Childish
For Arnav, however, the clinical procedure was a test of sheer will. His jaw clenched as he watched another man’s gloved hands work on his wife, even under the sterile necessity of a hospital setting. A flare of possessiveness and heat rose within him, his protective instincts bristling.
“Do not take any unnecessary liberties,” he said sharply to the attending male nurse, his tone low but unmistakably threatening.
Raellyn, despite the tension of the moment, felt a laugh bubble in her chest. Seeing her husband so jealous, so adorably territorial, somehow soothed her nerves. Her lips curved in the faintest smile as she teased him in a whisper, “Arnav, you’re the one who needs to behave yourself.
“Tomorrow, I’m enrolling in medical school to become an obstetrician,” Arnav muttered under his breath, his jaw still tight.
“Don’t be ridiculous,” Raellyn replied, rolling her eyes as much as her current position allowed. “If you go to medical school, who’s going to run your agency and make money for us, hmm?”
“I can’t help it. My head is boiling,” he grumbled, leaning closer to her. “Didn’t you see them? They were looking at your private parts and putting things there. Those are mine to see, to touch, and to feel. Only mine.”
If she hadn’t been numb from the anesthesia, Raellyn would have smacked him right then and there. Her fingers twitched against his hand instead, the only outlet for her exasperation. How could he say something so utterly shameless, at a time like this, in the middle of an operating room?
“Mrs. Arnav, I’m going to insert an IV to administer antibiotics into your system,” said a young male nurse, his face flushed crimson. Poor man… he had clearly overheard a part of the couple’s private banter that was never meant for public ears.
Within moments, the final preparations were complete. Once the anesthesiologist confirmed that the lower half of Raellyn’s body was fully numb, the procedure began.
Arnav sat at her side, his hand tightly clasping hers, his thumb tracing soothing circles over her knuckles. Outwardly, he tried to remain calm for her sake, but his eyes sharp and unblinking followed every movement of the young surgeon. The doctor was steady, focused, and impressively composed.
Arnav’s chest rose and fell in a quiet rhythm as he watched the antiseptic solution glisten against Raellyn’s rounded belly. Then came the first precise motion, the scalpel making a horizontal incision just above her pubic bone, a small line that marked the beginning of the miracle they had both been waiting for.
The moment the scalpel split that tender flesh, a sharp, phantom ache tore through Arnav’s chest as if he were the one being cut open. He flinched and turned his face away, unable to watch. He couldn’t bear it. Instead, he fixed his gaze on the soft curve of her face, on the way her brows knitted in discomfort.
“After this,” he whispered, brushing a trembling kiss against her damp forehead, “we’ll finally have our complete family, my love.”
Raellyn’s eyes glimmered with both fear and hope. Her fingers tightened instinctively around his, and in that moment, Arnav felt the unspoken promise between them, a silent vow that no matter how terrifying this was, they were in it together.
Summoning his courage, he glanced past the sterile curtain again. The medical team moved with precise coordination, their gloved hands steady as they continued the delicate procedure. The scalpel had already traced a careful line along her lower abdomen. Layer by layer, they worked through skin, through soft tissue, until they reached the protective wall of the uterus.
When the doctor finally exposed the pale curve of the womb, Arnav’s breath caught. This was the sacred barrier between their world and the tiny life they had dreamed of for months. The lead surgeon gave a brief nod to the team, then began the delicate incision into the uterus, every movement calculated and efficient.
“Almost there,” the doctor murmured, his voice calm, while the monitors beeped steadily in the background.
Arnav tightened his grip on Raellyn’s hand, his heart hammering in anticipation. Every fiber of his being was focused on her. In that moment, Arnav’s chest tightened with an ache he could hardly name. He couldn’t bear it. Watching Raellyn’s belly being cut open like this made something primal inside him recoil. A cold dread crawled up his spine, and for a fleeting, shameful instant, he thought—Never again. I can’t put her through this ever again.
God, he thought desperately, how could I have asked this of her?
A vow bloomed silently in his heart: after this day, he would cherish her more fiercely than ever, honor every breath she took, and never take for granted the price she had paid to give him a child. What she was enduring for their family was madness and miracle in equal measure, a sacrifice that left him raw with love and awe.
His gaze drifted helplessly between her serene, pale face and the controlled movements of the doctors. Every careful incision was a reminder of the risk she bore for him, for the tiny life they had created.
“Arnav?” Her voice was soft, almost fragile, yet it cut through his spiraling thoughts.
He snapped his attention back to her. Raellyn’s eyes were half-lidded, but she had noticed how tightly he was clutching her hand, how often he pressed frantic kisses to her knuckles. He swallowed hard, leaning closer, his forehead almost touching hers, his voice trembling with love and fear.
Hearing his name called by Raellyn, Arnav answered with a soft smile and eyes full of warmth, as if silently telling her that everything was going to be all right.
Then, his gaze drifted back to the sacred scene before him. Every movement of the doctors imprinted itself in his mind, a memory he knew he would carry forever. They had found the baby’s head and were now carefully preparing to bring their little angel into the world.
Behind the sterile curtain, there was only the soft shuffle of instruments and the rhythmic beeping of monitors. Arnav’s entire world narrowed to the warmth of Raellyn’s hand in his and the knowledge that their child was only moments away from entering this world.
Slowly, he watched as the young doctor guided their child out of Raellyn’s womb. Barely three minutes later, the tiny life they had been waiting for finally emerged, slipping into the world with a fragile perfection that stole his breath away.
It was, without question, the greatest blessing of his entire life.
As the doctor cut the umbilical cord, Arnav pressed a reverent kiss to his wife’s damp forehead, whispering a thousand silent thank-yous into her skin. Gratitude and love surged through him so powerfully that tears spilled down his cheeks.
