Chapter 23 The Choice

Chapter 23 The Choice

FLASHBACK

The first day he didn’t come, I thought nothing of it. The second day, a thread of worry began to unwind in my chest. By the end of the week, the thread had become a rope, coiling tight and suffocating. The oak tree stood empty, a silent monument to a promise that was starting to feel like a dream. I went every day at sunset. I waited until the last light faded from the sky. He never came.

Rumors trickled into our territory, whispers of instability, of challenges to the succession. I clung to them, using them to patch the holes in my hope. He was busy, he was staying away to protect me. I built a fortress of these excuses, but the walls were thin, and the dread was a cold wind that seeped through the cracks.

Then, after three weeks, he was there.

I saw him from a distance, standing under our tree, and my heart leaped into my throat, a wild, joyful bird. I ran, my feet barely touching the ground, the worry of the past weeks melting away in a single, radiant moment. He had come. He had finally come.

But as I drew closer, the joy curdled in my stomach.

He stood perfectly still, his posture rigid. He wasn't the boy who had kissed me with desperate passion, he was a stranger carved from stone and ice. The warmth in his eyes was gone, replaced by a flat, cold distance that made my steps falter.

"Garrick?" I said, my voice small.

He didn't move to embrace me, he didn't smile. "Anika."

The single word was a door slamming shut. I stopped a few feet from him, my arms hanging uselessly at my sides. "Where have you been? I was so worried, I heard the rumors…"

"The rumors are true," he interrupted, his voice devoid of emotion. "My father is dead. The pack is on a knife's edge, I have assumed my role as Alpha."

The confirmation should have brought me comfort, a reason for his absence. But his tone, his stance, everything about him was wrong. "I'm so sorry," I whispered, taking a tentative step forward. "I know you loved him. But, we're together now. We can face this together. Our plan…"

"Our plan was a fantasy," he said, the words clean and sharp, like a surgeon's blade. "Conceived by children who did not understand the world."

I felt the words like a physical blow, stumbling back a step. "What are you saying?"

"I am saying it is over." He finally looked at me, and the emptiness in his gaze was more terrifying than any anger. "I am returning to my territory to lead my pack. I am leaving tonight, and you can’t come with me."

The world tilted. The air grew thin. "No," I breathed. "No, you don't mean that. Garrick, look at me. This is me, Anika. You love me, you vowed."

A muscle twitched in his jaw. For a fraction of a second, I saw a crack in the ice, a flicker of the torment beneath. It was gone as quickly as it appeared. "Love is a luxury an Alpha cannot afford. You would be a distraction, a vulnerability my enemies would exploit without a second thought. I cannot be worried about your safety while I am fighting for the survival of my pack."

"So you're throwing me away? For your own safety?" The fury began to rise, hot and sharp, scalding the inside of my chest.

"For your safety!" he snapped, the first real emotion breaking through, a flash of raw, frantic frustration. "Can you not see that? If you were with me, you would be a target, every day would be a risk. I would be constantly looking over my shoulder, terrified that someone would use you to get to me. Here, you are safe."

"Safe?" I choked out a bitter, broken laugh. "You think this is safety? You are tearing my heart out and you call it safety?"

I launched myself at him then, my fists pounding against his chest, he didn't try to stop me. He stood there, taking it, a solid, unyielding wall of muscle and duty. "You vowed! You promised me a future! You liar! You coward!"

He caught my wrists, his grip like iron. He pulled me hard against him, so I could feel the frantic, wild beat of his heart, a betraying rhythm that screamed his lie. His face was inches from mine, his eyes blazing with a tortured heat.

"Do you think this is easy for me?" he growled, his voice a raw, husky whisper. "Do you think I want this? You are all I think about, you are all I want. But I have a duty, a responsibility to hundreds of people who depend on me. I cannot choose you over them, I will not drag you into a warzone because I am selfish enough to want you by my side."

His words were a confession and a condemnation. He was choosing, but it was destroying him. The chemistry between us, the lust and the love, was a fire that even his cold resolve couldn't extinguish. It raged in the space between our bodies, in the heat of his skin under my hands, in the desperate way his eyes devoured my face.

"Then let me choose," I pleaded, my voice breaking. "Let me choose the danger, let me choose you."

He shook his head, a slow, final movement. "I cannot. Your death would be on my hands, I would not survive it." He leaned in, his lips brushing my ear, and the intimacy of the gesture was a fresh agony. "This is the only way, you have to believe me. This is the only way to keep you alive."

He released me, pushing me back gently but firmly. The separation felt like having my skin ripped away.

"Wait for me," he said, the words a hollow echo of our past.

"I won't," I spat, the tears finally falling freely. "I will hate you until the day I die."

A shadow of unimaginable pain crossed his face. He gave a single, curt nod, as if accepting a sentence. "Then hate me, but live."

He turned and walked away. I collapsed at the base of our oak tree, the sobs wrenching from my body, the sounds of the forest drowned out by the sound of my world ending. He had made his choice, he chose his duty over our love, his pack over our promise.

And he left me in the ruins of a future that would never be, with a safety that felt like the worst kind of punishment.
