BETHANY'S POV
The sun was barely up, and yet I was already wide awake, a gnawing feeling of unease settling in my stomach. Ever since my conversation with Joel, I hadn’t been able to shake the feeling that something was coming. He had been bitter and angry, his resentment practically oozing out of him, and I knew he and Vivian were planning something. I just didn’t know when or how they would strike.
I made my way down the hall, trying to keep my nerves under control. Damien had been nothing but reassuring, but even his presence couldn’t fully quiet my worries. This was our family we were talking about, our daughter’s safety, and I couldn’t afford to take any chances.
Damien was already in the kitchen when I arrived, a mug of coffee in his hand. He looked up when I entered, his eyes immediately softening.
“Morning,” he greeted, his voice gentle. “Couldn’t sleep?”
I shook my head, managing a small smile. “Not with everything going on. I keep thinking about what Joel said, and… I just can’t shake the feeling that they’re planning something. It’s like a storm building, and we’re just waiting for it to hit.”
Damien’s jaw tightened, a flicker of protectiveness crossing his face. “I know. I feel it too. But we’re ready, Bethany. The security around Zara is tighter than ever, and I’ve made sure the pack is on high alert. If Joel or Vivian tries anything, we’ll be ready for them.”
I nodded, taking a deep breath. I trusted Damien completely, knew that he would do anything to protect Zara and me. But the worry still lingered, an ever-present reminder of the threat hanging over us.
Just as I was about to respond, Damien’s phone buzzed on the counter. He picked it up, his brows furrowing as he read the message.
“It’s from one of our scouts,” he said, his tone tense. “They spotted Joel near the pack’s border early this morning. He didn’t try to cross, but he was watching—almost like he was waiting for something.”
A chill ran down my spine. “He’s testing us, trying to see if we’re prepared.”
“Exactly,” Damien replied, his gaze hard. “He wants to see if we’re on guard, if we’ll react. It’s like he’s setting the stage for whatever he and Vivian are planning.”
I clenched my fists, anger bubbling up inside me. Joel had no right to do this, to stalk us like we were his enemies. But if he thought he could intimidate us, he was sorely mistaken.
“What do we do?” I asked, my voice steady but resolute. “Do we confront him?”
Damien shook his head. “Not yet. That’s what he wants—he’s looking for a reaction, something he can use against us. But we’re not going to play his game. For now, we keep watching him, tracking his movements. And if he steps out of line, we’ll be there.”
I nodded, feeling a surge of determination. This was our territory, our family, and we weren’t going to let Joel and Vivian threaten it. Whatever they were planning, we would be ready.

The day passed in tense anticipation, each hour stretching longer than the last. Damien kept his scouts on high alert, checking in regularly for any signs of Joel or Vivian near the pack’s borders. I stayed close to Zara, keeping a watchful eye on her as she played with some of the younger pack members. She was blissfully unaware of the tension around her, her laughter ringing through the air as she chased after one of the pups.
Watching her, I felt a fierce protectiveness rise within me. This was what Joel and Vivian were threatening—this happiness, this innocence. They were trying to tear apart the life Damien and I had built, and I would do whatever it took to stop them.
As the afternoon wore on, Damien joined me in the garden, his presence a comforting anchor in the midst of the storm. He watched Zara with a soft smile, but I could see the worry etched in his eyes.
“She has no idea, does she?” he murmured, his gaze fixed on Zara. “How much danger she could be in.”
I shook my head, my heart aching. “And I intend to keep it that way. She doesn’t need to know about Joel or Vivian. All she needs is to feel safe, to know that we’ll always protect her.”
Damien nodded, his expression hardening. “And we will. Whatever it takes.”

Just as evening began to fall, one of Damien’s scouts approached us, his expression tense. “Alpha, Luna,” he greeted, nodding respectfully. “We have news. Vivian was spotted leaving the pack’s territory—she crossed over into neutral ground, headed toward the town.”
Damien and I exchanged a glance, a silent understanding passing between us. “She’s meeting someone,” I said, my voice low. “They’re planning something, and she’s gathering whatever they need.”
Damien nodded, his gaze cold and calculating. “And we’re going to find out exactly what it is.”
He turned to the scout. “Keep an eye on her, but don’t let her know she’s being followed. I want to know every move she makes, every person she meets. If she’s bringing someone in to help her, I want to know who they are.”
The scout nodded, a determined look in his eyes. “Understood, Alpha. I’ll keep you updated.”
As the scout disappeared back into the shadows, I felt a surge of satisfaction. We were two steps ahead, watching their every move. And when the time came, we would be ready to strike.

That night, as Damien and I sat together in the quiet of our room, I couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that lingered in my chest. We had taken every precaution, put every safeguard in place. But there was still a part of me that feared we were overlooking something, that Joel and Vivian would find a way to slip through the cracks.
Damien seemed to sense my unease. He reached over, taking my hand in his, his grip warm and steady. “We’re going to get through this, Bethany,” he said, his voice a soothing balm to my frayed nerves. “Whatever they’re planning, we’ll be ready.”
I nodded, leaning into his warmth. “I know. I just… I can’t shake the feeling that something is coming. Something big.”
He wrapped an arm around me, pulling me close. “Let them come. Whatever they throw at us, we’ll face it together.”
In that moment, I felt a surge of gratitude for him, for his unwavering support and strength. No matter what happened, I knew I could face it with Damien by my side.
\---
The following morning, Damien received a report from one of his scouts. Vivian had been seen meeting with a group of unfamiliar faces—outsiders who didn’t belong to any pack nearby. They were rough-looking, the type who didn’t shy away from trouble. It didn’t take much to guess what they were: hired hands, mercenaries brought in to do Vivian and Joel’s dirty work.
“She’s escalating,” I said, my voice laced with anger. “They’re not just planning something small. They’re bringing in people who can do real damage.”
Damien’s gaze was steely, his jaw clenched. “Then we’ll be ready. I’ll increase security around the pack, double the patrols. If they think they can bring outsiders into our territory, they’re in for a surprise.”
The rest of the day was spent reinforcing our defenses, every member of the pack mobilizing to ensure our territory was secure. The mood was tense but focused, a determination in everyone’s eyes. They knew what was at stake, and they were prepared to fight for it.
That evening, as I stood on the edge of the pack’s border, watching the shadows stretch across the forest, I felt a sense of calm settle over me. We were ready. Joel and Vivian could try to tear us apart, but they would never succeed.
Damien joined me, his presence a steady comfort. He wrapped an arm around me, and I leaned into him, finding solace in his strength.
“We’re going to be okay,” he murmured, his voice a quiet reassurance. “They may try, but they’ll never break us.”
I nodded, my resolve hardening. Whatever Joel and Vivian threw our way, we would face it together. They may have their mercenaries, their twisted plans, but we had something stronger: a bond built on trust, loyalty, and love.
As the first stars began to appear in the sky, I knew that no matter what lay ahead, we would stand firm. Joel and Vivian could plot, scheme, and bring in outsiders, but they would never understand the strength of our family, our pack.
And when they made their move, they would learn that we were unbreakable.
