Chapter 22 The promise

Chapter 22 The promise

FLASHBACK

The world beyond our oak tree ceased to exist. The simmering tension of our lessons had boiled over into something undeniable, a current of pure need that pulled us together every time we were alone. His confession of love was not an end, but a beginning, the ignition of a fire that had been smoldering for weeks.

The next time I met him at the tree, the air was different. The pretense of lessons was gone. He stood waiting, and the moment he saw me, his eyes burned with a possessiveness that made my breath catch. He didn't speak. He simply closed the distance between us, his hands coming up to frame my face, and his mouth found mine in a kiss that was anything but gentle.

It was heat and desperation and a raw, youthful lust that shook me to my core. His tongue swept into my mouth, and I met him with equal fervor, my fingers clutching at the front of his tunic, pulling him closer until not a sliver of light could pass between our bodies. We stumbled back against the rough bark of the oak, the solid wood a stark contrast to the pliant softness of his lips, the hard muscles of his chest pressed against me.

When we broke apart, we were both gasping. His forehead rested against mine, his eyes closed. "I can't think straight when I'm near you," he breathed, his voice ragged.

"Then stop thinking," I whispered, daring to slide my hands under his tunic, splaying my fingers across the hot, smooth skin of his back.

A low groan rumbled in his chest. He kissed me again, deeper, his hands sliding from my face down my neck, over my shoulders, tracing the sides of my body with a touch that was both reverent and hungry. His thumbs brushed the undersides of my breasts through my dress, and a sharp, aching need coiled tight in my belly. I arched into his touch, a silent plea for more.

He broke the kiss, his breathing harsh. "Anika," he gasped, his voice strained. "We have to stop."

"Why?" I asked, my own voice thick with desire.

"Because if we don't, I won't be able to," he confessed, his eyes dark with a mixture of lust and something fiercer, a protective, almost painful devotion. "I want you. Stars, you have no idea how much I want you. But not here. Not like this, hidden away. You deserve more than a rushed coupling in the dirt."

His words doused the fire in my blood, replacing it with a warm, overwhelming flood of emotion. He was trying to protect me, even from himself. I cupped his cheek, forcing him to look at me. "Then when, Garrick? How?"

He captured my hand, pressing a fervent kiss to my palm. "We make a plan, a real one."

He slid down the trunk of the tree, pulling me with him until we sat nestled in the roots, our sides pressed together, his arm a heavy, warm weight around my shoulders. The scent of damp earth and his skin filled my senses.

"Listen to me," he said, his voice low and intense. "My father's health is failing. Everyone sees it. When I am Alpha, the first thing I will do is end the old feud, I'll formalize the alliance with your pack. I'll make it so strong, so unbreakable, that no one will dare question it."

I watched his face, lit with a passionate certainty I had never seen in anyone else. "My father will resist."

"He will agree," Garrick said, his jaw set in that stubborn line I was coming to adore. "Because I will make it the condition for my rule, and because I will offer him something he cannot refuse."

"What?"

"You." He turned to me, his eyes blazing. "I will publicly ask for your hand."

My heart felt too large for my chest. It was an audacious, impossible dream. And yet, hearing him say it with such conviction, I believed it could happen.

"And then?" I prompted, my voice barely a whisper.

"And then," he said, his voice dropping to a husky murmur, "I will make you my mate. In front of the entire pack, I will build you a chamber next to mine, with a window that looks out over the forest. You will be my equal in every way, my partner, my love."

He leaned in, his lips brushing my ear. "I will spend every night showing you exactly how much I love you. I will kiss every inch of your skin until you forget your own name, I will learn what makes you sigh and what makes you scream, and I will spend a lifetime doing both."

A hot blush spread across my entire body. His words painted a vivid, breathtaking picture of a future so perfect it ached. The sexual tension between us, banked for a moment, flared back to life, hotter than ever. It was a promise of physical ecstasy, a testament to the deep, consuming chemistry that hummed between us every second we were together.

"I want that," I confessed, turning my face to his. "I want all of it, I want you."

"Then it's settled," he said, a slow, devastating smile spreading across his face. He looked younger in that moment, free of the weight he usually carried. He looked like a boy in love. "This is our vow to each other, we’ll see this through, no matter what our families say, no matter how long it takes. We will fight for this."

He held out his hand, palm up. A formal gesture, yet deeply intimate.

I placed my hand in his. His fingers closed around mine, strong and sure. "I vow it," I said, the words feeling sacred in the quiet clearing.

"I vow it," he echoed, his gaze locked with mine.

He brought our clasped hands to his lips and kissed my knuckles, his eyes never leaving me. The promise hung in the air between us, solid and real. We had a secret, we had a plan, we had a future.

We sat there as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of fire, talking in hushed tones about our life to come. He described the lodge he would build, the reforms he would make. I told him about the healing techniques I wanted to learn, the gardens I wanted to plant. We wove a tapestry of dreams so beautiful I could almost touch it.

When it was time to go, he walked home and pulled me into one last, searing kiss, a brand of his promise on my lips.

"Soon," he whispered against my mouth.

"Soon," I whispered back.

I walked back to my father's lodge, my steps light, my heart soaring. The path was dark, but I felt no fear. I carried a light inside me, a brilliant, unshakable faith in the boy with stormy eyes and the future we had sworn to build together.

I had no way of knowing that the vow we made under the sheltering branches of the oak tree was the most fragile thing in the world, and that the future we planned was already crumbling, destined to be buried in the ashes of a betrayal I could not yet foresee.
