Chapter 16 The First Battle

Chapter 16 The First Battle
"JAKE!"
I screamed as I watched my friend charge at us with black veins moving up his neck and shadow-fire burning in his eyes. Whatever Seraphina had done to him, he wasn't human anymore.
"Luna, get back!" Damon yelled, but I couldn't move. This was Jake - the man who'd helped me learn pack standards when I was just a scared file clerk. He'd given me his jacket when I was cold during long talks.
And now he was trying to kill me.
"Jake, please," I begged as he raised claws that dripped with dark magic. "It's me. It's Luna."
For just a second, something flickered in his shadow-burned eyes. Something that remembered friendship.
Then the darkness took over again, and he lunged.
But instead of running or fighting, I did something crazy. I reached out and grabbed his clawed hand with my bare fingers.
The moment our skin touched, everything changed.
Pain burst through my body - not my own pain, but Jake's. Through my empathic powers, I felt everything Seraphina had done to him. Days of pain, forced transformation, his human soul being slowly eaten by shadow magic.
"Oh god, Jake," I whispered, tears running down my face. "What did she do to you?"
But something else was happening. Where my hands touched his claws, warm golden light was spreading. Not healing magic like Marcus used - this was different. This was pure empathy made visible, and it was burning away the shadow sickness.
"Impossible," gasped Beta Sarah, who was attacking Marcus nearby. Like Jake, she was changed, but she stopped mid-swing to stare at us.
The golden light spread up Jake's arm, and where it touched, the black veins vanished. His shadow-fire eyes flickered back to their normal brown.
"Luna?" he whispered, sounding confused and scared. "What's happening to me?"
"You're coming back," I said, pouring more sympathetic energy into him. It was exhausting - like trying to hold back an ocean with my bare hands - but it was working.
"How is she doing that?" Alpha Fenris growled from across the battlefield. The ancient evil Alpha looked angry that his new shadow-soldiers weren't working properly.
"She's not just healing the infection," Elder Moonwhisper called out in wonder. "She's healing their souls!"
That's when I understood. My empathic skills weren't just about feeling other people's emotions anymore. They were about recovering what made someone human in the first place.
"Marcus!" I shouted. "The soul-bond! Channel your healing power through me!"
"I don't understand—"
"Trust me!"
Through our Tri-Soul connection, Marcus sent his healing energy to me, and I mixed it with my empathy, making something that had never existed before - emotional healing that could actually reverse supernatural corruption.
I reached for Sarah next, grabbing her shadow-clawed hand just as she was about to strike Damon.
"Sarah, remember," I said, pushing my power into her. "Remember showing me how to file incident reports. Remember laughing when I put everything in the wrong folder." The bright light spread through her too, burning away the darkness. But this time, something unexpected happened. As Sarah's humanity returned, she gasped and pointed at the old Alphas.
"They're not the real threat," she said quickly. "Luna, Seraphina isn't controlling the shadow magic anymore."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean when you freed the evil Alphas from her control, they took over the shadow creatures too." Sarah's eyes were wide with fear. "They're not trying to gather your power anymore. They're trying to eat your truth."
"Eat our what?"
"The ancient Alphas aren't just evil werewolves," Jake explained, his memory returning as the shadow infection left him. "They're reality pests. They eat entire worlds and move on to the next one."
My heart stopped. "You mean they're not trying to rule our world?"
"They're trying to devour it completely," Sarah confirmed. "Every person, every memory, every opportunity. And then they'll move on to the next world and do it again."
Through our soul-bond, I felt Damon and Marcus's fear mixing with my own. We hadn't just freed dangerous enemies - we'd unleashed something that wanted to consume life itself.
"How do we stop them?" Damon asked desperately.
That's when Aria tugged on my sleeve. "Mommy, we can't stop them."
"What do you mean, sweetheart?"
"I mean they're too strong now," she explained sadly. "When you freed them, you gave them access to your Reality Shifter power. They're using it to make themselves stronger every second."
"So what do we do?"
Aria looked up at me with those old eyes. "We have to make them not want to eat our world anymore."
"How?"
"By showing them something they want more."
Before I could ask what that meant, the impossible baby spoke up from where Marcus was carrying him.
"We show them the one thing reality parasites can never resist," he said happily. "A world where they already won."
"That doesn't make sense," I argued.
"It does if you think about it," the baby answered. "Reality bugs don't just eat worlds for food. They eat them because they're looking for the perfect reality - the one where they get everything they ever wanted."
"So?"
"So you create that reality for them," Aria said simply. "You make a fake world where they think they've already won everything. They'll leave this reality to go live in their perfect paradise."
"But that's lying," I said.
"It's survival," Damon corrected grimly. "If we don't trick them somehow, they'll consume every person we've ever loved."
I looked around at the chaos-torn land. More pack members were fighting their way back to humanity as my empathic healing spread, but the old Alphas were getting stronger every minute.
"Can I really create a fake reality?" I asked.
"You're a Reality Shifter," Elder Moonwhisper said. "You can create any reality you can imagine."
"But there's a catch," the impossible baby added.
"What catch?"
"Creating a fake reality that convincing takes enormous power," he explained. "You'd have to put almost all of yourself into it."
"What does that mean?"
"It means you might not survive the process," Marcus said quietly, understanding what the baby was saying.
Through our soul-bond, I felt Damon and Marcus's urgent fear. They'd just found me again, and now I might have to offer myself to save everyone.
"There has to be another way," Damon said furiously.
"There is," Aria said quietly. "But you're not going to like it."
"What is it?"
"The ancient Alphas are reality parasites because they were made that way," she stated. "Someone turned them into monsters a long time ago."
"So?"
"So if we can find the person who made them and get them to reverse the transformation..."
"They'd go back to being regular dead people," I ended. "But who could have that kind of power?"
That's when Elder Moonwhisper went very, very pale.
"Oh no," she whispered.
"What is it?" Marcus asked.
"I know who turned the ancient Alphas into reality parasites," she said, her voice shaking. "It was the same person who taught Seraphina the Soul Harvesting ritual."
"Who?"
Elder Moonwhisper looked straight at me, and I saw absolute terror in her ancient eyes.
"Your grandmother, Luna. The one who died when you were five. She's not dead - she's been hiding in the spaces between worlds, and she's the most powerful Reality Shifter who ever lived."
My world turned. "My grandmother is alive?"
"Alive and very, very angry that you've been using powers she thinks belong to her," the Elder confirmed. "Luna, your grandma didn't just teach Seraphina dark magic. She's been planning this for twenty years."
"Planning what?"
"To steal your Reality Shifter abilities and use them to remake every world in existence according to her vision."
That's when a voice I remembered from childhood songs spoke from the shadows.
"Hello, dear Luna," my grandma said sweetly as she stepped out of a rift in space. "I've been waiting so long to see you again."
But the woman who emerged wasn't the loving grandma from my memories. Her eyes burned with the same reality-consuming hunger as the old Alphas.
"Grandma?" I whispered.
"Oh, child," she said, reaching out with hands that sparked with dark energy. "You have no idea how proud I am of the power you've gained. It's going to be so useful when I tear your soul apart and take it for myself."
