A Small Glimpse Of Happiness

Perhaps the way he knelt down before me gave me a startle. My thoughts were all over the place that I hadn’t given myself enough time to absorb his words.

While Phineas lost all of his weariness at that instant and was applauding from the sidelines and Varick finally stood up and returned his stoic expression, I was standing there—speechless— that a whirlwind of events happened in a span of a day.

The invasion, the truth about Lenalee, her death…

… and now, I was pregnant with the Alpha Leader’s child.

Now it made sense why I was having a nauseating feeling last night and while I was grieving, I didn’t sense a new life in my womb.

He held my cheek, and I stiffened from his foreign caring gesture. It felt warm and assuring to be touched by him.

“You were hurt by those rogues. How were you feeling?”

“I-I’m fine, r-really. They didn’t hurt me that much. Also, my regenerative ability helped me feel better.” I was not used to his kindness that my face burned up, glancing away from the way he gave me a longing stare.

‘Is it just me or I have a weakness for my husband’s eyes?’

He was ready to speak until Varick raised his brows as if a thought came to his mind before he turned to glare at the High Mage.

Noticing the look, Phineas’s rambling of congratulations were suddenly cut when the Alpha Leader turned and headed to his direction.

“You gave her alcohol last night.”

Phineas frowned as he crossed his arms. “Well, how should I know the Luna’s pregnant? For all we know, it contributed more than your efforts of reproduction.”

This only infuriated my husband more as he grabbed his collar and lifted the High Mage up.

“‘O-okay there, Lord Varick. I was humoring you with my nonsense as usual!”

But Varick glowered and I knew where this would go, so I placed my hand on his arm.

“I-If this would make you feel better, I can go see a doctor to make sure t-the baby’s safe.” Hopefully, this could appease my husband or else I would lose another friend.

I gave a silent triumphant hum after Varick released Phineas.

“High Mage, I want you to bring her to the Seer.”

Phineas’s face paled and his jaw dropped, readying to refute…until he bit his lower lips.

It would be better not to do so, seeing that Varick was about to harm him not too long ago.

As for me, I was more surprised that I would be seeing the Seer soon.

I blinked. “Shouldn’t I see a doctor instead?”

Varick crossed his arms. “They are…occupied with their duties to tend the injured."

"Oh…" I lowered my head.

"I would bring a doctor to the Seer’s house once everything’s settled.”

Ah, so Varick would be busy for a while.

“If you need me, use the High Mage to see me." He swiftly turned, heading outside the bathroom."

"Wait!" I ran after him and I saw irritation after he glanced at me.

"You have to be careful from now on, Rosaria." He didn’t like that I was running to him. That irked me as if I was that vulnerable.

"I know that!" I snapped and I realized I shouldn’t let my emotions show especially when the Alpha was the most worn out  among us.  "But please don't burn the house where we stayed."

He sighed. "We will discuss that later. Anything else?’

He knew me too well that I had a lot of things in mind.

“About Lenalee…”

“Your cult took care of her corpse,” he said without beating around the bush.

I would be angry for his mockery, but unfortunately I had gotten used to it by now.

“T-Thank you. Even the insult wasn’t necessary, but still, thank you for bringing her to them.”

Oh right, I shouldn’t forget this.

“Also, I never thanked you for all the things for my well being. So, thank you.”

He grunted, and he left, heading to the spiral staircase below without even a proper goodbye.

I turned beet red and, for some strange reason, I was hoping he would at least acknowledge that I thanked him.

‘What am I thinking, Hati?!’ I shook my head. ‘Is this how pregnancy work? I became unreasonably upset about something I should be used to?’

Now when I touched my womb, I stared at my stomach which I imagined to grow once months passed by. The news should make me happy. I mean,  I finally got what my husband wanted.

Yet, why was it I wasn't overjoyed by the thought of having a child?

It was a strange feeling.

I sighed and I noticed that Phineas had been wearing a different robe this time.

What was bizarre for me was the shocking purplish color of the cloth that could be irritating to the eyes.

Though I always thought Phineas was the type to blend in with the crowd, wearing dull tone color robes to hide himself as the High Mage.

But this time, he was wearing the opposite.

He noticed my stare, and he smirked. “Last night’s meeting with the Seer aggravated me that I wanted to do something to piss him off.”

“Oh, he doesn’t like the color purple!” He quipped and he chuckled at the child-like idea of teasing the Seer.

“By the way, now that you’re finally pregnant, you need to get a new wet nurse as soon as possible.”

It was a sensitive topic I wished we didn’t dwell on. Yet, a wet nurse’s job was crucial during childbirth.

“This time I would like to choose my own wet nurse,” I said.

He pondered for a while. “That depends on what the Seer wants from you.”

“What does he want from me?”

“Well, after our conversation—which was cut briefly from all the damn officials popping out to keep Lord Varick busy—he said he would like to meet you if you have signs of pregnancy.”

“Who would have thought it would be this soon?” He chuckled. “By the way, is this your first time meeting the Seer?”

I nodded. “He was never in public, right? I’ve heard he always kept himself locked inside his house and only allowed the Alpha Leader and the Officials of the Skollist Pack to disturb him.”

“Ha! That wolf is one strange guy.!” Phineas mocked.

‘You have to speak for yourself,’ I thought.

Then a thought came to me. “If I am not mistaken, Seers are chosen by the Moon Goddess as the observers and the messengers of each pack.”

Phineas nodded  then he started teasing. “Here I thought you only knew Hatiism.”

I frowned as I crossed my arms. “Father wouldn’t let us feel ignorant outside the church. Though, I wasn’t exposed to meeting Varick or any of the Officials of the Skollist Pack until I became the Luna.”

“Good, then you probably have a lot of questions for him, isn’t that right?”

I was surprised that Phineas caught on with my sudden interest of meeting the Seer. It’s not the pregnancy that I wished to see him.

Rather, I wanted to know in the first place….

….how a Hatiist nun-to-be became a fated mate of the Alpha Leader.
