He pondered whether there might be an element of truth to Alex's cautionary words, raising the possibility that Aurora could possess similar traits. The internal struggle between hope and apprehension continued to tug at Xavier's heart, leaving him uncertain of what to believe.

"You know, Alex, my dad is so determined for this marriage to happen that he even threatened to take away my inheritance and CEO position. I can't figure out what this girl has over him," Xavier confided, frustration evident in his voice.

Alex's eyes widened in surprise as he absorbed the news.

"I don't know what to say, Buddy. But I'm certain your dad must have a compelling reason, something significant, for him to make such a declaration."

Xavier's frustration grew evident as he spoke. "The only reason my dad is so adamant about this alliance is because of some foolish promise he made to Aurora's dad. I can't comprehend why he doesn't just adopt her or find another way to fulfill his promise if he truly wants to take care of her. Why does he have to involve me in all of this?"

Amidst the blaring music and the cacophony of voices in the club, Xavier was consumed by the storm brewing within him.

"I won't let her get away with this. Aurora will face the consequences for toying with my father's emotions and wreaking havoc in my life," he seethed, determination fueling his words.

"Look, Xavier, I know you're angry about your dad trying to force you to marry Aurora, but maybe you should give her a chance. Your dad wouldn't do anything to hurt you, and maybe Aurora is not as bad as you think," Alex said, trying to reason with him.

"Not as bad as I think, huh? Well, any girl who's willing to marry a total stranger is definitely bad news in my book, Alex!"

"Maybe she doesn't have a choice in the matter either," Alex conceded.

"I don't know, man. It just seems like my dad is trying to trap me into marrying someone I don't even know. And now with this new information about her family, I don't know what to think."

"Just don't do anything rash, okay? Think things through before you make any decisions that you might regret later," Alex advised.

Xavier's gaze hardened, his mind filled with doubts and suspicion.

"What is it about Aurora that has my father so enthralled?" he muttered, the bitterness evident in his voice. He downed the remnants of his drink, the glass meeting the countertop with a resounding slam, echoing his frustration and discontent.

Alex sighed, "Well, what are you going to do about it?"

Xavier's grin twisted into a sinister smirk.

"I have a plan. I'll make her regret the day she utters those two words 'I do'. She thinks she can control my life, my freedom? Well, I'll show her what it means to truly lose control. I'll strip away everything she holds dear - the lavish lifestyle, the comfort, the security - and leave her with nothing but tears. I'll shatter her heart and make her existence a living nightmare. She'll be the one left with nothing, while I rise victorious."

Alex shook his head in disapproval.

"That plan sounds really twisted, Xavier. Have you considered that she might not have done anything wrong? Jumping to conclusions and seeking revenge without knowing the full story is not fair to her. Maybe it's worth giving her a chance and understanding her side of the story before making any drastic decisions."

Xavier's voice hardened as he declared,

"I refuse to be controlled or manipulated by anyone, especially not by someone who has used her charm to sway my dad. I won't allow myself to be made a fool. Rest assured, she will face the consequences for her actions. She may not see it coming, but she'll soon realize the impact of crossing me."

Xavier downed his drink in one gulp, his mind already made up. He wasn't going to let Aurora ruin his life, and he certainly wasn't going to let his dad force him into marrying her. He would find a way out of this mess, no matter what it took.
