Chapter 68 Unexpected Pull
Tristan's POV
As we left Zayne's office, I couldn't stop thinking about the whole thing. A wolf with different colours was unheard of, and thinking about it, it sounded interesting and I couldn't wait to dig into it.
"What are you thinking about?” I asked Xavier, who hasn't said a word since we left the office but it was understandable.
He shrugged, running a hand through his hair. “I feel like a lot of things are happening at once." He said, “we barely get a breathing space before something new comes up…it feels like everything is going according to someone's plan.”
I paused, knowing knowing exactly what he meant. First, it was Luna's brother with a scent that couldn't be traced but he turned to be innocent and the shooters having the same tactics of untraceable smell and also trying to stop us from getting to the end of it. But at the same time, leaving clues that suggested that they wanted to be found.
"You know,” I started, after thinking for a few seconds. "I'm starting to think that we're not looking for just one group.”
Xavier paused, his brows furrowed. " What are you talking about?”
Taking a deep breath, I explained the situation with the Ravenshadow Pack, how they left a mark…one I guessed was a symbol of their group.
“A mark? Interesting." He murmured. “I'll come back to that once I find something on Luna's wolf." I nodded and watched him leave towards his own office.
“Where to start?" I wondered, getting information on Luna's mom shouldn't be that difficult. And my first instinct was to talk to her brother…even though for some reason I didn't like him, he was going to be useful.
Without wasting time, I made my way towards the room where he was staying and that didn't take long. But as I stood in front of his door, something felt off…it was the same feeling I felt a few days ago, a weird scent which caused my wolf to become restless.
“What's that?" I asked my wolf.
He shook his head, “I don't know…but whatever it is, it's driving me crazy.” His reply was immediate before he went back to pacing around.
Just as I pushed the door open, Aileen's sound came through our mindlink. "Babe!” her soft voice called. "Where are you? I've barely spent time with you all week, I missed you.”
I swallowed hard, a pang of guilt washing over me. Although I couldn't say what it was, but ever since I started perceiving the smell, I found myself pull back even though it wasn't her fault.
"Sorry." I told her, meaning it. “I'll see you once I'm done with what I'm doing."
“Okay baby, I love you." She said, and my chest tightened as I murmured that I loved her too…which I did.
I've spent years hiding how I felt about her, all I could pray about when I finally turned eighteen was that she was my mate…but when I laid eyes on her on the night of my eighteenth birthday, nothing seemed extraordinary except for the usual spark when our hand brushed each other.
It was the worst heartbreak, I remembered being so mad at the moon goddess for days but nothing changed. I was supposed to keep my distance but god help me…she was intoxicating. And finally, on her eighteenth birthday which was two years later, she found out we weren't mates and her reaction broke me.
I mean, I knew she felt the same way, but seeing her break down in my arms wasn't something I imagined.
That night wasn't supposed to happen…heck I wasn't supposed to see her as anything other than my best friend's sister but the moment my lips met hers, that thought was quickly thrown out of the window and it was easily the best night of my life. I wanted her and so did my wolf.
And by morning, I wanted her even more but the fact that I couldn't have her killed me, especially when she might find her mate soon. But several years later, I still wanted her the way I did when we were younger…which made my recent actions confusing even to me.
Closing the mindlink, I pushed the door open, the warriors bowing their heads and for some reason, the scent became stronger.
“Oh, to what do I owe this surprise?" The said person asked, a smug look that I desperately wanted to wash off his face.
“Leave." I said to the warriors before turning to him, dragging a chair to sit. His eyes followed me, but he didn't say anything.
“Here's what's going to happen," I started. “I'm going to ask some questions and you're going to answer without wasting my time."
He sat upright, crossing his arms in front of him. “Where's the fun in that? I rarely get visitors apart from Ally."
I ignored that, clearing my throat. “Tell me everything you know about your stepmother."
The smug look on his face quickly disappeared and was replaced by an annoyed one, like it struck a nerve. “Don't call her that…she's not my stepmother.”
I raised a brow, enjoying the reaction. "Technically, she is, seeing that she married your dad.” I told him, and a low escaped his lips but I just shrugged, making myself comfortable on the chair.
"Talk.”
He glared at me, "I don't know anything apart from the fact that she's a witch…not literally.” He quickly added. "She acts like she's important because she married into the Beta family and she made life unbearable for those with lower rank.”
“Sounds like someone else in this room." I murmured and his glare deepened.
“Tell me about her family…her husband.” I continued. "Are they originally from your pack?”
"Did she do something to Ally?” He asked, swearing under his breath.
I hand formed a fist, "answer the goddamn question.” I growled, running a hand through my hair. I should've opted for looking into her wolf instead of her parents so I wouldn't have had to deal with him.
He open this mouth to say something…and whatever it was, it was going to end with my fist in his face, but he changed his mind, telling me that from what he knew, they were both members of the Pack.
“Is there anything different about their wolves?"
He shook his head, “warrior Crestwood was a brown wolf…I think. Ally's mom had a gray wolf.” He replied. "Did something happen?”
"That's none of your business.” I was already standing up.
"That's not how a conversation works…you tell me what you know and I do the same. It's really not that hard."
I left before I was tempted to actually hit something on his head. But just as I got to the door, his voice came again. “When will I see you again?" I slammed the door shut.
I had barely taken two steps when the scent came again, only that this time, it was stronger, like it was right in front of me. And my wolf, who had been quiet began pacing uncontrollable and the moment he opened his mouth to talk, everything changed.
“Mate!"
