Chapter 70

Chapter 70
Scarlett POV

I couldn’t concentrate at dinner that night, and I found myself surfing the internet finding information about dragons. I remember Becky saying that Marie may be a dragon, which is highly unlikely but who knows maybe she’s a dragon trainer or something of that sort. I just needed to know something about her.

“We’re supposed to be bonding over dinner,” Jack linked me.

I dropped my phone on the table and looked up at him with a smile. How do I thank him enough for bringing my enemy so close to me? If only he knew how grateful yet miserable I was.

“Sorry, how was your day?” I asked as I cut some bits of the roasted chicken onto my plate.
“Not so great, I’ve been having sleepless nights…” he gobbled down some chicken and stared at me, “it’s becoming hard to concentrate at work because of this.”

I wasn’t going to act in a suspicious way anymore, getting rid of Marie wasn’t something I should feel guilty about.
“What is it? Is it Marie?”

“Scarlett, do you know why I’m worried about her?”
I shook my head knowing very well it was some nonsense about some kindness she showed him back at Red Rock.

“Because I feel responsible for her, I pressured her to come here with me and she didn’t hesitate, then I brought her here and just abandoned her to her fate. I feel like a terrible person…”

“No, no… You should never feel that way. She’s not a pup who needs babysitting and supervision. She’s probably fine somewhere enjoying her life.” I tried to cheer him up.

“Scarlett, tell me the truth. You had a hand in this right?”
His voice was calm yet so stern and his wolf was glaring in his eyes, it sent shivers down my spine but I refused to be intimidated.

“I don’t,”
“Just tell me where she is, I won’t be mad.”

I stared at him and chuckled. I wish I could believe that, but Jack is not someone you trust when Marie is involved, he goes into full protective mode and it makes me doubt his feelings for me sometimes. Lady Meg assured me that sleeping with him would solve the problem but I don’t think it did us any good.

“According to my investigation, you left the forest a few minutes after entering and you came back with a duffel bag yet you never hunted any prey, nor did you submit any prey at the arena.”

My wolf was whimpering a bit loudly enough to distract those at the table with us. I looked around and locked eyes with Becky who was seated a few seats away across from the table.

“Is he still whining about that snake?” She linked me.
“Yes!” I linked back.

“These guys.” She remarked.
I stared at Jack,

“That wasn’t my prey, that was Becky’s prey. I helped her submit it.” I replied.
“So why did you go to the cargo train station? Is that where your arena is located?” He snapped.

I tried to ignore him but I was upset, everyday he gave me more reasons to walk away from him. He was making it hard for me to enjoy our bond like I was supposed to.

“I didn’t go to the cargo station, whoever is giving you that information is just trying to spread malicious tales about me!” I snapped. We both looked around to see if anyone was watching us or eavesdropping on our petty squabble.

It looked like they all knew something was going on but nobody dared say anything. Becky linked me again.

“Keep him distracted. I will steal into Marie’s room now.”
“What!” I linked her, wasn’t it enough that we were being accused of Marie’s disappearance? What was she going to do in her room?

“This is the perfect time to search her room for her IDs or anything suspicious. So just keep them all distracted.” She explained.
“No Becky!” I protested.

But she got up and excused herself from the table.
Jack’s eyes followed as she trotted away till she was out of sight then it came back to me.

“That’s your partner in crime right?” He whispered sternly,
“Just link me, the rest are eavesdropping.” I shot back.

“I’m leaving the table, come with me.” He linked me.
No, following him would not be a good idea, we might run into Becky or something worse,

“I’m hungry.” I protested in a reasonable way, then resumed ravishing my meal. I know that ticked Jack off but at this point, I had no concern for what made him mad and what made him happy. He didn’t care about mine either, This fight was over, I wasn’t going to argue with him over Marie now or ever again.

He read the room and got the message, I guess he concluded that I wasn’t going to follow him so he also went back to his plate. Every minute he would steal an angry glance at me, but I pretended that I hadn’t noticed it. He could be mad but eventually he would come around.

After about 30 minutes I noticed that Becky wasn’t back and she hadn't linked me, Where could she be?
“Becky, is everything okay?” I linked her.

“Scarlett, she’s from the Southern dragon kingdom. Check on them now!” She linked back as if she were in a hurry to deliver the message.
“What? Becky, come back here, what are you still doing there?”

There was no response,
“Becky? Becky? Quit playing and link back.” She still didn’t link back. Warren stared at me, and he looked as pale as a ghost.

He got up and also excused himself, something wasn’t right. I wanted to excuse myself too but I knew Jack would follow me. So I held on and trusted Warren to help out. However after 10 minutes dinner was over and he also wasn’t back, now I was left alone in the situation, worried sick about what could possibly go wrong.

I rushed out of the dining hall when dinner was over and went straight to the maid’s quarters. I had to find Becky, I had to find her somehow. I got to the room and there was no sign of her, only Warren standing in the middle of the room feeling hopeless.
