146 Asking questions
When Kamara noticed Nate's body being placed next to her, she was still laying on the couch. They gave first aid right there in the living room. Nate's wounds were dressed with medicinal plants, but he didn't wake up. Kamara was cold, her little body tucked under the cover, her lips quivering.
"What made Enzo want to murder Nate?" Caiden began to think deeply. He asked the question to himself as no one else could have the answer.
Terrified, Kamara turned to face Caiden, and a million questions raced through her head.
"What will you do at this point?" Kamara asked, expecting the alpha to respond in a way that would satisfy her.
He turned to hurry, saying, "No one can know that Nate is alive until he recovers. Get everything ready; Nate will accompany you on your departure tonight."
Caiden's heart was racing in his chest as he left the room. He was secretly happy that Nate was still alive, but the question he'd posed moments earlier was still weighing heavily on his mind.
Night was coming; the sky outside was already beginning to take on shades of midnight blue. Bruno was waiting for Caiden at the police station, and when the deputy spotted him, he stood at attention.
"Is everything prepared for this evening's trip?" Making sure that no one would hear, Caiden whispered.
He said, "Yes, sir. When the time is agreed upon, the Full Moon pack leader will be there to take you to your destination."
"Great!" However, Caiden was hardly able to hide the main worry that was on his face. "You'll take Nate's place while he's away."
Bruno smiled broadly and his eyes brightened. It was what he had always wanted, at last.
The alpha underlined, "Of course, you will still be the deputy of the pack."
"Bruno, are you up for this mission?"
With sweat on his hands, he said, "Of course, Alpha." Bruno was jubilant. "We are going to begin looking for Nate tomorrow. We will definitely locate him soon."
Then he thought of Nate, lying on the balcony of the building, critically injured and unconscious, with no way for anyone to know he was still alive. Not quite yet.
"No!" Bruno was astonished by Caiden's orders. "Before locating Nate, there is a more crucial task to complete. I gave Enzo a full day to get out of my pack. I want you to arrest him if it doesn't happen."
Without understanding, he went on, "Yes, Alpha."
"And what about Louis? Bruno, tell me, has he woken up?" Caiden enquired.
"A couple of hours ago, sir," he answered. "but he hasn't said anything at all throughout. He won't communicate with anyone."
"Well, he won't say no to talking to me." The blood in Caiden's veins felt like it was boiling. "Bruno, I hope I can trust you."
Bruno was determined to be faithful to Caiden till the very last drop of sweat because the last thing he wanted right now was to let him down. He secretly hoped that Nate would never come back to reclaim his position.
"Sir, you can trust me," he stressed.
Taking one last look at him, Caiden turned to walk down the long hallway that led to the jail ward. It was cold and silent there. Louis believed it may be Kamara until he heard footsteps getting closer. Louis knew it would never be possible to see her again, even if it would make him happy than anything. Kamara was enraged by him.
This really was the end, he realized when he looked up and saw Caiden standing before him. Feeling frustrated, he bowed his head and bided his time till he was accused of something.
Caiden thought that he was lucky that only a grid stood between them.
"Bruno informed me that you haven't said anything since realizing you were vanquished when you awoke from sleep. You haven't said anything."
There was silence.
"When you were thinking about doing business with Enzo, what was in your mind?"
Caiden's tone was cold and disdainful; there was no confrontation in it.
After a long moment, he said, "I needed the money. I just never thought Kamara would be so endearing that I would fall in love with her."
Caiden's fists clenched. Louis was so bold as to keep up his provocations even after losing.
"And you kept lying to her even after you fell in love with her."
"At least I don't kill people like you do."
Caidsn moved forward on the grid, prepared to unlock the door, go inside, and put an end to Louis's life permanently.
"Louis, you will never see Kamara again," he added while gritting his teeth. "Your final memories of her will be ones of disappointment and contempt."
That's when he got up, scared, Caiden moved toward the grid, aware that Caiden might move in on him at any time.
His eyes became wild as he said, "What have you done to her?"
"I removed her from this place," he answered, "but I'm not supposed to explain anything to you."
Louis growled, "Kamara hates you and you will never have her."
Naturally, Louis's statement, "That is not the problem," burned a hole in Caiden's chest, but he was able to hold back his anguish and keep it hidden. "My goal is to ascertain the truth. How much of my children's kidnapping is Enzo engaged in?"
Louis bowed his head and moved back to take a quiet seat once more. He had no right to be loyal to Enzo. The only thing Enzo deserved in return for betraying him and allowing himself to be taken by Caiden was to be paid back with the same pain. However, Louis decided to remain silent.
"I'm not aware of anything," he muttered. "I just got hired to keep you away from Kamara."
"You're lying," Caiden remarked.
"Caiden, you've reached your own conclusions. So why do you ask me this?" He looked up at him and said. "All I can say is that you ought to give your wife more attention. You don't realize how much Jessie is hiding."
A panic burst within him. For several minutes, Caiden observed Louis, attempting to comprehend his remarks. Caiden's suspicions all pointed to Jessie, even though he didn't want to think that she could be engaged in anything. He was unable to carry on the conversation after that. Silently leaving the police station, he considered all he had heard and learned during the whole day.
