Chapter 44 - Fractured Loyalties

Chapter 44 - Fractured Loyalties

The elevator ride to Damian’s penthouse felt like an ascent into a storm. Serena’s reflection in the mirrored walls looked pale, her eyes ringed with shadows, her fists clenched around her bag. Inside, the envelope still burned like a brand, its contents carved into her memory.

When the doors slid open, Damian was already there, pacing, his jacket off, sleeves rolled up, tie discarded. His head snapped up at the sound, and the relief in his eyes was instant.

“Serena.” He strode forward, reaching for her.

She flinched back, the rejection sharp enough to halt him in his tracks.

“Don’t,” she said, her voice low, trembling. “Don’t touch me.”

The words sliced deeper than any knife.

Damian’s hand dropped. “You went to him,” he said quietly. “Crane.”

Serena set her bag down with deliberate calm, though her body shook. “Yes. And he showed me everything you wouldn’t.”

Damian’s jaw flexed, his knuckles whitening at his sides. “What did he give you?”

She pulled out the envelope and tossed it onto the table. The papers spilled, contracts and bank records splayed under the soft light like evidence at a crime scene.

Her eyes never left his. “You paid me. You wrote our marriage into a transaction. You erased my debts like I was another deal to close. And you never told me.”

Damian inhaled sharply. “Serena—”

“No!” The word burst out of her, raw and furious. “Do you have any idea what it felt like to read it in his office, with him smirking at me? Do you know how humiliating that is? I should’ve heard it from you, Damian. From the man who says he loves me.”

The room vibrated with silence.

“I was trying to protect you,” Damian said finally, his voice rough, pleading. “When we began, yes—it was a contract. I needed an image, and you needed help. But it stopped being that. You stopped being a deal the moment I…” He broke off, dragging a hand through his hair, his eyes blazing. “The moment I realized I couldn’t breathe without you.”

Serena’s chest tightened. His words struck at the part of her that still wanted to believe him, the part that longed to collapse into his arms and forget. But the documents—the proof—flashed before her eyes.

“Love isn’t silence,” she whispered. “Love isn’t manipulation. You kept me in the dark because you wanted to control the story, Damian. Just like you control everything else.”

Damian stepped forward, desperation bleeding through every line of his body. “I was going to tell you. I swear it. But every time I looked at you, I couldn’t bear the thought of you seeing me the way Isla, the board, the press see me—as a monster who only knows how to buy loyalty. You’re the one person I wanted to see me differently.”

Her throat ached, tears brimming, but her anger kept her upright. “And now I don’t know who I see.”

He reached for her again, but she stepped back until her spine hit the wall.

“I’m not Isla,” Serena said fiercely. “I don’t want your money. I don’t want your power. I wanted you. But maybe that’s all you’ll ever know how to give—a contract and a price tag.”

Damian’s face crumpled for a heartbeat, but then the steel snapped back in place. His voice dropped, sharp and dangerous. “And what about Crane? Did he make you feel seen? Is that why you went to him?”

Serena’s eyes widened. “You think this is about me and Nathaniel? Are you kidding me?”

His jaw tightened, and for a second she saw the old Damian—the ruthless CEO, the man who trusted no one.

Her heart broke all over again.

“I went there,” she said, her voice cracking, “because I couldn’t live with your silence anymore. But maybe Nathaniel was right. Maybe you’ll always see me as a liability you need to manage, not someone you could ever truly love.”

The words struck him harder than any slap.

The silence between them was deafening. Damian’s chest rose and fell, ragged, as if he were holding himself together by sheer force. Serena turned toward the door, her body trembling.

“Serena.” His voice was a broken whisper.

She froze, back to him, hand on the doorknob.

“If you walk out right now,” Damian said, each word weighted like iron, “you’ll be walking straight into Crane’s hands. And I won’t be able to protect you.”

Serena’s throat tightened. The choice loomed over her like a noose: stay with the man who lied, or step into the arms of the man who weaponized the truth.

Her hand twisted the knob.

And then her phone buzzed.

A new message.

From an unknown number.

She glanced down, and her blood ran cold.

Unknown: If you want the whole truth about Damian Wolfe, meet me tonight. Alone. Rooftop of the Grand Halcyon Hotel. Midnight.

Her breath caught, the words searing into her.

Another secret. Another choice.

And Damian had no idea.
