Then, the sound they had been yearning for filled the room—a sharp, beautiful wail that split the sterile air and stitched their hearts together in joy.
“Congratulations,” the doctor announced, his voice bright. “It’s a healthy baby boy. Two point five kilograms, fifty-one centimeters.”
The nurse carefully wrapped the tiny newborn in a soft, white blanket before bringing him closer. The baby’s cries were already softening, as if the world outside the womb had begun to feel just a little safer.
“Would you like to hold your son, Mr. Arnav?” the nurse asked gently.
Arnav’s hands trembled as he reached out, his chest tightening with a surge of emotions he had never known before. The moment the small, warm weight settled into his arms, the world seemed to pause. His son was so impossibly small, yet so complete, with tiny fists curled as if grasping onto life itself.
He lowered his head, letting a tear fall onto the soft fabric of the blanket. “Hello, my little prince,” he whispered, his voice hoarse with awe. “Welcome to the world… my boy.”
Beside him, Raellyn watched through her haze of exhaustion and relief, her heart swelling as she witnessed the tender image of her husband cradling their child. She had never seen him like this. His usual sharpness melted away, leaving only raw, unguarded love.
The nurse suggested skin-to-skin contact, and Arnav eagerly nodded. He pressed the newborn gently against Raellyn’s chest. The baby instinctively rooted for warmth, and his cries faded into soft whimpers.
Tears slid down Raellyn’s temples as she whispered, “Hi, sweetheart… Mommy’s here.”
The three of them remained like that, hands entwined, their child nestled between them as if the world beyond the quiet room no longer existed. In that moment, every pain, every fear, every sleepless night felt worth it.
Arnav bent to kiss Raellyn again, his lips brushing her damp hair. “You’re incredible,” he murmured against her ear. “You gave me the greatest gift… I swear, I’ll spend my whole life protecting both of you.”
The baby stirred softly, letting out a small sigh, as if he had heard and accepted his father’s promise.
The cesarean section had gone smoothly, without any complications. Now, Raellyn was being wheeled into a private recovery suite, carefully monitored by the medical team. Of course, this level of attentive care was entirely the result of her husband’s influence and insistence that she receive nothing less than the best treatment.
An IV line still rested in her left arm, feeding her nutrients and fluids while she remained unable to eat or drink normally.
Arnav, with all the authority and resources at his disposal, had also requested that their newborn son remain in the same room as Raellyn. It didn’t take long to arrange, as the baby was perfectly healthy and required no further medical intervention.
“How long will it take for my wife to fully recover, doctor?” Arnav asked, his voice calm yet firm, as he stood in the office of the young physician who had delivered his child.
“Approximately four to six weeks for a complete recovery and for her to resume normal activities,” the doctor explained patiently. “I strongly advise that your wife avoid any activity that puts strain on her lower body. If you wish to discharge her, it is best to wait until the incision—”
“No,” Arnav interrupted without hesitation. “We will stay here until my wife is fully healed.”
Arnav swiftly cut off the young doctor’s words, his voice firm and resolute. In truth, a part of him wanted nothing more than to take Raellyn home immediately. The thought of his wife being surrounded mostly by male hospital staff unsettled him. Yet, he knew he couldn’t be selfish. Her safety and her complete recovery had to come first.
He couldn’t take any risks. Just watching her surgery had been agonizing enough; he couldn’t begin to imagine the pain she would have to endure during her healing process. If necessary, he would rent this hospital suite for an entire year to ensure Raellyn returned to her full strength, as radiant as ever.
With the decision made, Arnav returned to his wife’s room. Raellyn lay peacefully with her eyes closed, lost in deep, untroubled sleep. Beside her, their newborn son slept just as soundly, his tiny chest rising and falling in perfect rhythm.
Today had been the most exhausting day of Arnav’s life. His emotions had been wrung dry, stretched to the breaking point as he witnessed his wife’s struggle to bring their child into the world.
He leaned down and brushed a soft kiss against her forehead, his lips lingering as if they could convey all the love and gratitude he couldn’t put into words. His voice was a quiet whisper meant for her alone.
“How am I supposed to survive this, Raellyn?” he murmured. “You’ve tied me to you completely. I can’t imagine a life without you anymore.”
On the second day in the recovery room, Raellyn slowly drifted into consciousness. The first thing she saw was her husband, Arnav, slumped in an awkward sitting position, his head tilted slightly, using his own arm as a makeshift pillow.
Her left hand was still connected to an IV, the thin tube a reminder that her body wasn’t hers to move freely just yet. She hesitated, careful not to tug at the needle, and instead let her right hand glide instinctively to her belly and is flat now, wrapped in bandages instead of the gentle swell that had been her constant companion for months.
Ah! Her baby!
Panic flickered in her chest for the briefest moment, until her memory caught up with her heart. Of course. She had given birth yesterday. Her stomach was empty now, and her son was safe.
“Arnav?”
