Chapter 269 Counterkill
Just as things were about to go south, Sophia quickly scanned the area and spotted a slingshot on the ground. It looked like a cheap, wooden one, probably dropped by some kid.
An idea sparked in Sophia's mind. She grabbed the slingshot and swiftly loaded a small stone.
With steady hands, she pulled back the slingshot and aimed at the kidnapper's wrist.
A sharp sound followed as the stone flew out, hitting the kidnapper's wrist dead-on. The kidnapper screamed in pain, dropping the gun, which clattered to the ground.
The kidnapper, now weaponless, showed a flash of panic in his eyes and tried to retreat, but the bodyguards had already reacted. They rushed forward and restrained him again.
"You maniac!"
The bodyguards pinned the kidnapper to the ground, handcuffing him once more.
Despair and anger filled the kidnapper's face. This time, he was truly done for.
"Take him back to the station!" one of the bodyguards ordered coldly.
This time, instead of putting the kidnapper in a police car, David's bodyguards personally escorted him.
David stood there, stunned, watching Sophia's seamless actions. He couldn't believe that the person who had just saved Daisy from the kidnapper was his wife of four years.
How much had Sophia been hiding from him?
Sophia noticed David's surprise but what could she do?
She couldn't just stand by and not save Daisy to keep her identity hidden.
Oh well, this wasn't the only secret she had. Even if David found out she could fight, so what?
Was David going to challenge her to a duel?
Unlike David, Carol looked at Sophia with admiration. She finally understood why everyone at the law firm trusted Sophia and willingly followed her lead.
Sophia had a natural leadership quality that drew everyone's attention.
She was born to be the center of attention.
After the kidnapper was captured, the police investigation and evidence collection quickly led to judicial proceedings. The kidnapper was charged with kidnapping and, due to the use of a weapon and the severe threat to others' lives, was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Sophia wasn't surprised by the outcome, but she still felt a pang of compassion and sent money to the hospital to ensure the kidnapper's daughter received treatment.
As for what would happen to the girl after she recovered, that was beyond Sophia's control.
"You are just too kind."
Carol downed her coffee and tossed the empty cup into the trash can at her feet.
"It wasn't much money, just doing a good deed for the kid."
Sophia instinctively touched her stomach.
Carol's phone screen lit up, catching her attention, so she didn't notice Sophia's small gesture. But Sophia noticed Carol's phone screen and teased, "Your boyfriend asking you out again?"
"Boyfriend? It's just..."
Carol didn't know how to explain. After the day Daisy was kidnapped, Zachary, who had given Carol a ride, added her contact information under the guise of being her savior.
He checked in on her daily, often sending snacks and flowers. Everyone could see he was pursuing Carol.
Zachary was a well-known playboy in Harmony City, famous in the upper circles. Carol knew of him but had never met him in person. She never expected to meet him this way.
Rumor had it that Zachary once had a record of dating seven girls in one night, and his longest relationship lasted less than two weeks. Carol couldn't possibly accept someone like him.
Perhaps no one had ever rejected Zachary before, which only fueled his desire to win Carol over. He had sent gifts for three consecutive days.
But no one believed Zachary was serious this time.
The entire law firm was betting on how long Zachary would last this time.
"A week."
Leonard held up one finger.
No more than that.
"Maybe Mr. Stone has found true love this time."
Sophia blew a kiss to Carol from across the room. Carol waved it off dismissively, but Sophia just smiled brighter, making a grabbing motion with her hand.
"Ms. Elise landing Zachary? Child's play for someone like her."
"If it were a court case, I'd trust Carol. But dating..." Leonard trailed off, but everyone got the point.
Carol was known for being emotionally detached. Winning her over wasn't easy. And Zachary, the serial flirt, didn't exactly have the patience for that kind of challenge.
As Sophia and Leonard gossiped, Sophia's phone screen lit up.
Leonard's sharp eyes accidentally caught a glimpse of the message on Sophia's phone.
It was from David.
Leonard wanted to pretend he hadn't seen it, but when his eyes met Sophia's, he knew he couldn't hide it. Sophia realized he had seen it.
Leonard gave an awkward smile and retreated to his office.
He didn't want to get involved in the drama between his former and current bosses.
Sophia had been annoyed lately. David kept changing his phone number to message her. Sometimes he checked in on her, other times he urged her to go to the hospital for a check-up.
Sophia ignored him, blocking each new number David used.
But David had developed a new habit...
A black luxury car slowly pulled up outside Sophia's office building, the setting sun casting a warm glow on the windows. Inside, David's expression was far from warm; it was tense.
Since Daisy's kidnapping, he had been worried about Sophia's safety and health.
He wanted to take Sophia to the hospital for a check-up, but she refused. So this time, he brought the doctor to her. As long as he could see Sophia, David could arrange for the doctor to examine her.
Sophia looked disdainfully at David, who had barged in uninvited.
"What are you doing here?"
"I brought a doctor to check on you," David said in his gentlest tone.
Recently, Lucas had analyzed David's failed attempts to win Sophia back and found that his cold tone was a major factor. So this time, David tried to be smarter.
"No need." Sophia rejected him flatly. There was no way she would go to the hospital with David.
"No way! You have to go!"
After just two sentences, David's true colors showed.
"I said I'm not going!" Sophia's voice rose, her eyes flashing with anger and determination. "And Mr. Jones, we're divorced! Please don't show up in front of me again."
David was stunned, feeling a wave of loss and pain. He hadn't expected Sophia to reject all his concerns so firmly.
"Sophia, I just want to help you," he said, his voice low and tinged with helplessness.
"I don't need your help." Sophia's tone was cold, but her gaze was unwavering.
David, eyes red with anger, turned and left. The doctor who had come with him could only follow, carrying the medical kit. But David hadn't gone far before he turned back, grabbed the medical kit from the doctor, and placed it on Sophia's desk.
"Use it as you see fit!"
After David left, Leonard finally dared to enter Sophia's office. He eyed the medical kit on her desk and couldn't help but comment.
"So, this is what rich people give as gifts when they're dating. Pretty unique taste."
"This isn't dating."
"Right, not 'dating.' He's just pursuing you, isn't he?" Leonard grinned mischievously.
"You need to lay off the romance novels."
Sophia worried that Leonard might get so caught up in video games and fiction that he'd lose his sharp legal instincts.
That would be a real loss for Fortune Law Firm!
As Leonard and Sophia continued their playful banter, David had already returned to his car.
Just as he was about to leave, his phone rang. It was Lucas. David answered, hearing Lucas's voice, "David, free tonight? Let's join Alexander for his last night as a bachelor."
"Sure, I'll be there soon." David drove towards the bar, thinking maybe he did need a drink to forget about Sophia.
At the bar, David settled into a booth and ordered a strong drink.
"David, what's on your mind?" Lucas sat beside him, patting his shoulder, curious about David and then glancing at Alexander.
"Everyone else's bachelor party is a celebration, but ours feels like a funeral. What's going on?"
