Chapter 879 Taking Care
Chapter 879 Taking Care
Isaac jumped in to calm things down, "Evan, it's your first time here, and we're all super excited. We've got a special feast just for you. Come on in and make yourself at home."
The Grey family treated Evan like royalty, even if he didn't really care for all the fuss.
Rita, usually ignored by them, got some smiles too, thanks to Evan's visit.
But Rita wasn't in the mood for their fake niceties, and Evan gave her the perfect excuse to hang out with Evelyn instead.
With everyone else out of the way, Evelyn finally felt safe enough to run into Rita's arms, hugging her tight. "Rita," she sobbed.
Rita, feeling her pain, cried too. "Evelyn, don't worry. I'm here now."
Evelyn clung to her, having never known a mother's love, Rita was like a mom to her. "I thought you left me. I was so scared," she said.
Rita gently stroked her hair and said, "Evelyn, you're the most important person to me. I'd never leave you."
Rita had said this a million times over the phone and on Facebook.
But living in such a messed-up place, Evelyn was always scared and couldn't trust any promises.
After all, Rita had once promised never to leave, but she still got sent far away to Girona.
Evelyn looked up, wiping her tears, "Rita..."
Rita comforted her, "What is it? Just tell me, don't hold back."
Evelyn asked, "Is your husband good to you?"
The word "husband" made Rita blush a bit. "We're not married yet, don't call him that."
Evelyn said, "You will be soon enough."
Rita pinched her cheek and said, "Just call him Evan from now on..."
Evan's voice came from behind them, "Why can't she call me that? I think it sounds nice."
Rita jumped, "Weren't you dealing with the family? How'd you get here?"
Evan grinned, "It wasn't hard to shake them off."
Rita knew he had his ways, and even the Smith family couldn't handle him when he was mad, let alone the Grey family, so she didn't press further.
Evan looked at young Evelyn, still so innocent, her face not fully formed, and she didn't look much like Rita. "Are you two really full sisters?" he asked.
Rita nodded, "Of course."
Evan said, "But you two don't look much alike."
"Don't look alike?" Rita couldn't stand that, quickly pulling out her phone and finding a photo of herself at around ten years old, saying, "Check this out."
Evan leaned in and asked, "What's wrong with Evelyn in this photo?"
Rita huffed, "That's me. I was about ten, just like Evelyn now."
The girl in the photo looked almost exactly like Evelyn, making it hard to tell them apart.
Evan looked closer, "You really do look like the same person."
Rita pulled out two more photos and said, "Look at these."
Evan studied the photos of two very similar girls and asked, "Is Evelyn a twin?"
Rita explained, "This one's me, and this one's Evelyn. We were both five in these pics. I had someone Photoshop us together last year. Everyone thinks we're twins when they see it. So, no more saying we don't look alike."
Evan chuckled at her determination. "Alright, I won't say it anymore."
Rita finally put her phone away, satisfied, "Smart move."
Evan suggested, "Let's go, I'll take you two out for dinner."
Evelyn looked at Rita, a bit worried, "Can we really go out for dinner?"
She wanted to, but she was also scared.
Rita held her hand and asked gently, "Do you want to go out to eat?"
Evelyn nodded eagerly, "Yes."
Rita smiled, "Then let's go, don't worry about anything."
Evelyn's face lit up, "Okay."
Rita felt a pang of heartache looking at her.
Evelyn, like Rita, had never felt love from their parents or family. Just the idea of going out to eat made her as happy as if she'd gotten the best gift ever.
Evan noticed this too. He knew their life with the Grey family wasn't great, but seeing it firsthand was something else.
Evan's driver was waiting outside.
Evan took the front passenger seat, leaving the back for them.
They had so much to talk about, chatting non-stop the whole way.
Evan listened quietly, thinking he'd do everything he could to help Rita take care of Evelyn.
Only when Evelyn was happy could Rita truly be happy.
At the restaurant, Rita kept serving Evelyn food. Evelyn ate like it was her first meal in ages, taking big bites and not wanting to stop.
It wasn't that the Grey family didn't give her good food, but they always controlled portions, worried she'd gain weight.
To keep Rita and Evelyn in shape, the family made them eat very little, which was why Rita was so thin.
But a ten-year-old, in the middle of growing, naturally ate a lot and digested quickly. Making them eat less was basically starving them.
Rita, while serving Evelyn, worried she might choke and said, "Evelyn, eat slowly. Don't overeat. I'll be here for a few days, and we'll go out to eat whatever you want."
Evelyn, still eating, replied, "I won't overeat."
Rita knew how hard it was for Evelyn and said, "Just eat slowly."
Evelyn nodded, "Okay."
Rita kept serving her food and looked up to meet Evan's complex gaze.
She smiled awkwardly, "Sorry if we're making you laugh."
Evan picked up some food for Rita. "Don't just focus on her, you need to eat too."
Rita smiled, "Okay."
Most of the dishes were seafood, especially shell-on shrimp. While Rita was busy peeling shrimp for Evelyn, Evan was peeling shrimp for Rita.
Rita said, "You don't need to worry about me, just take care of yourself."
Evan paused and then said, "I want to take care of you."
