Chapter 29: Frame up
Chapter 29: Frame up
"What exactly is she capable of?" Damon asked Jonathan.
Now that he knew Laila was not a threat to the entire werewolves community like Dearkson had made everyone believe, he needed to understand the extent of her strength.
"She is capable of so many things my dear Alpha. Many of which she might never learn how to use for the masters in them are long gone. Laila is a queen, her powers and abilities are endless." Jonathan explained.
Damon was quiet. This last piece of information was like a double-edged sword. It meant Laila was like a ticking time bomb. In the wrong hands, things could turn deadly. He would have to get her away from Adam Myers to avoid him using her to cause havoc to others. Adam was dangerous and couldn't be allowed to stay with Laila. The fact that the council sent Adam after she was even more disturbing.
"Jonathan, do you know why Dearkson sent Adam Myers after Laila, even after he had already sent me?" Damon thought aloud.
Could it be that Dearkson wanted Adam to train Laila so he could use her powers for selfish reasons? Clarkson was capable of anything. The bastard wanted power by all means necessary.
"No, my dear alpha, as much as Dearkson will love to keep Laila to himself, he is also scared. He wants her dead. That's why he sent Adam Myers despite his strange behavior to get her. He knew Adam will want to kill her. You, on the other hand, will only want justice the true way. That's why he got Adams. Your job is to apprehend her, his job is to kill her," Jonathan said, his sharp eyes roaming through the window, checking for more spies.
"But I don't think, Adam wants to kill her," Damon muttered and Jonathan gazed at him with amusement dancing in his sharp eyes.
"Adam Myers is a strange boy but he knows what he is doing," Jonathan said staring into the distance.
Damon knew the old man was hiding something but he didn't want to force him into saying it. Adam had a motive and he had to find out about it. If Jonathan wasn't going to tell him, he would just have to dig around the city for anyone who knew Adam Myers well enough.
Jonathan suddenly sprung up to his feet, "you should leave my boy, Dearkson will soon return with more trouble. I can feel it," he said, ushering Damon to the hole in the wall he used as an entrance.
"But Jonathan, why not come with me, I can protect you!" Damon said finally getting a brilliant idea. "You don't have to wait out here for them to keep coming at you, I can protect you," Damon insisted but Jonathan only gazed at him as if he was speaking gibberish.
"Jonathan listens, you are surely going to tire out. You can't keep fighting all of them! How long can you keep up!" Damon cried out. "Let me help you!"
"Listen, my dear boy, not every one of us was destined to see the dawn of the new era. This is my fight and it ends here," he said pushing Damon out of the house with the strength Damon didn't expect.
Damon fell on his rump. "Jonathan! Don't do this! I am not leaving here without you!"
Damon was determined to save Jonathan. He was a good man and Damon believed everyone deserved to be saved, no matter what. He got to his feet and dragged the bolder away from the hole. He proceeded inside and heard the swooshing sound of an arrow, he took over at the last minute and the arrow hit the wall beside him.
"You are going to get yourself killed boy!" Jonathan hissed. "I thought you left!"
Damon scurried towards him bending his back. Jonathan was behind the turned table holding a quiver. "What's going on?" Damon yelled. "What was that about?" The man had just tried to kill him for the second time in a row.
"Reduce your voice, they are listening!" Jonathan mouthed, pointing to the shadows behind the wall. Damon looked to the walls and back to the old man in front of him. He turned again, yet he couldn't see anything.
"Jonathan there is-" His words got stuck in his mouth as a large arrow flew past him missing him by just a few inches.
"I told you to leave. Now they know you are here, stay down!" Jonathan snapped, aiming his quiver at the wall ahead, narrowing his eyes, he released the arrow and there was a shrill sound in the air, followed by a dying howl.
Damon was gobsmacked. "Are those spirit wolves?" He asked not believing his ears.
"Yes, they are, and they won't stop till I am dead," Jonathan confirmed.
