Chapter 40: Choosing The Storm
Chapter 40: Choosing The Storm
The room was silent, accompanied only by Vanya's ragged breath whenever the shadows of the three women reappeared in her mind. She had been at Damian's house for days, confined but never mistreated. In fact, what haunted her most was not Damian... but what she had just learned.
That the disappearance of the three elite women was not purely Damian's doing.
Vanya sat on the edge of the bed. She massaged her temples with both hands, tension throbbing behind her eyes. She had gathered information—finding documents in the secret room, hearing Damian's confession, and listening to Elijah's warnings. All of it now converged. The pattern it revealed was much darker than she had imagined.
Pablo.
That name emerged like a poison every time Vanya thought of it.
Pablo. The cold-hearted man who had disguised himself as Damian's mafia ally—Damian’s so-called "business partner." Damian thought Pablo wanted only to fund projects. Yet Pablo had another ambition. He continued the insane experiments created by Damian's father. He wanted to destroy Damian from the inside.
The three missing women. Isabelle, Adele, and Katarina were not Damian's victims. The signs now felt so clear. They were invited into Damian's circle, manipulated, lured by the promise of freedom and happiness, and once they entered too deeply... they disappeared. Not into Damian's hands, but dragged away by Pablo's men to be used as leverage.
"Damian is just a pawn," Vanya murmured, her hoarse voice breaking the silence. "But why didn't he say anything? Why did he let the world think he was a monster?"
Vanya knew the answer was painful. Damian trusted no one. Including Vanya.
And part of that was the fault of Viktor, Vanya's father, who turned out to be involved in the resource research that destroyed Damian's life, as well as being the reason she was in this place.
Vanya's thoughts drifted back to Elijah's final sentence.
"Pablo is not human. He's a system. He's a shadow that can move around. And if he knows you care about Damian... you will become Damian's easiest weakness to destroy."
Vanya squeezed her eyes shut. She never expected to enter such a complicated circle of problems. And her father, it turned out, was involved long before the tragedy of the three missing women occurred.
And now Damian hated Viktor. That was the reason he kidnapped Vanya. To get revenge. Not to destroy Viktor, but to destroy Vanya.
She stood up, pacing back and forth, her fingers clutching the hem of her shirt. There was fear gripping her chest, but more than that, there was determination.
"The three women are still alive..." she whispered. "If I can find them... I can prove Damian is not the culprit."
Of course, it was crazy. She only had fragments of information, not a location. And Pablo was no ordinary enemy. He was slippery, organized, and had a wider network than anyone realized.
But she had no other choice.
She reached for the small notebook hidden beneath the mattress. There, she had written down everything she could piece together.
"If I can get out of this house..." she murmured after finishing her notes. "If only I could contact someone in the police..."
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed from the hallway. Heavy, slow, like someone contemplating something complicated. Vanya instinctively sat back down, pretending to write something when her room door opened.
Damian appeared. His dark hair was slightly messy, his black shirt half-open, and his gaze... looked tired. Not fierce. Not cold. Just empty.
"You haven't slept," he said softly.
"Of course not," Vanya quickly replied. "It's hard to sleep when I know you..."
She stopped. She couldn't show that she already knew too much.
Damian approached, sat in the chair near the window, and let out a long sigh.
"Vanya... whatever you're thinking, don't make things difficult for yourself."
"Myself?" Vanya narrowed her eyes. "Those three women are missing. And the whole world thinks it's your doing."
Damian looked at her intently. "Let the world think so."
"Why? Because Pablo is behind all this?" Vanya blurted out the question before she could stop it.
Damian fell silent. His body tensed.
"Don't interfere too much," his voice lowered, cold.
Vanya held her breath. It was too late to take back the words. But this was an opportunity, perhaps the only one she had.
"Because I know everything," Vanya said, trying to be honest yet reckless. "Pablo is using those three women as a trap for you. They are still alive. And you..." she swallowed, "you're just the victim who looks like the perpetrator."
Damian stood up slowly, his steps moving toward her. Not an aggressive step, more like the step of someone touched by a secret too heavy to keep.
"I told you, it's none of your business," he said in an almost whisper.
"Why not? Isn't that the real reason you kidnapped me? To take revenge on my father because he dragged you into that project?"
Damian's jaw tightened. But the expression in his eyes... changed. A fleeting sadness crossed them.
"Viktor destroyed my life," he said. "But Pablo... he destroyed everything far beyond what I imagined."
"You can clear your name," Vanya urged. "Together."
Damian let out a short, cynical, but bitter laugh. "Together? You don't know who you're dealing with."
"I know enough," she countered. "And I want to save those three women. They are innocent. You are too."
A long silence enveloped the room. Vanya looked at Damian. And Damian looked back at her.
Something had changed between them; the old tension cracked, replaced by the acknowledgment that they were now on the same side... albeit with different goals.
Damian finally spoke, slowly but firmly:
"If you really want to save them... and catch Pablo..."
He stepped closer, looking deep into Vanya's eyes. "...then you must be ready to face something much darker than you can imagine."
Vanya straightened her back. "I'm ready."
Damian took a long breath, as if deciding on something he had been avoiding all this time.
"Then... we start the plan," he said. "And you must obey me. Otherwise, you'll die before you get close to Pablo."
Vanya nodded fearlessly.
In her heart, she knew this was just the beginning of a great storm, and she had just chosen to stand right in the middle of it.
