Chapter 156 An Impossible Ability
Chapter 156 An Impossible Ability
Zayne's POV
"Red!” I thought as a sharp pain shot through me. Different thoughts of what could've happened to her crossed my mind. And I prayed to the moon goddess that it was nothing like I was thinking.
"Baby, can you hear me?” I asked through our mindlink but there was no response and I felt my chest tighten.
Xavier, who was running behind me, came up to me. "Tristan is fine and so are the others." He told me but before I could let out a relieved breath, the look in his eyes told me there was more and I definitely wouldn't like it. “Luna Alyssa is taking care of things…by herself.”
"What?” I asked, "what are Jace and Tristan doing?”
"In the shield, apparently they're unable to step out of it.” He replied, "turns out only you can do that.” He added before I asked. I remembered being able to do that and I'd assumed everyone else could do the same thing.
“And if it makes you feel better, Aria says she looks hot while at it." He said, scratching the back of his head.
I resisted the urge to groan because that's true, but the pain I felt earlier begs to differ. Ignoring, I mindlinked Tristan and for the first time since Xavier told me he'd disappeared and was in danger, I was able to reach him. He gave me the direction he could remember and even before he stopped talking, I was already running.
"Please let her be okay." I begged as I ran. I wasn't sure how fast or how far I had gone but a familiar scent filled my nostrils and I let out a deep breath.
Red's scent led me to a cabin, one that was different from the last one I remembered. I didn't know what to expect but kicking the door open and seeing Red covered in blood wasn't one of them.
“Red!" I called, as she collapsed. I was beside her before her body touched the ground.
"You're here,” she smiled.
"I'm here,” I told her. "You did well, now stay awake for me.”
She shook her head, "I'm just... tired," she murmured, her eyelids growing heavier.
"I know." I forced a smile. "You can sleep later."
Her lips curved into a tiny smile as she turned towards the guys who were frozen in their spots.
"I think... I scared them."
Despite everything, a small laugh escaped me.
"You can worry about them later." I told her.
Her eyes slowly drifted around the room before settling on me again. Then her eyes closed.
Without wasting time, I carried her in my arms and dashed out of the cabin, leaving Xavier to take care of everything else. Nothing and nobody was as important as my mate and as much as I desperately wanted to rip their throats out, that could wait.
Using my wolf's speed, the race to the Pack didn't take long as I ran to the Pack hospital. The doctor immediately came to her side.
"Help her.” I pleaded, placing her on the bed and I watched as he checked her. “Is she okay? Our pup, is it fine?"
He didn't respond immediately, as he checked her pulse and then set up an IV bag. Only then did he turn to face me. “She's fine," he replied. “And so is the pup. She used a lot of her powers and needs to rest for a while."
I nodded, feeling a bit relieved even though she still hadn't opened her eyes. But I knew it was a matter of time before she did. I let out a breath I didn't realise I'd been holding and pulled a chair closer to the bed.
Taking her hand in mine, I brushed my thumb across the back of it. "You really don't know how to listen, do you?" I muttered. "I told you to stay safe."
Even though I knew she couldn't hear me, I couldn't stop talking.
"Do you have any idea how scared I was when I felt that pain?" I shook my head. "You nearly gave me a heart attack."
The door opened quietly, and Xavier stepped inside.
"Everything has been taken care of," he reported. "Viktor, Lisa and the rogues that survived have all been locked up. Tristan and the others are fine too.”
I nodded, not taking my eyes off Red, "I'll take care of them later.” I told him, then paused. "Seeing her in all that blood…” I ran a hand through my hair. "I don't think I've ever been that scared in my life."
Xavier didn't say anything for a moment. "She fought every single one of them," he finally said. “She proved she was more than capable of being Luna and that she can take care of herself…which you already know."
He was right, I know she could take care of herself, but a huge part of me still hated the thought of her in any form of danger.
"I'll leave you to it.” He told me, "I still need to deal with Luna Valerie. She's still claiming this was a setup and I doubt Alpha Dorian can listen to any of it now.”
"Neither can I.” I said, and told him he could leave.
Once he was gone, I placed a kiss on her forehead. "I can't believe I miss you even though you're right in front of me.”
I wasn't sure how long I sat there for while holding her hand. I must've dozed off at some point because when I opened my eyes, Red was staring at me, a small smile on her face.
“Hi baby!" She murmured.
I cleared my throat, “are you okay? Should I call the doctor?” I asked and she shook her head slowly.
"I'm okay, and I really don't need a doctor.” She said, "I guess I needed to rest. I feel more refreshed now." She added, but the smile, even though small, soon disappeared from her face, as her hand rested on her stomach.
“Our pup is fine." I told her.
She let out a deep breath, "I'm sorry for putting our baby in danger.” She said, "The guys were dangerous and I couldn't just watch.”
My hand caressed her face gently, "you're fine now and that's all that matters.” I told her. "You need to eat. I'll have the Omegas bring something for you to eat.
“I'm fine." She insisted, “are the guys okay though? How's Tristan's wound?”
"Red,” I called softly. "They're fine. You saved their lives and you caught the witch. Don't worry about anything else.”
She nodded, and rested her head against the pillow. But that didn't last long as I mindlinked Xavier to make sure everything was ready back in the Pack house. Red sat up straight, so fast that I was scared she'd get dizzy.
"Something strange happened.” She said suddenly.
I took a deep breath, "You can tell me about it when you're fully rested and–”
"I think I unlocked our pup's ability.” She said, interrupting me, but that didn't matter because I forgot what I was going to say.
"What?” I blinked.
She nodded slowly.
"Back at the cabin... something happened."
I stared at her, trying to make sense of what she'd just said.
Our pup's ability? I was definitely hearing things.
