Chapter 39: The Shadow That Watches
Chapter 39: The Shadow That Watches
The silence between them had just been broken by Damian's bitter confession when suddenly his phone vibrated loudly. The short ring tone was like slicing the air in the room, erasing the momentum that had nearly left both of them shattered in shared pain.
Damian turned quickly, his face instantly hardening. In that very second, the soft and vulnerable figure Vanya had briefly seen vanished, changing back into the cold and wary mafia boss.
He stared at his phone screen, cursing in Russian. "This isn't a good time," he muttered.
But the call kept repeating, and Damian finally answered it. "Yes?"
Vanya could only watch the man's jaw tighten, his voice turning low and dangerous.
"...when?" "...who saw him?" "...make sure the area is clear."
Damian hung up the phone, letting out a long sigh as if holding back a storm ready to break.
"We have to leave here," he said quickly, grabbing Vanya's hand without giving her a chance to ask.
"Why? What's wrong?" Vanya asked, trying to keep up with Damian's long strides that were almost a fast walk.
Damian didn't answer. He just pulled her toward the dark corridor leading to the living room, as if to distance Vanya from whatever was approaching them.
"Damian, please tell me, what happened?"
Damian stopped abruptly, looking at Vanya with an expression that was very difficult to read. A mixture of panic, anger, and fear.
"Vanya," he finally said, his voice low yet sharp. "I need you to be in your room. Now."
"But I need to..."
"I said stop asking questions." His gaze was piercing. "The more you try to know, the greater the danger."
Vanya suddenly froze. "Are you talking about Pablo?"
Damian moved closer, lifting Vanya's chin to make her look at him directly.
"Not just Pablo," he said. "There are many eyes watching. Many ears listening. And not all of them are on my side."
His voice sounded like both a warning and a plea.
"I can't protect you from this world, Vanya. Please, don't get involved—once you're in, escape is impossible."
That was the most honest sentence that had come out of Damian's mouth that day.
Damian then released her chin, turning his face away as if he couldn't bear to look at the wound he had caused.
"I have to go. Stay in your room until I return," he said curtly before walking away with heavy yet decisive steps.
Vanya wanted to stop him. Wanted to ask more questions. But Damian had already disappeared around the corner, leaving behind cold and quiet air.
As Vanya walked back toward her room, her body still felt shaky. She passed through the villa's main, dimly lit corridor, where the wall lights reflected a pale yellow glow on the marble floor. Her heart was beating abnormally, a mix of anxiety and a bad feeling.
As soon as she turned into her room's corridor, someone was standing there.
Elijah.
"Vanya," Elijah greeted her, his voice calm, but his eyes were not. There was something serious in them. "You finally came out."
"What's wrong? Were you... waiting for me?" Vanya frowned.
Elijah stared at her for a long time before answering. "What's happening is always worse than what Damian says."
Vanya swallowed. "Elijah... Tell me, who exactly is Pablo?"
For the first time since knowing Elijah, Vanya saw a look of fear. The right-hand man seemed to weigh his words before finally leaning against the wall.
"Pablo is not just a criminal," he said in a low but firm voice. "He controls almost a quarter of the global mafia network. Human trafficking chains, illegal laboratories, underground experiments... everything is connected to him."
Vanya frowned. "And Damian?"
"Damian? Damian is just one of hundreds of children whose future was destroyed by that project. But unlike the others... Damian endured. He rose up. He built his own power." Elijah sighed. "That made Pablo notice him."
"Elijah... does Pablo want to kill Damian?"
Elijah looked at her directly. "Pablo doesn't kill the people he wants. He breaks them first. Mentally. Emotionally. Identity-wise."
Vanya shivered.
"I just want to save Damian," she said faintly. "I know he holds hatred and revenge... but he doesn't deserve to be destroyed by Pablo. Not anymore."
Elijah closed his eyes briefly, as if the sentence made him even more anxious.
"Vanya..." Elijah took half a step closer. "If you really want to save Damian, you have to realize one thing."
"What?"
Elijah looked at her with an intensity that made Vanya almost retreat.
"Don't approach Pablo. Don't try to understand Pablo. And never, ever, believe you can handle him."
He lowered his voice. "Pablo is not human. He's a system. He's a shadow that can move around. And if he knows you care about Damian..."
Elijah stopped, looking straight into Vanya's eyes.
"...you will become Damian's easiest weakness to destroy."
Vanya hugged her arms, feeling panic slowly creeping into her bones.
"Elijah... what should I do?"
"Keep your distance," he answered without hesitation. "From Damian. From Pablo. From their past."
"But I'm already too deep," Vanya whispered.
Elijah nodded slowly. "I know."
"Then what?"
Elijah approached until only a few steps separated them.
"I will help you," he said faintly. "But not because I hate Pablo."
"Then why?"
"Because Damian... has lost too much already."
The silence stretched between them. Then Elijah added, heavier, more serious:
"And I won't let you be the next loss."
Vanya was stunned. Elijah stepped back, his body returning to the rigid posture of the professional bodyguard she had known all this time. "Go into your room. Lock the door. Whatever happens... don't come out."
Before Vanya could ask anything else, Elijah was gone. He disappeared down the corridor like a dark shadow merging with the villa.
Vanya was left standing alone. And for the first time... she truly felt that someone was watching her.
