Something Fishy is going on

Something Fishy is going on
SERENA’S POV

I got closer to the prison gate, and just as I was about to take another step forward, a hefty guard with a receding hairline stopped me.

“This place is out of bounds for people like you,” he informed me.

“What is going on, and why are your colleagues suddenly disorganized?” I asked. I could not just leave like that.

“Nothing out of control,” he replied without hesitation.

I was not sure if I could take his words seriously, but since I had no choice, I would. Our eyes locked, and without saying anything, he signaled for me to leave. I actually planned on doing that.

“Are you sure you do not need help?” I asked again.

“We do not, thanks for your concern,” he replied in a deep, husky tone.

He must have thought I had nothing better to do, and that was why I offered to help. The truth was that I wanted to step into the prison to check on Dean.

I wanted to be sure he was fine and that he was not the reason the guards suddenly became disorganized. Aria thinks he is fine, so I would take her word for it.

“Can you leave right now?” he asked softly. If he had not spoken that way, he might have gotten me pissed. Was he expecting me to take to my heels?

Reluctantly, I turned back and headed to the training ground where the execution would take place. The majority of the pack citizens must be there already.

Alpha Basil had not stepped into the compound today, or my nostrils would have told me. His scent had been registered in my head ever since he marked me as his.

He and his brother might keep me and the pack citizens waiting today. They are not used to showing up on time, and it is bad, but I do not think they know.

“Hi Serena.” A tiny voice caught my ears, and I stopped almost immediately.

The voice came from behind me, so I turned to see who it was.

“It is me,” a not so young lady said. She must have been the one who called my name.

She looked familiar, but I could not figure out where or how I met her. My memory does not serve me right all the time, so I cannot be blamed.

“Gigi, it is me, Gigi,” she introduced herself, and the name did ring a bell.

Asking her where she knew me from might be rude, so I waited for her to explain. It had been ten years since I left the pack, so I could not be blamed for forgetting some werewolves.

“I am so sorry this had to happen to Dean. He must have been manipulated into becoming an accomplice because the Dean I know would not do such a thing for…”

“My brother is innocent,” I cut in. I did not mind saying that to every werewolf I met.

Her words pissed me off so much that I was no longer interested in where I knew her from. I did not need to keep emphasizing that my brother was innocent, so I was done with her.

“There is something about her,” Aria mentioned. There was nothing about her to me.

“We probably attended the same school,” I cooed to Aria as I walked away. I was not interested in more.

“Serena!” her voice reached me, but I gladly listened with deaf ears.

My brother’s innocence would be proven to everyone today, so I would not have to do it myself anymore. That thought made me heave a deep sigh of relief.

Just as I expected, many werewolves were already at the training ground, waiting for Willow and Dean to be beheaded. Little did they know a plot twist awaited them.

I stood not too far away, still wondering why Alpha Bernard and Alpha Basil had not shown up. They never kept to time, and it was never cool.

“I should go to him again,” I mumbled. I should not keep waiting for him to show up when my brother’s life was at stake.

“Give him more time. He will show up soon,” Aria suggested.

A part of me wanted to listen, but I could not bring myself to remain there doing nothing. I turned and found Gigi standing behind me. She scared me.

“Is there a problem?” I asked, forced by her stare.

“No, I promise,” she replied with a chuckle that made me cringe.

It was written all over her that she was up to something, and I was not ready to find out what it was, at least not now.

I made my way inside and was only a few steps away from the door of his room. He was probably in there doing nothing.

I knocked, and the door opened the moment I did. Did he not lock it because he knew I would come back again?

I walked in, holding my breath. I hoped he was not naked; that would have been disastrous. To my surprise, there were no traces of him inside the room.

“Alpha Basil,” I called out. I was not a fan of calling his name, but I did it this time.

He had taken his bath already, so the chances of him being in the bathroom were low. Besides, he would have responded if he was actually there.

“Why is he nowhere to be found today of all days?” I snapped. He was taking things too lightly, and I was not okay with it.

I left the room determined to find him. He had better be somewhere executing the plan he mentioned, or he would have me to contend with.

“Has anyone seen him?” I asked a passing guard without hesitation.

“Who, ma’am?” he asked.

“Who else? Alpha Basil or maybe Alpha Bernard,” I replied sharply.

“They both rushed out not long ago,” he finally said, though he seemed unsure if he should tell me.

“Do you know where they went?” I asked, rubbing my forehead.

“No,” he answered.

“In what direction did they go?” I pressed further.

“I cannot say,” he murmured with his head bowed.

He must have been scared of what they would do to him if they found out he spoke to me.

Alpha Basil and Alpha Bernard were up to something, and they had better not play games with me. At this point, I did not even know what to do.

I returned to the compound, but there were still no traces of them. I headed for the prison, hoping to find them there.

“You are here again,” the same hefty guard said, blocking my way.

“I am not leaving until you tell me what is wrong this time,” I warned so he would not bother asking me to leave like before.

“And if I do not?” he asked, folding his arms. I could easily break those arms if I wanted to.

“Then I will prove to you who I am,” I said. I hated to do that, but I did it anyway.

Where was he when I was on the battlefield fighting for the pack? It would cost me nothing to force my way into the prison.

Even the blind could tell that something was wrong, and I was done being kept in the dark. What if it had to do with my brother?

“You must have heard about me and how I have never lost a battle. Imagine what would happen if I break into the prison and the Alphas find out. They will call you incompetent and get rid of you,” I said to his face. He could call it a threat, and I honestly did not care.

“In simpler terms, I am going in there, and you will not be able to stop me because of what I will do to you,” I added. He did not seem moved by my words.

I could stop talking and get straight into action, but for some reason, I did not feel like it.

“I am not threatened by you, and I just thought I should tell you,” he said finally. That was such a big lie.

“Something happened to Willow,” he said, still avoiding my eyes. I knew instantly that something was wrong.

“What?” I demanded. I was a fool for trusting Alpha Basil at any point.

“Only the Alphas can explain,” he replied. I would find out from them myself.
