Chapter 55 CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVE
CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVE
GWEN’S POV
I hated this room.
The room was too small, the window so tiny it barely allowed any ray of sunlight inside, and the mattress was so thin I could feel the bunk when I lay down. A servant’s room.
That's where I live.
The woman who was supposed to be Luna of the Moonshadow Pack.
I stared at the ceiling, turning slightly on the bed trying to look for a comfortable position, I hate the squeaky sound it makes.
Everything had been perfect before Zaria ruined it.
The wedding preparations.
The attention.
The way everyone had already started treating me like the future Luna.
Even my mother has decided not to reach out to me until I become Luna.
The servants that does all my chores for me now avoid me like a plaque not out of respect though, it's out of pity
A sharp knock sounded on my door interrupting my thoughts.
I frowned.
“Who is it?”
“It’s me,” a familiar voice answered softly.
Elara.
Of course it was her. She is the head of the maids, what exactly does she want?
“Come in,” I said.
She walked in slowly, her footsteps barely sounding on the floor.
“Hi Gwen” she said
Good day madam Elara, I hope there is nothing wrong, how can I be of service to you.” I said.
She kept her gaze on me as if trying to study me, as if there was more to me.
Then slowly she lifted her gaze to look around my small room.
Her gaze lingered on the cracked wooden table, the worn carpet, and the narrow bed.
“This room doesn’t suit you,” she said quietly.
I stood upright crossing my arms.
“It suits me perfectly.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Does it?”
Madam Elara barely associates with the maids, it's only if she wants to run an errand she talks to us, besides she hates me and thinks that I am only here to make Zaria pay for what she did to me.
, but for her to come see me in my room then there must be something interesting going on.
Everyone in this palace trusts and listens to her because she's the oldest staff member but me I don't believe that facade.
“Yes.”
My response sounded annoyed.
She knew about the broken marriage between Me and the Alpha and how Zaria became Luna.
She's up to something, I hope it doesn't spoil my chances of becoming Luna.
It's either she's here to rub it in or …
“You were supposed to live in the Luna’s chambers,” she said, cutting my thoughts short.
I felt something painful twist inside my chest, I have never felt this kind of reaction to my loss until she said it out.
“That’s not your concern.”
“You were supposed to rule beside Alpha Max.” she said.
“Stop.” I mumbled.
“You were supposed to—”
“I SAID STOP!” I yelled, feeling another sharp pain in my chest.
Silencing her before it causes more damage. My voice echoed through the small room.
Elara watched me carefully studying my reaction after a moment she smiled softly as if she got the reaction she had hoped for.
“My apologies.” she said
I turned away from her trying to calm my breathing.
“I didn’t come here to test your emotions.” She said.
“Then why are you here?” I asked, looking out the window.
Then she spoke the words slowly.
“ I came with a proposal for you.”
I laughed bitterly. Looking at her from head to toe she was a maid like me wearing the same uniform as me just different colors.
“There’s nothing a maid like you could offer me that would help me.” I huffed.
“I wouldn't be here if I didn't know it would benefit you.” she said, with a smile across her wrinkled face.
I gave it a thought, what if she really does have something she's the closest to Luna and the only maid the Alpha trusts.
“Okay, what is it you want to give me?” I shrugged.
“ I'm here to give you a chance.” She replied to my question, without wiping the smile on her face.
The word made my stomach tighten.
I stared at her suspiciously, I have always felt like she was up to no good, this just confirmed my suspicion.
“Explain yourself.” I sat at the edge of my bed, and waited for her explanation.
Elara walked toward the window and looked outside.
“Tell me something, Gwen,” she said quietly. “Do you still want to become Luna?”
The question hung heavily in the air.
For a moment, I didn’t answer. Because it was painfully obvious.
“That dream is over.” I mumbled.
That was a life I had always dreamed of, the respect, power, the throne, they were all my dreams until Zaria took everything from me
But wanting something and having it are two very different things.
“ what if i tell you you can still have that dream.” she said.
I frowned, “How?”
“Elara, Max married Zaria. They’re bound by pack law.” I continued.
Elara turned toward me.
“That can change.” she huffed.
I scoffed.
“Not unless one of them dies.” I laughed while saying it.
She didn’t laugh.
Instead, she studied my face carefully.
“Or there is someone strong enough to replace the Alpha.” She said,
The words made me scared. This was treason.
“What?”
Elara lowered her voice.
“There are people who believe Max shouldn’t be Alpha.” she chuckled, like it was funny.
I stared at her. “ Which people?”
“People who want the throne for themselves, the rightful owner of the throne.” she continued, ignoring my previous question.
My stomach felt uneasy. This conversation was becoming dangerous.
“No.” I said forcefully.
Elara blinked. “No?”
“I cannot listen to this. I think you should leave.”
I moved toward the door.
But Elara didn’t move.
“ I'm not done talking.” She said.
She's crazy if she thinks I would still want to listen to her, treason is punishable by death, I want to become Luna not die.
“You haven’t even heard the most important part.” she continued.
I turned towards her closing the door slowly.
“ If someone else wants the throne, how does it affect becoming the Luna and how does this affect me?” I asked
“When Ethan becomes Alpha… you will be Luna.” she said.
I struggled in my mind to remember who Ethan is…Zaria’s best friend?
This was too much to process, if I joined her team and anything goes wrong I could say she blackmailed me.. no, no, no I need time to process this.
I walked to the door and opened it
“You need to leave, now.” I said.
“You should think about it. Things are about to change around here.” she said.
“I don't care.” I said
She looked at me like she knew something I didn't, she walked out slowly just as she came inside, I slammed the door behind her.
The room was silent again. Left to my thoughts, I sat down slowly on the bed replaying her words in my head.
“ I cannot get involved in this madness.” I said to myself.
But deep down I knew a dangerous thought had planted itself.
