Chapter 54 CHAPTER FIFTY-FOUR

Chapter 54 CHAPTER FIFTY-FOUR
CHAPTER FIFTY-FOUR

ELARA’S POV

The palace had never been this tense before

Servants whispered and cowered in dark corners, guards passed through the corridors with tense postures, and everyone was afraid of what might happen next.

The king has been quiet since Raymond's death.

Everyone is wondering who the culprit might be, everyone except me.

I walked slowly through the quiet hallway leading to the Luna's chambers, my hands clasped calmly behind my back as if nothing had changed. On the outside, I looked calm but inside I knew a storm was growing.

Everything was going exactly as planned but something still felt wrong. I think the Luna heard me talking in my room, but I don't know how much she heard.

I entered the Luna's chambers quietly, closing the door behind me. The Luna lay awake on the bed, her back against the bedhead.

The moment she noticed me her expression changed to something I couldn't describe, and she gave me a hard stare.

“Elara, was there anyone in your room with you yesterday?” Zaria asked

I hesitated a little to respond. I don't think she's sure of what she heard. If I can distract her a little I think she would let it go.

“ No your grace I'm sure you misheard, I was going to my room from the kitchen when I heard you shouting help and by the time I got there the Alpha was with you” I said.

The Luna kept on looking at me, I hope she buys my lie.

“ I thought I heard you, my brain is being a little bit fuzzy, forget about it, I must have heard wrong” she said.

She kept on her guarded expression but more subtle now.

“Is there anything I can get you your majesty” I said

“ Water and a bowl of fruit would do for now” she said

I bowed my head and left the room.

Once I closed the door I sighed in relief, I may be clear for now but I'm sure she still has doubts.

Entering the kitchen I ordered one of the maids to take fruit and water to the Luna's chambers then I walked back to my quarters.

I entered my small room and closed the door behind me carefully.

I leaned against the wooden door and exhaled slowly.

Now that I was sure of what Luna Zaria thinks I now need to work on the king.

I know that if she tells Max what she heard he won't believe her, he trusts me too much to believe the Luna.

But now that he knows it was tafana poisoning that killed Raymond he would want to dig into it and I can't allow that.

“Raymond… Raymond…” I murmured under my breath.

He wasn't careful enough if only he had just kept his part of the bargain, his death would not have been necessary.

Ethan has warned me about him, that he was a weak link.

“She isn't who she seems to be.”

I had overheard the guard repeating Raymond’s last words earlier.

Was he talking about me?

Or was he talking about someone else?

It didn’t matter anymore.

The dead tell no stories.

But still, the situation is more dangerous now.

Alpha Max is not a foolish Alpha like his father had been in his final years. The moment he starts investigating he will definitely discover the truth.

And if he did he would find out Raymond sold the tafana poison for someone, and if he finds out it's me I'll be in trouble.

My eyes slowly drifted toward the small wooden box under my bed.

Inside that box were letters. Letters from Ethan that could destroy everything.

We can't meet often to avoid any suspicion so we resorted to writing letters.

He gives them to me sneakily anything he visits Luna Zaria, we are lucky they are best friends it has given Ethan an edge over being a suspect.

Ethan had grown into a brilliant man. The real Alpha blood ran through him, that's why we must succeed so he can help me take my revenge.

After all my years of loyalty, I still lost my daughter, I must get my revenge when the time is right.

But what if we failed, if Alpha Max discovered us before we succeeded, I would lose everything and not get my revenge.

As I sat on my bed looking at our letters a knock sounded on my door quickly I put everything back in the box and under my bed

“Come in” I said

A maid entered bowing her head in greeting

“The Alpha has sent for you” she said

The Alpha mostly sends for me when he needs me to check on the Luna or ask my opinion on matters, I just hope it's one of the latter.

“You may go, I'll be right behind you,” I said to the maid.

On entering the throne room, the Alpha sat on his throne.

“Greetings your grace,” I said

“Madam Elara, how are you doing? I know things are a little bit tense around now, I hope the servants are not making it difficult?” The Alpha asked.

“ No your grace, it's quite better as everyone is on their toes not wanting to offend anyone.”

The Alpha nodded in understanding.

“I need you to check up on the Luna more often as it seems she may be unwell, I know she's always in safe hands with you.” The Alpha said.

“Yes, your grace.” I bowed my head and left the throne room.

The Alpha has placed me in a position where I need to see the Luna more often, which may expose me to too much scrutiny from the Luma.

I need to reduce my interactions with the Luna, so that I won't be on her radar.

I need a pawn in this game, someone I can earn the Luna's trust, someone willing to do anything to become Luna.

The person has to be weak, easy to blackmail, and desperate.

Walking down the corridor I smiled to myself

I know just the right person.

Turning left I knocked on the door, and a voice responded from behind the door.

Pushing the door open I entered.

“Good day, Gwen.” I smiled, mischievously.
