Chapter 69 - They are werewolves! They are all werewolves!!

Lilith

MY FIRST CALL was to my best friend. I could only hope that she would tell me the truth, and we agreed to meet up for lunch. We hadn’t had a proper girls outing in a while, and I needed to see her face to face to get the answers I was looking for.

As I walked into the diner, I could smell the food, but I had been so on edge all morning, that I couldn’t even begin to imagine eating anything. Blanca waved from our favourite booth and I rushed over, hugging her as soon as she stood up.

“Wow! It feels like we haven’t done this in forever!” She laughed as we sat down, but I couldn’t fake it. Not around her. I knew that Blanca would see it instantly.

“Yeah, I actually asked you here so we could talk.” The room suddenly felt incredibly stuffy and I had to remove my jacket or I was going to faint. “Blanca, there is something strange going on between you, Carlo and Ezra and I need to know what it is. I know you and Ezra are over, and I can’t quite put my finger on what it is, but you guys were in that strange threesome thing for a while and then you chose Carlo, and now you three are best friends. It just doesn’t make sense!” I took a deep breath after realizing I was actually rambling. Blanca frowned for a moment and the waitress appeared with our food. Blanca smiled at the older woman then took a deep breath before looking at me.

“You are right. There is something, but it’s not something I can tell you. I’m sorry, Lilith.” Blanca popped a French fry into her mouth and started chewing as she shrugged. I just gaped at her.

“Well, then who can, because I can’t stand it anymore.” I picked up my jacket and was about to just walk out when I felt her gripping my wrist.

“Okay, please, Lilith, sit down.” Blanca sighed again deeply. “It’s not just my secret.” She shook her head. “I told Ezra that he needed to tell you. I knew you weren’t going to ignore things forever. Lil, Ezra is the only one who can tell you.” I nodded. At least, she had told me that much!

“Is it … Is he involved in something illegal? Blanca, you can at least tell me that much?!” I whispered, looking around to see if anyone was eavesdropping. Blanca burst out laughing and I didn’t think it was funny, but I breathed a huge sigh of relief when she shook her head.

“No, it’s nothing illegal.” She started eating her burger and the smell was so inviting that I started to pick at the French fries. “Look, I can’t say anything more, but I can promise you that it’s not illegal and to answer your next question, we aren’t a cult either.” Blanca looked amused, but I didn’t feel more at ease by any means. We finished our lunch in relative silence and she paid the bill before we left. Giving each other a quick hug, I watched as she made her way to a black SUV.

One of the boys that finished school a year before us opened her car door and I frowned. I didn’t even know that he knew her! The car drove off and I still felt lost. Okay, so at least it wasn’t illegal or cultish. I knew I could trust Blanca about that much, but she had admitted that there was a secret that Ezra had to tell me and, by the looks of things, it affected all of them.

I called his number and he answered on the first ring. We arranged to meet for dinner, which meant I needed a dress. I spent the afternoon trying to distract myself with some shopping and rushed home to get ready for our date. With Ezra, I never knew whether we would be dining at the local restaurant or getting onto a plane and going somewhere exotic!

When he arrived at my house, I was feeling positively nauseous! I was nervous and I could see the muscle in his jaw jumping when he tried to smile at me. It was clear that Blanca had told him we had talked. It was clear that I wasn’t going to let this go either, so before we reached a public place where he wouldn’t tell me again, I turned in my seat and looked at him.

“Out with it! What’s the secret?” I frowned and he sighed deeply.

“Lilith, I need you to trust me. Can you do that?” He frowned as he pulled into a dirt road I hadn’t noticed before. I realized we weren’t even anywhere near town and for a split-second wondered if he was some serial killer! Thankfully, I knew Blanca wouldn’t keep that a secret from me. She would have killed him long before we ever became something! He pulled up where the road ended and got out of the car. Running around to my side, he opened the door for me and I felt very confused. I got out and breathed in the fresh air of the forest.

“Lilith, I need to show you something, but first I need you to promise that you won’t tell anybody. Don’t scream. I promise you will be safe.” I opened my mouth to say something, but he was gone already. I heard strange noises coming from behind a tree and moments later an enormous wolf stepped out. I was on the verge of screaming when I remembered what he told me and I just gaped at the animal.

Was that actually … Ezra?! I could see it in the wolf’s eyes! Those were Ezra’s eyes! That was when it hit me! They were all werewolves! My best friend who I had staying over in my damn house was a werewolf! My brain switched off and everything around me turned dark.