Spirit wolves were the most dangerous assassins Dearkson utilized to gain power amongst the people. Anyone who stood against him got murdered by mysterious wolves whom the people named Spirit wolves. Damon never imagined them to be real! They were spirits. He checked the wall again but could only make out the waving shadows never a true man.
"They are real? I thought they were made-up stories!" Damon whispered still shocked by the presence of the spirits around him. His wolf was alert, ready to pounce at any moment. His ears were pointing out waiting for the spirits to get close.
"They are real and they are weapons of Dearkson!" Jonathan spat preparing a new arrow.
"Dearkson..." Damon trailed. "So, it is true! How are you seeing them? I can't see a thing!" Damon stated.
"It is an art my boy, you train for it. In our days, I was a specialist in spirit combat. I fought hundreds of these creatures!"
These days, nobody spent time learning how to fight spirit wolves. Nobody even believed in it anymore, and he was sure there was no tutor around except if Jonathan was willing to teach him a thing or two.
"How do I fight them?" Damon asked, determined to help Jonathan.
Jonathan released a low laugh. "You can't fight them."
Damon frowned as he stared at the old man. "But Jonathan I am trying to help. How can I help you? " Damon cried out, refusing to give up on the old man.
"I am not fighting them I am only gaining more time for myself and more spirits. When I kill one, two more rise from the cries of the dying one." Jonathan said in a sing-song manner.
Damon wanted to ask another question when Jonathan spoke out again.
"Only the true queen can defeat these creatures. Once she does, Dearkson will be powerless. This is why he wants to stop Laila by all means, " Jonathan breathed releasing another arrow into the shadows. Another dying howl filled the air and Damon swore he heard something drop, yet couldn't see a thing.
"Come with me!" Jonathan said, leading Damon to a corridor deeper into his house. "They have seen you now, they will go after you. We have to take you out of here!" He started running with a speed Damon didn't think he could muster.
"Why can't we use that hole you created in your wall, my car is just right outside! We will be out of here in no time!" Damon yelled behind him.
"You don't understand. If you leave through that opening, they will track you down. We need to make them believe we died in here... "
Damon held his tongue and followed the old man through the corridor. They were moving so fast, Damon couldn't recognize the place, it was like a bomb went off in his house. They had to jump blocks, broken furniture, and a lot more before they finally arrived at the back door. Jonathan pulled the door open and held it for Damon.
"I can hear them coming, you go ahead, I'll close the door behind us. Move!" Without thinking, Damon stepped out of the door not knowing Jonathan Martin had a plan of his own.
As soon as Damon stepped out of the house, he saw the shadows move. "Watch out!" He screamed hoping that Jonathan would jump out but the old man pushed the door closed, locking it in place.
"Shit!"
Damon ran mad, hitting the door with all his might but it was unbreakable. He could hear the sound of tearing flesh behind the door. He wanted to go in and save Jonathan but he couldn't do a thing. Angry and tired, he slipped to the ground in tears.
The city of fangs has lost another hero to Dearkson and his council.
"Ahhggrh!" He roared so loud the house rattled. He couldn't let this continue. If Laila can stop it and save them, then he would have to go to her and bring her back home just like he had promised the council but this time, he wasn't going to give her to them as a criminal, he was going to take her to the crowning seat of New Orleans, she would put an end to the council once and for all.
Jimmy and Thompson had not returned to the edge of southern California as directed by their Captian Carter. Rather they remained in the downtown part of New Orleans in search of Damon. They had followed every route in the city, searching for them. It had been days and they were tired, but they were not going to give up. They promised to get to the root of the Elena case and they would do just that.
Thompson turned on the volume of the radio, trying to pick up any news from the headquarters about the search of Damon Michaels, but none brought up a piece of useful information except one.
''The Elena murder in Southern California has taken a different shift as the Police Force has closed down the case stating that it was simply a murder case as the deceased letter had said. Her friend Laila Danvers, surfaced last night clearing up everything that happened that night...' The reporter was saying.
"Did you hear that?" Thompson said turning to stare at Jimmy with his eyes almost falling out of their sockets in shock. "They found her?"
