CHAPTER 19
The air in the room is thick with tension, the kind of silence that follows a sudden confrontation—unexpected, unsettling. I don’t know if it’s because of the way Kieran appeared on the doorstep or the look in Evan’s eyes, but everything inside me feels like it's teetering on the edge, unsure whether to tip into chaos or calm.
I glance between Kieran and Evan, trying to process everything that just happened. Kieran’s presence here, in this space that felt so heavy with Evan’s unspoken words, is almost like a tangible shift. It’s as if the ground beneath me has cracked open, and now I have two paths laid out before me, each as uncertain as the other.
Kieran stands there, looking at Evan with a quiet confidence, his stance relaxed, though there’s an edge to his gaze. Evan, on the other hand, is rigid, his posture stiff as he watches Kieran carefully. Neither of them says a word at first, but I can feel the tension in the air, like an invisible rope stretched too thin between us all.
Finally, Kieran breaks the silence, his voice light but carrying an undeniable weight. "I wasn’t expecting a reunion, but I’m glad I caught you both." His eyes flicker toward me, a soft smile tugging at his lips, as if he’s trying to ease the situation. But I know better. There’s a purpose behind his words, something calculated.
Evan narrows his eyes, his jaw tightening. "I didn’t expect this either." He’s trying to mask the irritation in his voice, but it’s impossible to hide the flicker of discomfort. There’s a battle here—one between the past and the present, between what we are and what we could be. And I can feel every ounce of that tension in my chest, squeezing at my heart.
Kieran doesn’t back down. He meets Evan’s gaze with a calmness that seems to unsettle him. "I figured we might need to have a chat, the three of us." His tone is neutral, but I can hear the underlying challenge. It's a wordless declaration that he’s not afraid to step into the role he’s playing in my life.
I swallow hard, my heart pounding in my chest as I look between the two men who stand before me, both of them offering something I’m not sure I can accept. I never imagined this moment would arrive—where my life, my decisions, and my relationships would collide so violently. Where everything I’ve been trying to ignore, push away, comes rushing to the surface in one swift, overwhelming wave.
I take a deep breath, trying to steady myself, but it’s hard to focus on anything other than the fact that both of them are here. At the same time. In my space. Kieran’s calm and unwavering presence contrasts with the storm that Evan carries in his eyes. But it’s not just their differences that make this situation so complicated. It’s that I’m caught in the middle.
"I didn’t know this was how you wanted to handle things, Kieran," Evan says slowly, his words measured but sharp. "I thought we were going to give her time to figure things out, not force her to choose."
Kieran shrugs, the faintest of smirks curling his lips. "I’m not forcing anyone to do anything, Evan. Just giving her the space she needs to make up her mind. You know, real clarity." There’s a bite in his words, something more than just the playful teasing he usually carries. I can feel it, the subtle challenge in the air, as if Kieran is marking his territory without even realizing it.
I don’t know whether to be irritated or relieved by his boldness. I’ve always admired Kieran’s straightforward nature, his willingness to take risks. But right now, it feels like everything is about to erupt, and I’m standing in the middle of it all, trying to keep my balance.
"Do you think this is the right time?" Evan’s voice drops, and there’s a sharpness to it now, a raw edge. "To bring this all to the surface? To have a conversation like this? We have a lot to figure out, Marga." He takes a step closer to me, his presence overwhelming. "I’ve been trying to understand where we stand, where you and I stand. But this… this complicates things even more."
I glance at Kieran, who stands a few feet away, his eyes meeting mine with a quiet understanding. He’s giving me space, allowing me to breathe. But I can feel the weight of his gaze on me. He’s waiting for me to make a decision. And so is Evan.
I’m not sure what to say, or if anything I say will even make a difference. Everything feels so uncertain, and every word I speak only seems to add more weight to the already unbearable silence.
"Maybe it’s better that we all talk now," I say, my voice shaky but determined. "I don’t want to keep avoiding this. I need to know where I stand too. With both of you."
The words come out more fragile than I’d like, but there’s something freeing about saying them aloud. I’ve been holding onto so much, pretending that I could figure it all out on my own. But the truth is, I can’t. I need answers, just as much as they do.
Evan nods, his jaw tightening. "Fine. Let’s talk."
Kieran doesn’t move, but I can see the tension in his shoulders. "I’m glad you’re ready. I know this isn’t easy, Marga. But it’s better than leaving things unresolved."
The way he says my name, with such quiet conviction, makes my heart ache. There’s no pretension, no expectation—just Kieran, as always, offering something real. And I wonder for a brief moment if I’ve been holding onto the wrong thing. Maybe what I need is someone like Kieran, someone who can ground me, someone who can make me feel like I’m enough.
But there’s Evan too, with his complexities and his emotional pull. He challenges me in ways I never thought I could handle, and yet, every time I walk away from him, I feel like I’m leaving a part of myself behind.
"So, where do we go from here?" I ask, my voice barely above a whisper. I’m not even sure if I’m speaking to Kieran or Evan. Maybe I’m speaking to myself.
Evan exhales sharply, frustration flickering in his eyes. "I don’t know, Marga. I don’t know how much more I can give. I’ve been honest with you about everything, about what I feel. But you—" He looks at Kieran, his eyes narrowing. "And now this. I’m not trying to fight with you, Kieran, but this isn’t how I imagined any of this."
Kieran holds up a hand, his expression calm but firm. "I’m not here to fight, Evan. I’m here because Marga needs space to make a decision. And you’re not going to rush her into anything."
I feel my chest tighten, the tension between them so palpable, it feels like the air is charged. I want to scream, to run away from this moment because it’s too much. But I can’t. I need to face this. I need to make a choice, even if it feels like I’m walking blind into the unknown.
"Marga," Kieran says softly, his voice low, coaxing me out of my head. "It’s okay to take a step back. You don’t need to figure it all out right now. Just tell us what you need. We’ll listen."
I turn to face him, my heart beating wildly in my chest. The world outside feels distant, a blur of noise and movement, while here, in this room, it’s just us. Just three people caught in a moment that feels suspended in time.
I take a deep breath, looking between Kieran and Evan, trying to find something in their eyes—some hint, some sign, some sense of clarity. But all I see is the same uncertainty I’m feeling. I don’t know what comes next, but I know I can’t run from this. I can’t pretend anymore.
"I need time," I say quietly. "I need time to figure out what I want. What’s best for me."
Kieran nods, stepping back slightly, a faint understanding in his eyes. "Take all the time you need, Marga. We’re here for you, in whatever way you need us."
Evan’s expression softens, though there’s still a trace of frustration in his eyes. "I just want to know if there’s a chance for us, Marga. If there’s any future for us."
I look at them both, my heart torn between them. But in this moment, there’s only one thing I know for sure—I’m not ready to make a decision yet.
