Chapter 94 She's awake
"She was shot," I told him, realizing I wouldn't be able to keep something like this from him for a long time. Not only that, I could tell Nova wouldn't be pleased to hear I kept this from him. She would want him to know seeing how close they were. So close, it made me angry each time I thought about it.
"Shot?!" He screamed from the other end, his voice almost deafening. "When did that happen? Where is she? Did you find the one who hurt her? Where is the bastard??"
"If I did know that, do you think I would be here listening to you?" I scoffed at that, crossing my legs as my gaze returned to the door. I saw three doctors enter the room Nova was lying in, but I didn't move towards them because of the call I was having.
"Where are you guys? Is she in the hospital? Which one?"
"I don't -"
"Mr Dashiell, your wife has woken up!" The nurse who was in charge of watching her said, rushing out of the room with a cheerful expression on her face. She was barely keeping the smile off her face. "Really?!" I jumped to my feet, disconnecting the call without responding to Brion's questions. At the moment, the only thing I could think of was seeing my wife. Hearing she was awake after sleeping the whole day was the best news ever.
"Yes, sir. She just "I ran past her, to the door. Throwing it open, I dashed into the room, my eyes landing on the bed where Nova was currently leaning on the bed. Though she looked as pale as she did when I last saw her, there was a rosy colour on her cheeks.
"Nova?" I rushed over to her, sitting by her bed as I ignored the doctor standing on the other side. I took her hand in my mind, staring at her with teary eyes. "How are you feeling?" Seeing Nova alive, looking at me like this, gave me the best feeling ever. I felt all tingly inside. The lightness I felt was unlike any other like I could fly to the highest mountain if I so desired.
"How did you find me?" Her voice was low, almost like a whisper. Had I not been close to her, I wouldn't have known her spot.
Holding her hand, I earnestly looked at her, gulping before I responded. "I heard screams when I rushed out to look for you. Luckily, someone called an ambulance before I arrived, just in time for them to save you."
She nodded, too weak to say a word. She leaned back on the pillows stacked on her back, looking tired from the few words she spoke.
"She needs her rest, Mr Dashiell. Don't worry, she will be back on her feet within a week," a doctor reassured with a smile as he reached towards her, to help her lie down, but Nova shook her head, glaring at him. "You need to rest, Mrs James. You can't just -"
"How long was I out?" Though her voice was still low, it was audible this time, showing how much she worked to speak.
"A few hours," I responded before the doctors could. "It hasn't been that long, don't worry." I smiled at her to ease her worries. "You need your rest. Don't think of anything else, like the doctors said," I coaxed with a smile, praying she would do.
She opened her mouth to talk, only for my phone to ring at that moment. Knowing who it was, I ignored it, smiling at Nova, who gave my phone a dark glare as if it were the cause of her misfortune. "Aren't you going to answer that?" She demanded, her eyes still narrowed.
"Not at all." I switched the phone off and pocketed it. "It's just a client who has been calling non-stop. It's nothing of importance." I smiled at her.
"Oh."
"So, just lie down a bit." I got up from the chair and helped her to lie on the bed, smiling as I did that. "You need your rest, so you won't open the wound." I looked pointedly at her chest as I said that, not in a lewd manner. I would be a monster if I felt that way while looking at her.
The doctors sighed in relief when I finally had her down, making me wonder who it was that helped her sit in the first place because they didn't seem like they did that. Could it be the nurse with them? As I looked towards her, I got the answer to the question. She was indeed the one.
"How is she, doctor?" I turned to the doctors after making sure Nova wouldn't try to rise from the bed because that seemed like the thing she would do the most.
"She's okay. We just need to watch her for a week before we discharge her because of -"
"I'm not staying here for a week," Nova said, stubborn. "I'm leaving after tomorrow. I have some things to take care of."
"Yes, you are," I said, so she wouldn't get winded and open her wound, which was my fear. I needed her to think I was supporting everything she did, and not refuting it. "You won't stay here for a week, don't worry." I reached over and ran my fingers through her hair, loving how silky smooth it was. For the first time since she returned, Nova let me touch her hair. Aside from when we had sex, she never allowed me close enough to her to touch.
She smiled an expression that made my stomach flip. It seemed as if she shot an arrow right at my heart.
"Sir, you can't -"
I raised my hand to stop the doctor before he could say more. "Let me take care of this now. If there's nothing else you are checking, you can leave." I gestured to the door, smiling at her as I did so.
