Chapter 99

The moon hung high above the treetops, casting an eerie glow over the clearing where the final confrontation was about to unfold. A chill slithered through the air, heavy with tension, as Skylar stepped into the circle of light. Her heart pounded like a war drum, echoing in her ears. She could feel the pull of destiny in her bones—it was time.

Damon was already there, his form half-shadow, half-wolf, a monstrous silhouette illuminated by flickering torchlight. His eyes locked onto hers, wild with rage, pain—and something deeper. Something broken. The beast inside him had clawed its way to the surface, and now, there was no turning back.

“You shouldn’t have come,” he growled, his voice laced with both warning and longing.

Skylar didn’t flinch. “You knew I would.”

Around them, the trees seemed to lean closer, holding their breath. The others—Ronan, Elara, the remaining loyalists—stood at the edge of the circle, unwilling to interfere. This battle was not theirs to fight.

“I didn’t want this,” Damon said, his voice shaking. “But you left me no choice.”

“You chose this path, Damon. You let the darkness in. But it’s not too late to fight it.”

His laugh was hollow, bitter. “I’m not the man you knew anymore.”

Skylar stepped forward, every inch of her trembling with power and resolve. “Then prove it. Show me there’s still a piece of you left.”

Damon’s expression shifted for a moment, eyes flickering with confusion and conflict. But then the shadows surged behind him, and the monstrous presence that had been haunting them emerged fully—Kaelith, the ancient spirit that had corrupted Damon’s bloodline. Its form was towering, more smoke and nightmare than flesh, eyes like molten voids.

“You dare defy me, girl?” Kaelith hissed, its voice scraping against her mind like razors. “He is mine.”

“Not anymore,” Skylar snapped, power crackling in her fingertips.

Kaelith surged forward, but Skylar was ready. Her magic flared, golden and radiant, slamming into the creature like a thunderclap. It shrieked, recoiling—but not for long. Damon lunged at her, caught between himself and the entity coiled within him. Their bodies collided, fangs and claws clashing with light and fury.

“I won’t fight you, Damon!” Skylar screamed, blocking a strike that nearly tore her shoulder open. “Please, come back to me!”

But Damon was lost in the haze of rage. His attacks were relentless, driven by Kaelith’s corruption. Skylar dodged and countered, trying to subdue rather than kill. Every blow was a plea. Every shield a prayer.

Suddenly, from the edge of the clearing, Mia’s voice rang out, high and clear. “Daddy!”

Time seemed to freeze.

Damon’s body jerked to a halt, trembling. His claws inches from Skylar’s throat. Slowly, he turned. Mia stood just beyond the tree line, flanked by her siblings. Tears streamed down her cheeks.

“Please come back, Daddy,” she whispered. “Please.”

Damon’s breath hitched. Skylar saw it—the crack. The fracture in the monster’s shell.

Kaelith screamed in fury, tendrils of darkness writhing around Damon, trying to hold him. But it was too late.

“No!” the spirit roared. “He is MINE!”

Skylar moved, her power rising to its peak. She reached into the bond between her and Damon, the one that had never truly broken, and poured everything into it—love, memory, light.

“Let. Him. Go!”

A burst of blinding light exploded from her hands, engulfing Damon and Kaelith in a whirlwind of energy. The clearing shook. Trees cracked and splintered. The others shielded their eyes as the darkness was ripped apart.

And then—silence.

When the light faded, Damon lay crumpled in the center of the circle, unmoving. Smoke drifted from his body, and the foul presence of Kaelith was gone.

Skylar dropped to her knees beside him. “Damon… please…”

His eyes fluttered open.

“I… I heard her,” he rasped.

Tears poured down Skylar’s face. “You came back.”

But before she could say another word, a low rumble echoed from the forest beyond. Ronan stepped forward, eyes narrowing.

“That wasn’t the last of them,” he said grimly. “We’ve got more coming.”

From the trees emerged figures—twisted hybrids of man and beast, corrupted by Kaelith’s remnants. They weren’t done.

Skylar rose to her feet, energy burning in her veins. Damon struggled to stand beside her.

“No more running,” he said, voice steadier. “We finish this. Together.”

And as the night erupted into chaos once more, they stood back-to-back, ready to fight whatever came next.

But high above, unseen by all, another pair of eyes watched—the true master behind Kaelith’s rise. And as the figure turned from the scene, a cruel smile curved their lips.

“The game has only just begun.”
