Chapter 7 The Unknown
Liam’s POV
Elena’s scream cut through the garden.
She was just there, twisting and turning, trying to crawl away from the pain that was rushing through her body.
Then she stopped.
“Elena!” I dropped to my knees, holding her in my arms. She looked so pale like she was dying, if I couldn't hear her heartbeat I'd think she was.
Her skin felt so hot beneath my touch.
“What the heck?” Her eyes opened, glowing bright purple. It looked so strange, then it rolled and she became still.
“No, no—stay with me,” I muttered, pressing my forehead to hers.
I have never felt this helpless before. “You have to stay with me.”
My wolf wrestled me for control as he roared in my head.
Panic pushed through my mind.
We have to protect our mate.
I lifted her into my arms, as l walked towards the hall, careful not to shake her too much.
“Alpha!” I looked up as the guards rushed into the garden, their eyes wide. I was so worried about Elena that I forgot that her body was still glowing.
“Stand down.” They paused, then slowly removed their hands from their weapons.
“Move aside,” I barked. “Now.”
They didn't hesitate this time.
I ran.
The council hall doors slammed open as I burst inside.
Conversations died instantly. Everyone was looking at me now.
I was glad that Elena had stopped glowing before we got here, the last thing I needed right now was to deal with scared werewolves.
“Move,” I shoved the people in front of me. I laid her down gently on a long table, tossing aside the cups and wine.
“Rowan,” I shouted. “Elder Rowan, get here please,” I didn't care if I was talking to an Elder that way, all I cared about was saving my mate.
“Goddess spare us,” he whispered, walking slowly. “Liam, what happened?”
“I found her in the garden, she collapsed,” I said as I brushed her hair from her face.
“She was attacked. Then—this.”
For very clear reasons, I couldn't tell them the entire truth, too many eyes were watching.
Rowan got the message, he turned to the crowd. “Brothers and sisters, the rogue attack has been handled, but I suggest every wolf should head back to their packs. Fear not, it is almost dawn, and we all know that rogues don't travel during the day.
Some wolves glanced at each other not entirely convinced by Rowan's words.
“What are you waiting for, you need to head back, we don't know when next these rogues will attack, who knows which pack will be next.” Josh added.
That had everyone moving and planning to head back to their packs.
“Now, tell me exactly what happened,” Rowan insisted.
“Not here,” I said, then turned to Alpha Derrick.” Take me to the pack's clinic.” I glared at me. “Y—yes that's way, Alpha.”
“Where's the doctor,” I asked as soon as we got there.
“I'll go look for her, she must be attending to the injured.” Alpha Derrick bowed as he left.
“He's gone,” Josh said as he watched Alpha Derrick head out.
Then I told them everything, how Elena was cornered by a rogue and a hooded woman watching her and then her eyes and body glowing purple as she screamed.
I winced inwardly as I recalled everything, fear washing over me once more.
She's alive. I kept telling myself.
“Interesting,” Rowan looked over at Elena who laid on the hospital bed. “I have never heard of such a thing, and you said she has no wolf.”
“Yes,” I didn't tell him that only for a moment I had felt a pull them I heard a voice in my head.
Help us, help Elena. It said. I kept that part to myself because it felt personal.
“So what exactly happened to her that made her glow, maybe she was trying to phase?” Josh suggested frowning.
“Maybe..” but I didn't think so, wolves don't glow when they phase, not that I have heard of.
Before we could talk more, Alpha Derrick walked in with the doctor.
She was a small woman, her hair packed in a low bun with blue eyes. Her coat had her name tag. Doctor Stella.
“Alpha Liam, Elder Rowan, it's an honor to meet you,” she smiled.
“Is there anything wrong with her?” I asked not wasting any time on greetings.
She moved closer to Elena, and began checking her. “She has a concussion, she must have hit her head pretty hard on something, and there are also bruises all over her body, some look fresh probably from the attack earlier but some are older and taking a lot of time to heal because she's clearly not eating enough.
She turned to me. “Which pack is she from?”
“Your pack,” I was seeing red now, these people had been torturing my mate.
“Do you have something to say, Alpha? Before I rip your eyes out for touching what's mine.”
“I—I didn't know she was—, she had stolen from my Luna, and my pack doesn't take theft lightly.”
“Your pack?” I scoffed as I grabbed him by his shirt. “And what makes you so sure it was her?”
“We—we found it—” I squeezed harder.
“Liam, he can't breathe, let him go,” Josh touched my shoulder but I refused to listen.
“Liam, stop this madness this moment, you have other things to be worried about.”
I released him, remembering Elena still needed to rest. “Get out of my sight.” I growled as Alpha Derrick rushed out of the room.
“Will she be fine?” I said, gritting my teeth.
“Y—yes she will, she just needs to rest. I'm sorry about—”
“Leave us,” she turned quickly and left the room.
I looked closely at Elena now as I sat down, she did have bruises all over her body.
Goddamnit. How did I not notice that?
“Josh, gather the guards and make sure the pack grounds are secured, I don't trust these people, call home and find out how everything is over there.”
“Yes, Alpha,” Josh left.
“I will head out now, the elders are still here and I doubt they will be easily fooled like the others. They will want an explanation about the girl. I can feel that she's… different and I know they can sense it to.”
I nodded. I would deal with the elders later, now I just had to focus on Elena.
Rowan left and I took my time to study my mate.
Goddess, she was beautiful,
her plump lips slightly opened as she slept.
I brushed aside her hair so I could look at her clearly.
“What are you, my little mate.”
