Chapter 166: Unsettled.

Chapter 166: Unsettled.
Ruelle’s POV

I am sure that by now, my feet must have dug its own 3D imprints into the wooden floors from how much pacing I have been doing. My fingernails are hooked into my teeth and that is simply because I have chewed out all my cuticles till there is nothing left.

I have no idea what I am waiting for. A relief? Some good news? Just… something. Something to put my mind at ease.

This is the first day of the brawl and I heard that Thorne is currently in battle. The little sleep I had last night upon getting the news that the brawl was to begin today does nothing to help my already spinning consciousness.

I feel as though I am loosing my mind.

There was nothing I could do today that would’ve successfully taken my mind off the fact that my husband was currently in an intense battle that would last for days.

No amount of fun itinerary could distract me.
And I highly doubt if I would allow any distraction without being certain that Thorne is okay.

The sound of heavy footsteps is what finally distracts me, pulling me out of my thoughts and causing adrenaline to rush through my veins. Morra materializes from the hallway, a hopeful look on her flushed face.

“The guard is here, my lady”. She tells me, breathless from running. Morra has been by my side all day, trying to get me to stop worrying. But at this point, I doubt I am capable of such, so she had brought up the idea to send one of the guards to find out what is going on at the brawl. Undercover.

I do not know how Thorne would take it if he finds out. I doubt he even wants to keep me informed about the brawl, at least till it is over.

“Where is he?”  I rush out as my feet scurry out of my room and towards the living room. Per Morra’s words, there is a guard waiting in the living room, his undercover clothes hung over his shoulder. He bows as soon as he sees me. “Tell me. How did it go?”

“It went well, my lady. Our Alpha is safe”. He says with a small smile. My hands fly up to my chest as I heave a deep breath, my body relaxing instantly. “Although…”

I snap my head towards the guard as he trails off, my joy immediately cut short and my brows pulling together in a confused frown. “Although… what? What happened?”

The guard parts his lips to speak, but my attention is yanked away immediately by the sharp pain spreading through my lower back and waist. I cry out, shutting my eyes as my hands fly to my waist. Morra is the first one by my side. She holds me as my feet give out beneath me.

“My lady! What’s wrong?”  She urges the other guard to pull me up as well. “Let’s take her to the couch. She needs to rest.”

My head is spinning., and so are my thoughts. There is a stinging pain in my head as though a hammer is smacked repeatedly against the walls of my brain. My entire body feels weak and it is difficult to move. My vision blurs in and out of focus as I try to regain myself. Laying on the couch now, I shut my eyes to rest but open them again once I hear Morra’s voice.

“Find a way to get the Old wolf.”  Morra tells the guard, but I latch unto his arm before he leaves.

“No. Stay. Tell me what happened at the brawl.”  He bows at my command and stays put. Morra sprints out from the living room and I assume she goes to tell another guard to get the Old wolf. I couldn’t be bothered. I just need to know what happened.

The guard lowers himself to his knees in front of the couch. I move to sit up but eventually give up after much difficulty. My body has completely shut down.

“My lady, the brawl… it didn’t go the way a brawl should.”  He starts. “The main battle didn’t last too long. Alpha Thorne had defeated the Meedrail Alpha fair and square and was about to kill him but then… but then a new set of warriors came in. Much larger in number and stronger than the Meedrail pack.”

I frown, trying and failing to sit up again. “A new set of warriors? Was it a trick?”

“I wouldn’t know, my lady. Initially, a brawl is supposed to begin with the two packs colliding from opposite sides. But this time, the Meedrail pack came from behind and there seemed to be traces of magic in their antics”

“Magic?”

“Although the new warriors took ours by surprise, we still won the brawl. Though the pack warriors suffered a great loss.”  He finishes.

And this is just the first day.

“This new set of warriors. Did they come along with the Meedrail pack or they came on their own?”

He looks away briefly, gathering his thoughts. He shakes his head softly. “I wouldn’t know, my lady. But from the looks of it, they were operating alone. Maybe sent by someone else. Because if they were simply reinforcements, then they would have retreated as soon as the Alpha of Meedrail was killed. But they remained, as though they were part of the brawl.”

My eyes stare into the distance as I try to process his words. I assume he is already gone, but then I hear his voice again. “My lady uhhh… but I did hear that they were sent by an Alpha from the North. One that has a bad beef with Alpha Thorne and wants him dead before the first quarter of the brawl is even over”

His words are vague, but at the same time so specific that they click to me instantly. My hand flies to my mouth in shock.
There is no other Alpha in the North that wants my husband dead as much as my father.

I am suddenly filled with so much rage, enough to cancel out the sadness and shock. My father allowed himself to become an archenemy to my husband just based of an old case of trespassing. My other palm fist at the material of my dress on my lap till my knuckles turn white.
I want to scream, but my voice is hitched in my throat and I am scared that if I open my mouth, I may not be able to control the words that fall out. I am filled with the urge to say everything and nothing at the same time. And to do everything in my power to remind my father why it is wrong to mess with my husband.

The sun is far gone from the sky now and I have no idea for how long it has been night. I have no recollection of having a meal today but there is still no appetite for one in my belly.

In this moment, all I want is to make my father pay for what he has done.
