Chapter 78 Chapter 78
CHAPTER SEVENTY-EIGHT
Dimitri's POV
I stormed out of Mikhail's estate with rage burning through my veins.
My fists were clenched so tight my nails drew blood from my palms.
Boris quickly gave me back my clothes. His hands were shaking.
"Thank you," I said coldly. "Now forget you ever saw me."
"Yes sir," Boris nodded frantically. "I never saw you."
I got into my car and slammed the door shut. My hands gripped the steering wheel and my mind was racing.
What now? What the hell was I supposed to do now?
I had no backup, no plan, no help.
The council was too powerful and Viktor Orlov had too many men.
I could not fight them alone. I would lose and Irina would die.
"Think Dimitri," I whispered to myself. "Think!"
I started the engine but I did not drive away yet.
Where would I even go? I did not know where they took her.
Viktor's estate? The council headquarters? Some secret location?
Moscow was huge and she could be anywhere.
My phone suddenly rang and the sound made me jump.
I pulled it out quickly. It was an unknown number.
"Hello?" I answered.
"Dimitri Volkov," a man's voice said. "This is Sergei Petrov."
Sergei Petrov, I knew that name.
He was one of the most powerful council members.
"What do you want?" I asked coldly.
"I heard about your wife," Sergei said. "About the charges against her."
"She is innocent," I said firmly. "The evidence is fake."
"I know," Sergei replied.
His words shocked me. "What?"
"I said I know," Sergei repeated. "Viktor Orlov fabricated everything."
"Then why are you not stopping this?" I demanded.
"Because I cannot," Sergei said. "Not alone. Viktor has too much support."
"Then why are you calling me?" I asked.
"Because I am offering you help," Sergei said. "But you must do something for me first."
I should have known, nothing was free in this world.
"What do you want?" I asked.
"There is a warehouse," Sergei explained. "On the east side of the city. Viktor keeps certain documents there," he continued. "Documents that prove his corruption."
"If you get those documents," Sergei said. "I can use them against him."
"What do I get in return?" I asked.
"In return I will help you save your wife," Sergei promised.
I thought about it. This could be a trap.
But what choice did I have? I was desperate.
"How do I know you are telling the truth?" I asked.
"You do not," Sergei admitted. "You just have to trust me."
Trust? What a joke. In the mafia world, trust gets you killed. But I had no other options.
"Fine," I said. "Send me the address."
"Already done," Sergei said. "Check your phone."
I looked and a message with an address appeared.
"The warehouse is heavily guarded," Sergei warned. "You will need help."
"I will handle it," I said.
"Good luck Dimitri," Sergei said.
"You have two hours, after that it will be too late."
The call ended and I stared at the address on my phone.
Two hours. That was all the time I had.
I started driving fast towards the east side of the city.
In my mind, I was working, planning, and strategizing.
I needed men but most of my guards were back at the estate.
I called my head guard, Ivan. "Gather twenty men."
"Yes boss," he replied. "Where are we going?"
I gave him the address. "Meet me there in thirty minutes."
"Understood boss."
I hung up and pressed harder on the accelerator.
The city blurred past me. People, buildings and cars.
Twenty minutes later I arrived at the warehouse.
It was huge and old.
Guards stood outside, at least ten of them, and there would definitely be more inside.
I parked down the street, hidden from view.
My phone rang again, it was my head guard.
"We are five minutes away boss," he said.
"Good," I replied. "Park two blocks south, come on foot."
"Yes boss."
I waited, watching the warehouse, and counting the guards.
This was going to be bloody, very bloody.
But I did not care, I would burn down the whole city if I had to.
Finally my men arrived. Twenty guards, all armed.
"Listen carefully," I said. "We go in fast, and hard." I paused to look at their faces. "Kill anyone who resists," I continued. "But we need those documents."
"Yes boss," they replied in unison.
We moved towards the warehouse quietly like shadows.
The guards outside did not see us coming.
We were almost at the entrance when suddenly a voice shouted.
"Intruders! We have intruders!"
Gunfire erupted immediately and bullets flew everywhere.
My men fired back and the sound was deafening.
Guards fell and blood splattered on the ground.
We pushed forward through the entrance into the warehouse.
There were more guards inside and they were waiting for us.
"Take cover!" I shouted.
We dove behind crates and machinery.
Bullets whizzed past my head.
This was worse than I thought. They were prepared.
"Boss!" One of my guards shouted. "There are too many!"
"Push forward!" I ordered. "Do not stop!"
We fought our way deeper into the warehouse.
Bodies fell on both sides. Some of my men and their men.
Blood covered the floor and the smell of gunpowder filled the air.
Finally we reached what looked like an office.
"There!" I pointed. "The documents must be in there!"
Two of my guards ran forward and they kicked down the door.
They fired bullets at them and they both fell dead.
"Damn it!" I cursed.
I ran forward myself and bullets barely missed me.
I made it to the office and inside was a safe.
"Cover me!" I shouted to my men.
They formed a line, firing at anyone who approached.
I examined the safe and it had a combination lock.
I did not have time for this so I pulled out my gun.
I shot the lock once, twice, three times.
The lock broke and the safe opened.
Inside were dozens of folders.
I grabbed them all and stuffed them into a bag.
"Got them!" I shouted. "Fall back!"
We ran towards the exit, fighting our way out. More of my men fell but we kept moving.
Finally we burst out of the warehouse.
My car was still there.
"Go!" I shouted to my remaining men. Eight of them were left. "Get out of here!"
They scattered, disappearing into the streets.
I jumped into my car and threw the bag of documents in the passenger seat.
I drove away as fast as I could.
Sirens wailed in the distance, police were coming.
But I was already gone, lost in the maze of Moscow streets.
My phone rang, it was Sergei Petrov. "Do you have them?" he asked.
"Yes," I replied. "I have the documents."
"Good," Sergei said. "Bring them to me, I will send you the location."
"What about Irina?" I demanded. "Where is she?"
"She is at Viktor's private medical facility," Sergei said. "On the north side."
"Is she alive?" I asked and my voice shook.
"For now," Sergei said. "But they are performing a procedure on her."
My blood ran cold. "What procedure?"
"They are removing the baby," Sergei said quietly.
"No!" I shouted. "No no no!"
"You still have time," Sergei said. "But you must hurry."
He gave me the address then hung up.
I turned the car around, driving north now.
My heart was pounding and my hands were shaking.
They were going to kill the baby, Alexei's baby, the baby Irina was carrying.
I pressed down on the accelerator and the e
ngine screamed.
"Hold on Irina," I whispered. "I am coming, just hold on."
But as I drove another car suddenly appeared behind me. Then another and another.
They were following me, chasing me
They must be Viktor's men. They must have tracked me.
Gunfire erupted and they were shooting at my car.
Bullets hit the back window and glass shattered.
"Damn it!" I cursed.
I swerved between lanes trying to lose them.
But they stayed close, getting closer.
One car pulled up beside me and a man leaned out the window.
He aimed a gun at me and our eyes met.
His finger pulled the trigger.
Then my windshield exploded.
