Chapter 45 - The Midnight Messenger

Chapter 45 - The Midnight Messenger

The city glittered beneath Serena like a million tiny stars, each light burning cold against the night. The rooftop of the Grand Halcyon Hotel was quiet, too quiet—the hum of traffic below muted, the wind sharp enough to sting her cheeks.

She clutched her coat tighter, her breath visible in the chill. Midnight. Exactly as the message said.

Her phone buzzed in her palm.

Unknown: You came. Good. Don’t be afraid.

Her eyes darted around. Shadows stretched long across the rooftop, the red glow of the building’s sign bleeding into the darkness. “Who’s there?” she called, her voice trembling.

A figure emerged from behind the rooftop’s ventilation unit. Tall, cloaked in the dark, moving with deliberate calm. As the stranger stepped closer, Serena’s pulse pounded.

When the light caught his face, her breath hitched.

It wasn’t Nathaniel.

It wasn’t Isla.

It was someone she didn’t recognize.

He was older, with weathered features and piercing eyes that studied her like a specimen under glass.

“You don’t know me,” he said, his voice low, gravelly. “But I know Damian Wolfe. I know him better than you ever will.”

Serena’s grip tightened on her phone. “Who are you?”

He gave a small smile that never reached his eyes. “Call me a messenger. What matters isn’t my name. It’s the truth.”

Her pulse raced. “Then say it.”

The man’s gaze swept the skyline before returning to her. “You think Nathaniel Crane is Damian’s greatest rival? He isn’t. Damian’s greatest enemy… is himself. And the trail of destruction he’s left behind to protect his empire.”

Serena’s chest constricted. “What are you talking about?”

The man reached into his coat and pulled out a flash drive, holding it between two fingers. It gleamed in the rooftop light.

“Inside this drive,” he said slowly, “is proof of what Damian did to secure his empire. Deals buried. Families ruined. Blood spilled—not always literally, but sometimes close enough.”

Serena’s breath came fast, her mind spinning. “Why are you giving this to me?”

“Because you still believe you can change him.” The man’s expression hardened. “But you need to see the man behind the mask before he drags you down with him. The truth will either set you free… or destroy you.”

He stepped closer, pressing the flash drive into her palm. His hand was cold, his grip unyielding.

“Choose wisely, Serena Hayes.”

Her fingers closed around the device instinctively, the weight of it suffocating.

She shook her head, her voice cracking. “Why me? Why now?”

The messenger’s eyes softened for the first time. “Because you’re the only person Damian might still care about enough to listen to. But if you don’t face this truth, someone else will put it in the headlines—and when that happens, it won’t just be his empire that burns. It’ll be you, too.”

Serena swallowed hard, fear tangling with fury. She wanted to hurl the flash drive off the rooftop, to reject the poison dripping into her life from every angle. But she couldn’t. Her hand stayed closed around it, as if it had already claimed her.

Before she could speak again, the man stepped back into the shadows. “Midnight’s over. You have what you need.”

And then he was gone, vanishing into the darkness as if the night itself had swallowed him whole.

Serena stood frozen, her heart hammering, the flash drive searing into her palm like fire.

Behind her, the rooftop door creaked open.

She spun, breath catching—only to see Damian stepping out into the cold, his silhouette outlined by the glow of the city. His eyes found hers instantly, sharp and searching.

“Serena,” he said, his voice low, taut with something between relief and suspicion. “What are you doing here?”

Her hand clenched around the drive, hiding it in her fist.

The lies, the secrets, the truth she wasn’t ready for—all of it surged inside her, tearing her apart.

“Nothing,” she whispered, forcing the word past her lips.

But Damian’s gaze darkened, lingering on her clenched fist, his instincts sharpening like a blade.

And in that moment, Serena knew he could already sense the fracture widening between them—one secret away from collapse.
