Chapter 53 CHAPTER FIFTY-THREE
CHAPTER FIFTY-THREE
MAX’S POV
I stared at Raymond’s decomposing body, with a huge feeling of guilt in my chest, the last words he said to me kept ringing in my head, even when I tried to shake it off.
“She isn't who she seems to be” He kept whispering to me when they took me to the dungeon.
I thought he was talking that way so I could feel pity for him. I hated myself for not giving my best friend a chance to prove his innocence, regardless of how he had served me diligently.
“Agghh” I groaned, throwing a fist to the wall, making my knuckles bleed.
I tried to push back the tears welling in my eyes. An Alpha can't be seen that weak.
Just then I felt a hand on my back, caressing me softly, I knew it wasn't Zaria and the feeling of another woman on me was disgusting.
“His death might be for a good reason” Gwen whispered into my ear.
“You need to be with the Luna” I said dryly, pushing her off me.
“She is fine, the healer said She is getting better,” She smiled. “I just wanted to know how you are doing”
“I'm fine” I retorted, turning to my guard who had just arrived.
“The healer says he died of poison, Tafana poison to be precise” The guard said in my whisper.
Tafana poison has been found since my father’s reign as Alpha. Was it buried because of its deadly nature? How the hell did someone get in touch with it?
“Who was the last person who brought him food?” I asked, turning to the guard.
“Madam Elara, she is the only person who visits her” he shrugged.
The bastard must have broken into the dungeon then, the murderer is a smart one and I hate it.
“Send words to Raymond's family and announce his death, tell them he is a free man and can be buried" I said to the guard, as that would be the least I could do for Raymond.
I turned to leave and Gwen was still standing there, waiting for my attention.
“Gwen I have more trivial matters to attend to, the palace is under attack” I scolded. “I need my space.”
“What about me?” She cried.
I ignored her and walked off, I need to avenge the death of my best friend but I am clueless on where to start.
I went to Zaria’s room, to pay her a quick visit
I pushed the door open and saw her staring at me, with widened eyes.
“You are awake” I exclaimed, running to sit by her side. “Thank goodness, I was so scared”
“If I knew Luna would be a threat to my life, I would have fled the pack when you mistakenly proposed” She rolled her eyes, and turned her gaze away from me and towards the window.
Zaria had been through hell since she became Luna and I hate myself for it, everything has been complicated since she came into my life.
“I am sorry, when I get this person I would…”
“I don't care what you do to the person, I just want my mother free!” She interrupted me.
I can't bring myself to set Zaria’s mother, she killed ng sister and I'm certain she knows where these attacks have been coming from, I want her to get her memory back, tell me what she knows before punishing her for the crime she committed, which is murder.
“Your mother is a murderer!” I scorned af her, trying not to yell.
“She isn't, there has to be a misunderstanding!” She cried, sinking into the bed.
There was no misunderstanding, I saw Zaria’s mother crush my sister with her carriage, internationally.
“You need to get well” I said coldly, giving her a peck on her forehead. Thus was the only way to prevent us from fighting.
“I would be leaving, I need to make sure Raymond has a befitting burial, the court members would be here anytime soon” I stood to my feet and headed towards the door.
“How well do you know Elara?” Zaria asked, as I was midway towards the door.
I turned to look at her, the words she said about Elara the previous day kept flashing back, she kept calling Elara evil.
“ Elara is a loyal servant of the palace, if there is something you have that's negative about her, then I think you are mistaking" I said coldly.
Elara is like a mother to me, and I would stand still while she is being accused of treacherous crimes.
“Do you think I would lie against Elara?” Zaria scoffed. “I overheard her…”
“ENOUGH!” I growled, unable to hold my anger any longer. “Elara would never hurt someone, you all all people should know that!”
With that, I strolled out of my chambers, the thought of Elara was overshadowing other thoughts in my head. I thought of reasons for her to be a suspect but there were none.
Elara served my father, even on the day her daughter was murdered, she is too good to be in bed.
I got outside the palace to meet with the board members and saw Raymond's wife on the floor in tears, her eyes were swollen and red, with ruined makeup on her face, despite the horrible features, she still looked good.
“You killed him!” she growled, allowing the tears to flow down her cheeks freely. He was fucking innocent and didn't deserve to die, like this especially.
I gulped hard, not breaking eye contact. She had reminded me that I was the cause of the death of my best friend even when I tried to push the thought away.
“He would get vengeance, that I swear by the moon goddess” I appealed to her.
“It's too late for vengeance, she has gotten what she wants” She said, still in tears.
“I don't understand,” I said, with confusion laced in my voice.
She walked towards me slowly, when she got to where I was, she tiptoed and whispered into my ear.
“Your days as Alpha are numbered”
What the hell did she mean by that, I can hardly tell if he is making a threat or warning.
The fear of losing my ancestors' inheritance to another person makes my heart skip.
