Chapter 25 Dangerous Secrets
Chapter 25 Dangerous Secrets
I couldn’t understand what he meant by my father being alive till last year.
“What sort of rubbish is this?” I exclaimed, trying to get out of bed. He didn’t flinch or respond, but he looked calm and composed. Is he trying to tick me off? Was he sent by someone? Why does he look so unbothered. All my life I have been told that my father died in a crash while I was still a child.
“I’m go—going to report you to the police” I threatened, holding onto the headboard of the bed for support. My side still hurts and my face, the stings still lingered. He heaved a heavy breath and walked towards me.
“Don’t come any closer—I’ll—I’ll scream if you do!” I moved back, trying to run from the room. How on earth could he say that, “Don’t come near me” I gasped for air, my breathing unstable.
“You’re having another panic attack—please settle down” he said with perplexity, reaching out his hands towards me to extend help. I slapped them out of my face with as little strength as my body could muster.
“Miss Thompson—rest!” He ignored my warnings and pushed me onto the bed, taking out a syringe.
“Wha—what are you trying to do, get that thing and yourself away from me!” I yelled, tears trickling down my cheeks. He didn’t listen, his white coat looked like the last thing I saw before losing my consciousness once again.
“What—what happened?” I asked with a raspy voice, my throat had gone so parched from the crying, yelling and anger so much so it was hurting me. I placed my hand on my throat, scratching it, it felt itchy.
“Hello miss Thompson” I flinched. It wasn’t him. It was a lady in scrubs, a tray in her hand. “Doctor Caleb said you have a hard time trusting him—so he sent me here to check up on you” she chuckled.
Doctor Caleb—who is doct—oh, the man who looked like he was trying to kill me? The man who spilled stupid words from his lips, that Caleb.
“He tried to kill me” my voice was low and ashy.
“Kill you—miss, he’s one of the best doctors we have, not a single soul has died on his watch. I think you need to rest and have some water” she suggested, a calm smile on her face. A man who said something as totally unhinged as my father being alive right until last year is one of their best doctors. This hospital needs some check. Just as she was about to leave, I remembered why I was here in the first place.
“Miss—uh” she turned to look at me with a simple “Hmm” for her response “What about Dante—Dante Moretti?” I asked. Her demeanor changed, her smile faded and she looked at me with disdain.
“No—no, no no” I mumbled, getting out of bed. I rushed to the ICU, he wasn’t there any longer, I headed for the counter, my breath unsteady “I—I’m looking for Dante Moretti” I said with an unstable breath, holding up the counter for support.
“Miss—you need to rest, please, you don’t look so good” the nurse at the counter said, her eyes scrunched “I’ll prescribe some medicine to help you rest”
I didn’t need medicine, I wanted to know what would happen to Dante, where he was and how he was faring “I don’t need medicine—I’ve been sleeping since I got here!” I yelled, running out of the counter.
“Miss—Miss wait” I heard from behind. I didn’t listen, I couldn’t. Dante looked like he was in a bad shape before he came here—now he’s not in the ICU, where is he?
“He’s in the OR” Caleb breathed, using his arm to support me. I looked up to see his face, worry etched on it “I’ll take you to see him” he smiled. I followed right behind him, standing next to the operating room door, I watched them work on him, his back turned to them. Tears trickled down my cheeks. Why is this happening to him, to me? I crouched down next to the wall, my heart racing profusely at the thought of the worse.
“My colleagues are doing the best they can—he’ll be fine” he assured me, helping me up. We walked over to my room once again and I sat by the edge of the bed, taking a deep breath.
“What did you mean by that?” I asked. He turned to me, a clueless look on his face. How could he look so innocent, pushing his glasses deeper onto his face with his finger “What do you mean that my father was alive?” I asked again, seeing as he feigned ignorance the first time.
“I was your father’s aide—he, he loved you so very much” he started, I raised a brow at him, suspicion piqued in my heart. How is it that he is an aide but still a doctor, also I thought being an aide would mean to stand for my father wherever he could, except, my father was a doctor?
“How are you his—aide?” I asked, voicing out the questions on my mind. He walked over to the door, closing it appropriately with a slight move on the door. “I mean—you’re a doctor here and the nurse said you’re an amazing one at that, how do you tend to him while you’re here?” I asked, almostinh sounding that I had bought his sentence for the truth.
“Mister Thompson took me up when I was just a child, he raised me and funded all of my schooling. In return, I decided to be his aide, to help him in all sorts of ways that I could—that is until he passed on, he had sent me to find you Lily, to bring you back so you can see the truths” his tone was low, I could tell that there was something in his voice that conveyed his sincere thoughts.
“That doesn’t answer my question—how come I haven’t know about him until today—for twenty years, I believed him to be dead—”
“She made you believe that—your so called mother” he cut in, I scrunched my eyebrows. I know that mother had become so greedy these years but there was no way she would lie to such extent, I mean, she was once a very holy woman.
“My mother is not a liar—there’s no way she could do something of that magnitude” he looked at me, his eyes never leaving mine.
“You’re going to have to ask her yourself, I could tell you the story of how it happened but—Mister Thompson wouldn’t let me—he beckoned on me to keep it a secret” he said, his hands clasped together.
“If he asked you to keep it a secret—why are you telling me?” I asked “And why now?”
“Beca—because you’re not meant to be moving around Moretti, he’s dangerous” he explained. I didn’t care. I had seen him at his worst and at his best. I knew he was a shady man from the day I handled his accounts but it never stopped me, instead now, I’m indebted to him.
“He’s part of the mafia” I retorted in a casual tone “I know that—he has involvements with them at least, I know”
“Then why do you still move around with him?—he can cost you your life and everything you’ve ever worked for” he panicked “Look Lily, this isn’t a man you can have a happy ever after life with, he’s not who he claims to be” he added, perplexity written all over his face.
“I’ll decide who he is to me—please leave, I need my rest” I ordered. He stood there for a while, his eyes watching me, I averted his gaze but could still notice his fixation on me.
“I hope you’ve made the right decision” he heaved a sigh before walking out of the room, closing the door right behind me. Ofcourse it wasn’t the best decision but then, that’s Dante Moretti, the man who saw potential in me, the man who never forced his way into my life, he sacrificed his life for me, I wasn’t going to let go because he’s termed as dangerous, besides he’s mine, he’s all I can think about. His jet black hair, those dashing set of light green eyes. Oh how he would smirk at me if he saw me lying out here sulking for his sake. A tear ran down my cheek.
Just as I laid there, face down in my pillow, my phone buzzed. I turned to look up to the ceiling and then at my phone which laid on the table next to the bed. The caller ID read ‘Jameson’
“Hey” I mumbled quickly
“Lily—thank God, you’re okay” he squealed. I didn’t understand.
“What do you mean by that?” I asked. I was sure no one knew I was at the hospital, not even Dante’s secretary.
“I heard that Mister Moretti is badly injured and you as well—how are you both faring?” He asked cheerfully. I wouldn’t lie, I had missed our conversations, that tone of happiness, it was contagious but it left
me with a question.
“Who told you about that?”
“Denise—boss’s secretary”
