How Much Worse Could This Get?
Cynthia halted immediately, her eyes flickering toward the door. Without being told, she leaned her forehead against the cool metal, her palms pressed against it as if drawing strength from the cold surface. Her heart pounded inside her chest, but she kept her breathing steady, waiting.
The officer walked past her, moving just a few steps down the hallway. He approached a small window with thick, reinforced glass and lifted his hand. With a single thumbs-up, he signaled to someone inside.
A heavy metallic clunk followed by the mechanical hum of gears echoed as the steel door slid open.
“Get in,” the officer ordered, his tone void of emotion.
Without hesitation, Cynthia stepped inside, her feet shuffling against the concrete floor. The room was stark, lined with white walls, a few cameras, and a large backdrop with height markers.
“Stand at the center,” another officer instructed, his voice gruff. “Don’t move.”
Cynthia did as she was told, standing stiffly as her nerves ate away at her composure. Her fingers twitched, but she curled them into fists, willing herself to remain composed.
“Look forward.”
She lifted her head, locking her gaze on the camera lens in front of her. A sudden burst of white light flooded her vision, causing her to blink rapidly. Before she could adjust, another flash blinded her again.
“Turn left.”
She hesitated only for a second before shifting her body to the left, presenting her profile. Another series of blinding flashes followed.
“Right.”
She turned again, her jaw tightening as she endured yet another assault of camera flashes. Each click of the camera felt like a stamp, marking her transition from a person to an inmate.
Footsteps approached her from behind. A different officer, a woman this time, placed a firm hand on her shoulder.
“Face the wall.”
Cynthia obeyed, turning slowly until she was facing the cold surface. She felt the officer step closer, then the sharp, metallic jingle of keys before the tight weight around her wrists was released. The cuffs slid away, leaving behind raw red marks against her skin. She exhaled slowly but dared not rub her wrists. Showing weakness would only fuel their cruelty.
The first officer stepped forward again, motioning for her to follow.
“Move.”
They exited the room, stepping back into the endless hallway. Cynthia barely had time to take a deep breath before the officer stopped her again. She looked up, her eyes settling on another door, its bold label sending a chill down her spine:
INTAKE PROCESSING ROOM.
A knock echoed against the steel, and a second later, the door creaked open.
“She’s the new intake from Sir Antonio,” the officer said, his tone laced with something unsettling. “She deserves special treatment.”
Cynthia clenched her jaw as the officer turned to her.
“They’ll take it from here.” He smirked before stepping out, the door locking firmly behind him.
Silence stretched inside the room.
Cynthia turned slowly, taking in the four female officers surrounding her. Unlike the ones before, these women had something else in their eyes. Something more. Something more than amusement mixed with cruelty. One of them, taller than the rest with a wicked grin curling her lips, took a step forward.
Their eyes met.
“What are you looking at?” the officer sneered, her voice dripping with mockery. “Haven't you seen an officer before? Or do you want me to remove those eyes of yours?.”
Cynthia remained silent, her nails digging into her palms.
The officer scoffed before her expression darkened.
“Strip.”
Cynthia’s breath caught in her throat.
“Now.” The officer folded her arms, daring her to protest. “Are you deaf?”
Cynthia swallowed hard, her pulse hammering against her skin. Her stomach twisted, but she knew resistance would only make things worse. Taking a deep breath, she reached for the hem of her shirt. Her fingers trembled slightly as she pulled it over her head, exposing her skin to the cold air.
“Faster,” one of the other officers barked, tapping her foot impatiently.
Cynthia bit her lip and continued, peeling away each layer with calculated movements. When she stood there, exposed and vulnerable, she refused to let her arms move to cover herself. They wanted to break her. She wouldn’t let them.
The lead officer tilted her head, smirking at her defiance.
“Cute.” She turned to another officer. “Scan her.”
One of the women grabbed a handheld scanner and ran it slowly across Cynthia’s body. The device beeped as it passed over her wrists, the metal residue from the cuffs still faintly detectable.
“She’s clean,” the officer reported.
"For now." The lead officer chuckled. “We’ll see how long that lasts.”
She turned back to Cynthia, nudging the pile of the standard-issue uniform on the floor with the tip of her boot.
“Put it on.”
Cynthia hesitated for only a fraction of a second before bending down, gathering the stiff fabric, and slipping it over her body. The material was scratchy against her skin, suffocating her like a second prison.
Once she was dressed, the lead officer walked up to her, their faces inches apart. Cynthia could see the amusement dancing in her eyes.
“We'll break you in no time. I promise you that,” the officer murmured, tilting her head.
Cynthia met her gaze without flinching.
“I have no doubt, you'll break me.” She replied smoothly with a smile. “I wont make it for you.”
For the first time, the officer’s smirk faltered, just slightly. A flicker of irritation crossed her face before she stepped back and clapped her hands together.
“Well, let’s see how long this smartness of yours last.”
She turned on her heel, motioning to the others.
“Take her to her new home.”
The other officers immediately grabbed Cynthia by the arms, leading her toward another door. As they pulled her forward, she kept her head high, her mind racing with only one thought:
How much worse could this get?
