Chapter 100
Chapter 100
The sky boiled with dark clouds, a roiling mass of fury mirroring the chaos on the ground. Lightning forked across the heavens, illuminating the ruins of the once-mighty fortress that now stood as a scar on the landscape. Smoke curled into the air from shattered stone and splintered trees, and the distant howl of wolves echoed like the cry of a broken world.
Skylar stood with blood on her hands—not all of it hers. Her breaths came in ragged gasps, her body trembling from both exertion and the crushing weight of what they had just survived. She could still taste the ash in her mouth, the scent of burned flesh and smoldering earth clawing at her senses.
But there was no time to rest. Not yet.
Beside her, Damon staggered to his feet, one arm cradled against his side where his ribs had been shattered. His eyes, glowing faintly gold in the gloom, met hers with grim understanding.
“They’re regrouping,” Skylar said, nodding toward the treeline. Shadows moved there—hunters or worse. “We need to fall back.”
Damon shook his head. “If we retreat now, they’ll box us in. We hold the ridge.”
She clenched her jaw. “We don’t have the numbers.”
“We have you,” he said, as if that was enough.
She didn’t have time to feel the weight of his faith.
A scream rang out—sharp and terrible—from the other side of the battlefield. It was Rhea.
Skylar turned, heart hammering, and sprinted through the wreckage toward the sound. The terrain was slick with rain and blood. She vaulted over a fallen tree and nearly tripped over a severed limb. Her eyes burned as she pushed herself faster.
Rhea was surrounded. Three enemy wolves, each larger than life, circled her like vultures. She had a deep gash running from her collarbone to her hip, but she was still fighting—fangs bared, claws flashing.
Skylar didn’t hesitate. She leapt.
The impact was brutal. She slammed into the nearest attacker, knocking him off his feet and sending both of them tumbling. Her claws found his throat before he could recover, and with a savage twist, she ended him.
The others turned. One lunged for her, jaws wide, but Rhea was faster. With a scream of fury, Rhea drove her claws through the wolf’s back. Blood sprayed like a crimson fan.
Only one remained.
This one was different. His eyes burned like embers, and the mark on his chest—an ancient symbol etched in flame—glowed brighter with every breath.
Skylar froze.
The branded wolf grinned, fangs gleaming. “You don’t know what you’re standing against.”
“I’ve fought worse,” she growled, but doubt wormed its way into her chest.
Rhea lunged at him—and was caught mid-air.
The branded wolf’s claws pierced straight through her torso. Skylar screamed.
“RHEA!”
Rhea’s body hit the ground like a broken doll, unmoving.
Skylar’s vision tunneled, the world narrowing to blood and rage. Her bones cracked, her scream warping into a bestial snarl as the wolf within her surged forward. Her power, wild and blinding, erupted around her in a storm of silver light.
The branded wolf took a step back.
Too late.
Skylar slammed into him with a force that cracked the earth. She didn’t hold back. Claw met claw, magic met fury. They fought like gods—tearing into each other with abandon. She saw the surprise in his eyes when she matched him strike for strike. Then she tore the mark from his chest with her teeth.
He howled—and vanished in a burst of flame and smoke.
The silence that followed was deafening.
Skylar collapsed beside Rhea, hands shaking. She pressed them against the bleeding wound, even though she knew it was useless. “No, no, stay with me…”
Rhea coughed, blood on her lips. “That… was stupidly brave.”
Skylar laughed through her tears. “Shut up and don’t die.”
But Rhea’s gaze was distant now. “Tell Damon… I kept my promise.”
Her hand fell limp.
Skylar sat frozen, the storm raging around her, until Damon arrived. He didn’t ask questions. He just knelt, took Rhea’s body in his arms, and let the silence hold them both.
When he finally spoke, his voice was low and hoarse. “This ends tonight.”
Skylar looked up, eyes glowing with silver fury. “Then let’s finish it.”
They gathered the survivors—wounded, weary, but unbroken. The enemy still lingered in the woods, waiting. The branded ones had scattered, but Skylar knew this was only the beginning of something worse.
As night fell, a strange quiet settled over the forest.
That’s when the ground trembled.
Damon stiffened. “Do you feel that?”
Skylar nodded slowly.
From the horizon came a sound like the earth being torn apart. Trees collapsed. Birds screamed into the air. A massive shape emerged—towering and misshapen. Not a wolf. Not human. Something in between. Something ancient.
Skylar stepped forward. “What the hell is that?”
“A nightmare,” Damon whispered.
The creature stopped at the ridge, and its eyes locked on Skylar.
And then it spoke.
“Daughter of flame… your blood has awakened me.”
Skylar’s heart stopped.
The creature stepped closer, every footfall shaking the world.
“You carry the last key.”
She didn’t understand—but somehow, she knew it was true.
Damon stepped in front of her, claws extended.
The creature didn’t even flinch.
“I will take it from your corpse,” it said.
Lightning struck behind them, painting the world in white fire.
Skylar met the creature’s gaze and whispered, “Come and try.”
Then the ground exploded.
