Chapter 196 Evidence Left Behind from Those Years
Chapter 196 Evidence Left Behind from Those Years
As Lawrence walked over to the safe, Susan's heart skipped a beat.
She was worried that if she made it too obvious, Lawrence would catch on.
"Hey, Lawrence, I'm heading out now," Susan said casually.
"Alright," Lawrence replied, punching in the code for the safe. Susan left the office but didn't go far. She peeked through the crack in the door and saw Lawrence enter the code and place the document inside.
From her vantage point, she could see the code clearly. Memorizing it, Susan turned and left the office.
What she didn't know was that Lawrence had seen everything she did.
That evening, Kelly and Hazel had a blast shopping. Kelly drove Hazel back to Emerald Heights Estate before heading home.
Hazel opened the front door and noticed the car parked in the driveway, raising an eyebrow.
'Home early today,' she thought.
Nellie and Kaila followed Hazel, carrying the shopping bags, looking a bit worn out.
"Take these upstairs for me," Hazel instructed. Nellie and Kaila quickly took the bags upstairs. A maid came out of the kitchen, smiling as she saw Hazel.
"Where's Lawrence?" Hazel asked.
The maid pointed upstairs. "Mr. Johnson is in the study. Since you're back, Mrs. Johnson, could you call him down for dinner?"
Hazel nodded and went upstairs to the study door. She could hear voices inside and knocked twice.
The conversation inside stopped abruptly, and the door opened to reveal Jason. Hazel was momentarily surprised.
"Jason, when did you get back?" she asked.
"Not long ago," Jason replied respectfully.
Lawrence, hearing Hazel's voice, invited her in. He was sitting behind his desk, an old notebook beside his computer.
Hazel glanced at the notebook and then at Lawrence. "Dinner's ready. Let's dine."
"Okay," Lawrence nodded, giving Jason a look. Jason understood immediately and left the study.
Now alone with Lawrence, Hazel sensed he had something important to say. She glanced at the notebook again and decided to ask.
"Did you send Jason out for this?" she asked, pointing at the notebook.
Lawrence was surprised she figured it out so quickly. "How did you know?"
Hazel shrugged. "I've never seen that notebook before. Jason's been away for a couple of days, and you sent him out for this, right?"
She also remembered the investigation into Rachel's death. All the evidence was in a notebook, so it was easy for her to connect the dots.
"Do you want to see what's inside?" Lawrence pushed the notebook towards her, indicating she should open it.
Hazel hesitated briefly before picking it up and flipping through it. After a while, she closed it, her expression serious.
"How did you get this evidence?" Hazel asked, her voice trembling slightly.
The notebook detailed the times Gerald went to Elysium Psychiatric Hospital for medication, the names of the drugs, and evidence of him bribing and threatening the doctors to keep prescribing them.
"It was found at the home of a doctor who died in a fire at Elysium Psychiatric Hospital. Garth told me about it," Lawrence explained. After all these years, it seemed Garth hadn't lied.
Jason had gone to Dr. Campbell's old home and found the notebook just as Garth had described.
Hazel felt a mix of emotions. She pointed to a string of numbers on the last page. "What does this mean?"
Lawrence took a look. It was two sets of numbers, clearly an account number and a password.
He remembered Garth mentioning that Dr. Campbell had stored a recording in an account. This must be it.
Lawrence entered the account and password on the computer, and it logged in successfully. Hazel watched as he navigated the account, which contained nothing but a single recording in the drafts folder.
Lawrence clicked on it. After a moment, the computer played a recording filled with static, followed by a man's voice.
"This medication can't be given to him anymore. It'll cause serious problems!"
"Just prescribe it. Don't forget you have a family. Terrence must die. Bryan and I worked hard to get them to this point. Only if Terrence dies will he stop interfering with us."
"But he's your brother, Mr. Johnson. Don't you feel any guilt?"
"In the Johnson family, there's no such thing as brotherly love. My father favored Terrence and gave him the company. He must die."
Lawrence and Hazel immediately recognized the voice. It was Gerald.
The recording ended with the sound of a struggle. Lawrence paused the playback.
The atmosphere in the study grew tense, and Lawrence's expression darkened.
"Perfect," Lawrence said, his eyes flashing with a cold, sharp light.
All the mysteries were now solved. His parents' deaths were caused by Gerald and his accomplices. Now, with evidence in hand, Lawrence was determined to avenge his parents.
Consumed by a wave of hatred, Lawrence felt suffocated until a gentle voice brought him back to reality.
Turning, he met Hazel's worried gaze.
"Honey, are you okay?" Hazel asked, concerned. She feared Lawrence might be overwhelmed by the sudden revelations.
After a few seconds, Lawrence shook his head. "I'm fine."
"Really?" Hazel pressed.
Lawrence's expression softened. "Really, I'm fine. Don't underestimate your husband."
He playfully flicked Hazel's forehead.
Hazel fell silent. If he could still joke around, he must be okay.
She gave Lawrence a playful glare, then shut the laptop and pulled him up.
"Come on, let's eat first. We can discuss everything else later."
No matter what, dinner came first.
