Chapter Thirty-Eight
The Daring Escape Plan
“Who is that?” Alia asked Edgar.
“Harry, my beta.” Worry filled Edgar’s eyes. “As my beta it is his duty to stop her from escaping. I hope she doesn’t hurt him.”
Alia’s heart raced and tears stung her eyes. Elena couldn’t get away with the baby. Alia would do anything to get just one look at the baby she’d carried for nine months. Adrenaline fueling her, she ran ahead of Edgar, desperate to stop Elena before she escaped. Despite running at lightning speed, faster than any wolf in existence, at that moment Alia felt like she was running in slow motion. Eventually she glimpsed Elena ahead of her, holding the baby while her goons hit and punched Harry.
Harry managed to stay on his feet but he was outnumbered by Elena’s goons. Alia’s fury rose inside her. How dare Elena beat up Edgar’s beta when she was the one kidnapping Edgar’s heir? Elena stopped dead in her tracks. Before she even realized it, a powerful force field formed. The force field flung the goons into the air, freeing Harry from their attack. Elena wasn’t affected by the force field, and neither was Harry. That didn’t bother Alia, but Elena being unaffected made her wonder if the baby was protecting Elena. Her chest tightened. Did this mean the baby was already bonding with Elena? No! She wouldn’t let that happen as long as she was still alive. Alia snapped out of her thoughts and assessed the situation. With no backup, Elena was weighing her options of escaping alone.
“Run!” Alia shouted at Harry. She saw Elena reach for the gun strapped to the holster on her jeans.
Harry turned her way for a brief moment. Edgar was still behind her, running as fast as he could to catch up with her.
“Harry! Run!” Alia screamed again.
Harry ignored her frantic screaming. Instead, he grabbed the baby in the same instant Elena reached for the gun. Elena fired at him repeatedly.
“Harry!” Edgar’s scream was raw and guttural. “No!”
Alia opened her mouth to scream but all that came out was a choked sob. Blood flew in the air and as Elena ran towards the closest getaway vehicle. Edgar raced towards Harry while Alia remained rooted to the spot. After what seemed like an eternity, she sprang into action and ran towards Harry, who hadn’t let go of the baby. She grabbed the baby from his hands just as he hit the ground.
Alia brushed away her tears as she gazed at the beautiful baby boy dressed in blue.

Edgar was torn between wanting to hold his child and save his beta. Elena, it seemed, was escaping without the baby or her army. A warning went off in his mind. It all seemed too easy. Elena would never just give in. What did she have up her sleeve?
Edgar’s heart ached as he rushed past Alia holding their baby and checked on Harry. “Harry?”
Blood stained the front of Harry’s jacket and streaked his face. He lay motionless on the ground, his eyes closed.
“Harry!” Emotion welled up in his chest. Edgar glanced at Alia and his baby. Out of the corner of his eye he spotted Elena holding something in her hand.
Just then Harry stirred. “Edgar?” Harry croaked.
“I need to move you out of here.” He glanced at Elena, who was still holding what looked like a chunky remote control device in her hand and staring at her Utopia.
Harry snapped his fingers and the blood disappeared. He grinned at Edgar. “Just a little trick I learned when I accepted my magic.”
Edgar smiled. “I’m glad you’re okay. Please get Alia and the baby out of here.”
Harry jumped to his feet and checked on Alia and the baby. Edgar made his way to Elena.
“Take one more step and I’ll blow up this place with everyone in it!” Elena warned Edgar.
Edgar froze. She had a detonator in her hand. His entire army was still inside Elena’s twisted fantasy world. Didn’t she care about her army who’d defended her inside? “Elena, please don’t do this.”
“You lost the right to speak to me when you bedded your surrogate,” Elena said, her finger hovering over the button.
“You don’t need to do this!” Edgar repeated.
“I do have to. What do I have to live for? You chose a human to replace me. You uncovered my plan. No doubt the Elders and everyone in the werewolf communities worldwide know what I’ve done. I might as well kill everyone here and face the music instead of going to jail without spilling a drop of blood.”
She really was sick and twisted, Edgar thought. He had two choices: he needed to grab the remote out of her hand to keep her from blowing up the place, or he needed to get everyone out of there before she blew up the place. Edgar sighed. The latter was next to impossible. That left him with the former. Would he be able to fight his Luna without blowing up the place?
