chapter 28
chapter 28
He shouldn't have stolen this car from that damned woman. He shouldn't have pointed a go at that receptionist! –different scenarios played in his head and he regretted his actions.
Nevertheless, he couldn't give up. He kept on going. He hadn't met anyone on the road, not a car, or human ever since a passed a fleet of trucks a few days ago. He was starting to worry he would get lost with no fuel and probably starve. Maybe he should turn back, but before he could do that, he needed to be sure that the police force wasn't after him anymore. He needed to be sure that he would be a free man once he returned. Laila Danvers was meant to be his key to freedom. She was supposed to be his trump card. Once he returned with her his sanctions would be reduced but if he returned without her, they would consider him a madman and strip him from his uniform. They would take him to jail!
Damn!
He had made a stupid mistake. Jimmy was right all along. He had allowed the case to get into him so much, he forgot about everything else.
Now, he needed to go back and face the consequences. To be sure the roads back were safe, he turned on the radio and tuned the channels to pick up any news that mentioned a thing or two about the mad detective. But none of the channels said anything about him. He smiled, they had forgotten him. There was no roadblock waiting to take him to jail. But he still had to be careful. He would go back and take his family out of the country and start all over again. Yes, that was what he would do.
He turned to another channel and groaned. The channels were not helpful. Just when he was about to give up, he picked up a different channel, and the news that was playing made his fingers hang on the button.
'The Elena murder in Southern California has taken a different shift as the Police Force has closed down the case stating that it was simply a murder case as the deceased letter had said. Her friend Laila Danvers, surfaced last night clearing up everything that happened that night...' The reporter was saying.
Mike could not believe his ears. Laila Danvers had resurfaced in the city. That wasn't possible! They were making the story up! He needed to find this new Laila Danvers. What was she trying to do?
He was about to make a turn back into the city when a truck moving at a slow pace right in front of him, caught his attention. Who was that? In the middle of nowhere? His detective senses took the better of him and he drove fast till he got to the truck. He looked in and the driver, a gruff man, waved at him. The man looked like one of those serial killers in movies and rather than run, Mike couldn't do that, humanity depended on him to wipe out people like this! —he thought to himself
"Where are you going?" The gruff man asked him.
Mike raised his brow wondering why the man was talking to him in the first place. But the detective side of him wouldn't let the mango. "Pull over!" He yelled at the man and strangely enough the man obeyed.
The man parked his truck by the side of the road and got down. Mike did the same, took out his gun, placed it in his back pocket, and walked up to him.
"Who are you?" Mike asked flashing him his Identification card.
The man narrowed his eyes at the card and smiled. "Mike Galefield..." He trailed. "I have been looking for you."
Before Mike could cook up a reply, the man moved at a speed faster than lightning and grabbed at his neck and Mike struggled to try to stay focused, remembering all the defensive lessons in learned in the academy. But none worked.
Mike tried to move his legs so he could kick the strange man, but the man was too strong for him. He couldn't budge him no matter how hard he tried to move. He even tried to move his fingers to pull at his gun but that too was in vain.
"You should stop fighting it, you won't feel a thing..." The man whispered to Mike's ears.
The man pressed down on his neck and before long, Mike fell unconscious. His body slumped to the floor and the man dragged him to his car. He tied up his arms and legs, then scoffed at the body.
The strange man picked up his phone and dialed his boss's number.
"My lord, I have the detective."
Damon didn't want to tell Logan about Max's death but he had no choice. He didn't want Logan to endanger himself by returning to the city unprotected while they still didn't know who exactly killed Max. But after the call, Damin was able to pick out Kyle as the suspect.
Now, all he had to do was find out all he could about Laila before returning to the field to get her, himself. He might not know the entire story now, but he knew Laila Dancer was very important to him and the Lord Supremo, having her in his hands, would be like having a winning card, the trump card.
Damon walked out of the packhouse and jumped into one of the trucks. He was going into town in search of answers. There was only one council member who could tell him the truth about Laila and that was Jonathan Martin. One of the oldest werewolves in the city, he was known to always go against Dearkson and Damon knew he could trust his words to be true.
