Chapter 15 Homecoming
Chapter 15 Homecoming
The sky was bleeding.
That was my first thought as we topped the hill overlooking Silvermane territory. The air above my pack lands was literally dripping red, and through the crimson drops, I could see tears in reality itself - black rifts that showed views of nightmare worlds beyond.
"Oh god," Luna whispered from the driver's seat. "What has she done?"
Through the biggest rift, shadow creatures were pouring out like a waterfall of darkness. They swarmed over the pack buildings, but they weren't destroying them. They were... changing them. The familiar log houses and stone halls were twisting into impossible shapes that hurt to look at.
"The pack house," I said, my voice cracking. "She's turned it into some kind of portal."
Through our soul-bond, I felt Marcus's fear mixing with my own. But I also felt something else - his drive. His total refusal to let evil win.
"We can still save them," he said firmly. "I can feel the pack members. They're alive."
"But changed," Luna added grimly. Through her Reality Shifter powers, she was seeing things we couldn't. "Seraphina has been feeding them Ancient blood for days. They're becoming something between werewolf and devil."
"Can you change them back?" I asked desperately.
"I don't know," Luna revealed. "I've never tried to reverse transformation magic on this scale."
That's when Aria spoke up from her car seat. "Daddy, we have bigger problems."
"What do you mean, sweetheart?"
She pointed at the rifts in the sky. "Those aren't just doors to other places. They're doors to other times."
"Other times?" Marcus asked.
"Past, present, future - they're all mixing together," Aria explained in her too-adult voice. "Pretty soon, every version of every person who ever lived here will exist at the same time."
I felt my blood turn to ice. "You mean..."
"I mean you're about to meet every Alpha who ever ruled this territory," she confirmed. "Including the ones who were really, really bad."
Through the windshield, I could already see shapes moving through the area that didn't belong to our time. Warriors in ancient gear. Werewolves with scars from fights fought centuries ago. And leading them all...
"That's Alpha Fenris Silvermane," I breathed. "My great-great-grandfather. The one who nearly destroyed the pack with his violence."
"And there's Alpha Marcus the Bloody," Marcus pointed out. "My ancestor. The one who used to kill pack members for fun."
"Why would Seraphina bring back the worst Alphas in our family history?" Luna asked.
"Because," the impossible baby said from his car seat, "she needs their darkness to finish the Soul Harvesting. The more evil and pain she can gather in one place, the stronger the process becomes."
"So she's not just stealing our power," I realized. "She's creating a supernatural disaster to amplify it."
"Exactly," Elder Moonwhisper said grimly. "And once she harvests a Tri-Soul bond with this much dark energy attached, she'll be powerful enough to open permanent rifts between all realities."
"What does that mean?" Luna asked.
"It means the end of everything," the Elder responded. "Every nightmare, every monster, every evil that was ever locked away or defeated will be free to roam every world that exists."
We sat in the truck at the edge of my territory, watching generations of family evil parade around the place I'd once called home. Through our soul-bond, I felt Marcus and Luna's resolve mixing with my own despair.
"We can't fight all of them," I said quietly.
"We don't have to," Luna answered. "We just have to reach Seraphina and stop the ritual."
"She's in the pack house," I said, pointing at the bent building that had once been my home. "But look at it. It's ringed by shadow creatures, Ancient vampires, and every evil Alpha who ever lived."
"Then we go through them," Marcus said simply.
"Marcus—"
"No, Damon," he interrupted. "I'm tired of running. I'm tired of being afraid. Those are our people down there being turned into monsters. This is our home being destroyed. And that woman is using our family's dark past to hurt innocent people."
Through our bond, I felt his total resolve. This gentle man who'd spent his life mending others was ready to fight an army of supernatural horrors.
"Marcus is right," Luna said, starting the truck again. "Whatever happens, happens together." As we drove down the hill toward the chaos, I activated my Alpha voice through the soul-bond, sending it to every pack member still alive in the area.
"This is Alpha Damon Silvermane," I announce. "If you can still hear me, if you're still trying, hold on. Help is coming."
The answer I got back nearly broke my heart.
Jake's voice, warped but recognizable: "Damon? Thank god. But hurry. She's got us all in cages, and she's... she's making us watch what she's doing to the children."
"What children?" I asked.
"The pack youngsters," Jake's voice cracked. "She's using them to hold the time rifts. Every time one of them cries, another piece of history breaks loose."
Through our bond, I felt Luna's maternal rage explode like nuclear energy. Her Reality Shifter power flared so bright it made the dashboard glow.
"No one hurts children," she said in a voice that could have frozen hell. "No one."
"Luna," Marcus warned, "your power is destabilizing—"
"Good," she snapped. "Let it collapse. Let it tear apart every evil thing in this area."
But as her power grew, something unexpected happened. The old evil Alphas in the territory suddenly stopped their rampage and turned toward us.
"They can sense the Reality Shifter energy," Elder Moonwhisper warned. "Luna, you need to control—"
Too late. Luna's power burst outward in a wave of pure maternal rage. But instead of killing the evil Alphas, it did something worse.
It freed them from Seraphina's power.
Now, instead of being mindless puppets in her rite, they were fully aware, fully evil, and completely focused on us.
"Oh no," I whispered.
Alpha Fenris raised his head and howled - a sound of pure malice that made the shadow things scatter. Through the magical chaos, his voice carried clearly.
"So," he said, grinning with too many teeth, "my weak relative has finally come home. And he brought me the most interesting gift."
"What gift?" Marcus asked, though I could tell he didn't want to know.
Fenris's old eyes fixed on Luna. "A Reality Shifter who just showed she can free us from anyone's control. Including the natural laws that kept us dead."
That's when I understood the true horror of what had just happened.
"Luna," I said quietly, "I think you just made us immortal enemies instead of temporary puppets."
"So?" she asked, still radiating protective anger.
"So now they can follow us into any reality, any time, any world we try to escape to," I explained. "We didn't just free them from Seraphina. We freed them from everything that was keeping them contained."
Through our soul-bond, I felt the exact moment when Luna realized what she'd done.
The old evil Alphas were no longer bound by death, time, or dimensional barriers. They were forever loose in the multiverse, and they had Luna to thank for it.
And they were very interested in showing their gratitude directly.
"Damon," Marcus said quietly, "why are they all smiling like that?"
That's when Alpha Fenris spoke again, his voice carrying across the chaos-torn land.
"Because, descendant, your Reality Shifter mate just gave us exactly what we needed to become the rulers of every world that exists." He laughed, a sound like breaking bones. "And the first world we're going to conquer is yours."
The ancient Alphas began to change, their forms getting larger and more monstrous as Luna's power continued to ripple through them.
"But first," Alpha Marcus the Bloody called out happily, "we're going to play with your children. They smell so wonderfully innocent."
That's when Aria looked up at me with those knowing eyes.
"Daddy," she said sadly, "I think Mommy just accidentally started the war that ends everything."
