Chapter 86 - The past and the present
A knock came on the door, and Sin turned to it, his brows furrowing a little.
"Come in," he said, his voice low as he straightened, his hands coming to rest on his thigh.
The door opened, and the butler that had mysteriously disappeared last night just before Sin had come. It made me smile a little, thinking of how exasperated he had been having to deal with my tantrums.
"Sir. I came to check on you and to inform you that the house has been fixed completely."
Sin nodded slowly. "And the security?"
My brows furrowed. Security? Why would we need more security?
"Yes, they have been stationed. Just... Madam Larissa is still at home."
I felt my heart sink, and I turned to Sin. His eyes hardened, and he stood up, his fist solely clenching. "What is she still doing there?"
"She said she was waiting for you. I tried to..."
Sin closed his eyes, and the butler stopped talking, his lips slipping between his teeth.
"Sin?"
He turned to me, gave a small smile, then turned away, grabbing his phone with him. My lips parted as I watched him leave, and my gaze fell on the butler who looked absolutely terrified.
"What happened?"
The butler met my eyes, and he let out a shaky breath. "Well... I am not sure of the details either."
I could sense his resistance, and I leaned forward. "Tell me."
He hesitated for a while before he sighed. "Sir's brother attacked him last night. Right before he came here."
I gasped, my hand coming to my mouth, my eyes wide. "What? Why? How?"
"Sir was only mildly injured, but... Madam Larissa came in to save Sir." He made flying quotes in the air and rolled his eyes as he said the 'save' part.
"Why?"
He gave another roll of his eyes. "He would have been perfectly fine. Enrique would never have pulled that trigger. And, the security got to the place, but they told me she stopped them from going in. Apparently, she wanted to be the one to save him."
My lips fell open as I processed that information. "In all of this, I am more interested in the fact that his own personal security let that woman have a heroic moment when Sin's life was at risk."
The butler sighed, nodding. "Yes, I know. He doesn't know they obeyed her yet, and I don't know if I should tell him."
"Of course, you should! Why shouldn't you? They risked his life!"
"Yes, they did, but I understand their decision. I have worked with him for years, before Larissa, after her. He always asked us to answer to her, no matter what. All of his security know that. They know better than to say no to her because he loved her. We know what happened when one went against her. It's hard now to pick sides."
"He employed them. He employed you!"
"But he never changed those orders. He never told me to listen to you as the current madam of the house or anything. They have a daughter together. She is essentially still the madam of the house. Yesterday was crucial, but nothing happened."
I sat back, my lips parting as I let everything he said sink in. As I understood his words, a sinking feeling of being displaced settled inside of me, causing me to feel nauseous.
I closed my eyes, my chest heaving as tears stung the back of my eyes painfully. Who was I kidding? They had a daughter whom Sin absolutely loved. Forget about Angel, who thought I only wanted to snatch her father from her, even the security wouldn't listen to me against her.
"I will take Angel with me."
I didn't reply and just sat there, my eyes closed as I let the memories run through my mind. That moment when Larissa had shown up with a gun. The way Angel had run to her mother. The way Sin had let go of my hand. The worst feeling in the world was having the illusions Sin had put in my mind shattered so suddenly, by one woman.
A knock came on the door, and I immediately turned to my right, closing my eyes as I wiped my cheeks.
"Good morning."
I sighed, trying my hardest to keep the tears away as I turned back to the doctor. I forced a smile, my eyes taking him in.
"Good morning."
He gave me a big smile. "I came to do a final check before we discharge you. Because it's Sin, we brought the papers all the way."
I bit down on my lips as I turned to the slightly open door. He wasn't anywhere. I blinked rapidly, my lips sucked between my teeth. I looked up to the doctor who was now looking at me curiously.
"Uhmm... he had to attend to something real fast. It was an emergency."
The doctor raised a brow. "What could have been more important than his wife?"
I let out a small sigh, then forced another smile. "Well... he will..."
"Doctor?"
I turned to the door, and Sin was by the door, his eyes narrow. I could see the strain in his eyes as he walked closer.
"Is my wife okay?"
I bit down on my bottom lip as the doctor's bright smile returned.
"I was scared to think you would have left without her."
"Why would I leave without her?"
The doctor chuckled as he gestured to the nurse behind him. She handed Sin a few papers, and he read through them before signing and then handing them back.
"Do let her rest a lot. She needs it."
Sin nodded, then sat on the side of the bed. "Is there anything else? To make sure nothing like this happens?"
The doctor gave a small smile. "The usual. Eating healthy, exercise, lots of water and sunshine. I believe your wife will be fine, Sin."
Sin reached for my hand, and I felt his warmth spread through me as he held my hand tight. The doctor smiled before turning away.
The door closed behind him before Sin turned back to me. I held my breath, waiting for him to tell me what had happened last night.
"Let's go home."
I nodded slowly, my eyes falling on his scars. "You are not going to treat your wound?"
"I will. I will get you home first."
I said nothing as he slowly leaned toward me, his fingers pushing my hair back. I sighed as he turned the strands of hair into the back of my hair, then caressed the sensitive skin.
I met his eyes, then let out a small sigh. "Your butler told me what happened last night."
"I would have told you myself," he said, his voice low and unwavering.
"Would you have?"
He nodded slowly, his eyes boring into me. "Why would I hide it from you?"
"Because your ex-wife saved your life. She was there for you when I couldn't be."
He blinked slowly, then leaned closer to me, his eyes tender. They felt like pools of warm water that I would gladly drown in.
"I never asked for a woman who is there for me when I am perfectly fine on my own. I want a woman for when I am vulnerable, and you have been that woman, Annalise."
I swallowed, then gently wrapped my arms around his neck. He pulled me further till I was resting on his lap, my face nuzzled in his neck.
"How does a warm bath sound?"
I nodded, sighing into his skin. "Perfect."