He drove down the streets to Jonathan's house. On getting there the doors were closed and Damon was starting to get worried that he wouldn't find the old man there. He alighted from the car and walked to the door, then he knocked.
"Hello?" He called.
He knocked again for the second time and no one came to answer. He left the door and walked to the side of the house. Everything seemed quiet and it was starting to eat at him. What's going on here?
Where are Jonathan and his family?
A sharp noise to his left caught his attention and he turned to look at it, he missed the large sword that was targeted at his neck.
"What!" Damon exclaimed, staring down at the large sword that now sat on the wall.
"Oh my... I have grown so clumsy thank the goddess I didn't kill you, Alpha Damon!" Jonathan exclaimed with a breathy voice.
Damon looked at him, questioning his sanity. Was this man alright in the head? Why would he welcome his guests like this?
"Come on in before Dearkson sends more of these spies around." He led him to a hole hidden by a large boulder on the right side of the house and Damon went through. Jonathan stayed behind to pull the hole closed.
Damon could not talk, he moved around carefully watching his back, anticipating another attack. Maybe he made a mistake coming here, Jonathan was not mentally stable anymore.
"Where is everybody? " Damon dared to ask, seeing how empty the man's house was.
"Oh, I sent them away from here. You see, Dearkson plans to kill me..." He said shaking his finger in the air. "Come have a seat."
He leads Damon to where he used to have a living room. The place is turned upside down with all kinds of stuff. The chairs and couches are broken, save for two small stools. The tables are turned to the side like a battle zone. The chandelier was shattered on the floor and no one bothered to clean it. In simple terms, his entire house looked like a bomb went off in it.
"What happened here?" Damon asked him, as he took one of the surviving still to seat on.
"Well, Dearkson sent his boys over to kill me and my family. They underestimated me!" He said, bursting out in hysterical laughter. "I outsmarted them!" He said amidst laughter.
Everyone knew just how much Dearkson hated Jonathan, but even Dearkson knew how dangerous it would be to kill someone like Jonathan. The people would go mad. He was the only council member that considered other wolves and cared for their well-being. He wasn't greedy like the rest of the ten members who followed Dearkson's command without question.
"Jonathan, can you tell me exactly what happened?" Damon asked. Now he understood. Jonathan might be a little weird but he was a wise man. He never did something without a reason.
"They keep following after Laila forgetting that the people have other things disturbing them that are greater than Laila..." Jonathan spat staring out the window.
"It's a good thing you came here. I don't know if I can keep up this defense for long. Dear son will try every means necessary to get rid of me, "
"He is trying all he can to convince the others that Laila is evil when she isn't."
Now, this got Damon's attention. This was what he came for and Jonathan was giving it to him for free. He didn't even have to ask or beg for it.
"What do you mean by that?" Damon asked.
"Laila Danvers is the first she-wolf in a century but I tell you, my dear Alpha, it isn't a death sentence. Her destiny is to help the werewolves not to destroy them. Clarkson has been lying to everyone. "
"But why?" Damon wondered. "Why would he do that? If she is going to save all of us, why is he changing the lines? Why does he want to prosecute her?"
Jonathan looked at Damon and smiled, a long sickening smile. "He isn't going to prosecute her. If Dearkson gets his hands on Laila, he is going to kill her. Do you know why?" He asked and Damon shook his head.
"Because the prophecy also said that Laila was going to end the council and its wickedness. All of them on that table are greedy people! They only want power. No one wants to take care of the people. No one has the true leadership qualities we need to survive in this world. And no one wants to let go."
"He doesn't understand that these things he is doing are only leading her to her path. He is only leading her to fulfill her purpose on earth once she gains enough strength and training she will be back for him and all those who stand in her path will receive the wrath of the goddess herself! "
"Power is sweet my dear Alpha, but it is also a drunken liquid. Take too much of it and you will be lost. Clarkson and his men are lost and only Laila can save us from their wrath! "
Damon was dumbstruck. All this while, he had thought Laila was some evil wolf that would destroy all werewolves. He thought she needed to be stopped unless there would be destruction everywhere.
Dearkson lied to him!
He lied to everyone!
Laila Danvers isn't evil! She is their savior!
