Love's Anchor
Love's Anchor
Elara's POV
His voice cut through the heavenly chaos like a sword.
"Elara! Come back to me!"
I was floating somewhere between heaven and earth, my mind spread across a thousand stars. The Moon Goddess's power ran through me like liquid fire, trying to wash away everything that made me human. But that voice... I knew that voice.
Alaric.
Through the brilliant silver light that had become my world, I felt something tugging at my heart. Not the goddess magic or the heavenly energy. Something warm and real and completely mine.
Our mate bond.
"I can't," I whispered, my voice echoing weirdly in the divine space. "I'm losing myself."
But he didn't give up. He never gave up on me.
"Remember our first dance," his voice called from what felt like a million miles away. "You stepped on my feet three times, and I told you it was perfect."
A tiny spark of warmth flickered in my chest. I could almost feel his hands holding mine, patient and gentle even when I was clumsy.
The goddess power hissed around me, trying to snuff out that small light of memory. It whispered that human love was weak. That I was meant for bigger things than caring about one man.
But the mate bond pulled harder.
"Remember when you cried watching that sad movie," Alaric continued, his voice getting clearer. "And I held you until you fell asleep, even though my arm went numb."
Another spark. This one bigger.
I could see his face now through the divine light. Silver eyes full of love and fear, watching me disappear into something he couldn't follow.
"I'm scared," I admitted, feeling more human just from saying those words.
"I know," he said softly. "But you're the greatest person I've ever known. You can fight this."
That's when I noticed something terrible happening below.
Aurora and the Dark Coven were surrounding everyone I loved. Ember was barely holding her protection spell together, blood running down her face. My mother was turning into something dark and horrible. And Alaric... Alaric was standing right in the way of creatures that could tear him apart.
"No!" I screamed, trying to break free from the goddess power. "Don't hurt him!"
But the divine energy held me tight like chains made of stars.
"He's just a mortal," the Moon Goddess whispered in my mind. "Why do you cling to something so small when you could have everything?"
"Because he's not small to me!" I shouted back. "He's everything!"
The mate bond flared brighter, and suddenly I could feel Alaric's feelings as clearly as my own. His love wrapped around me like a warm blanket, pulling my scattered mind back together piece by piece.
I remembered the way he looked at me the first time we met. Not like I was broken or worthless, but like I was special.
I remembered how he taught me to be strong without losing my kindness.
I remembered the night he told me I was already a queen, I just needed to see it for myself.
"I choose love over power," I whispered, and felt the goddess magic flinch in shock.
"You cannot!" the divine voice thundered. "You are picked! You have a fate!"
"My destiny is my own," I said firmly, grabbing onto the mate bond with both hands. "And I choose him."
The silver light around me started to crack like breaking glass. Through those cracks, I could see the real world again. The fight. The danger. The people who needed me.
But as I began my fall back to humanity, something went horribly wrong.
Marcus Blackthorn raised his staff, and dark energy shot toward Alaric like a spear.
"No!" I screamed, pouring all my power into breaking free faster.
But I was too far away. Too caught up in divine energy to move fast enough.
The dark magic was going to hit him, and I couldn't stop it.
That's when Aurora did something nobody expected.
She threw herself in front of the attack.
The dark energy meant for Alaric slammed into her instead. She screamed as it tore through her body, her cold stars flickering like a dying candle.
"Sister!" I cried out, finally breaking free from the goddess power and dropping toward the ground.
Aurora looked up at me with eyes that were no longer totally black. For the first time since she'd appeared, she looked scared and young and human.
"I remember now," she gasped, dark blood spilling from her mouth. "I remember loving you when we were kids. Before the darkness took me."
My feet hit the ground hard, and I ran toward her. But Marcus was faster.
"Foolish girl," he growled, raising his staff again. "You were supposed to destroy her, not save her!"
He blasted Aurora with another wave of dark magic. This one was meant to kill.
"Stop!" I threw my hands up, letting loose every bit of power I had left.
Golden light exploded from my hands, meeting his dark magic in the air between us. Where the two forces met, the air itself caught fire.
But I was still weak from fighting the goddess change. My power flickered and started to fail.
Marcus smiled coldly. "Goodbye, daughters."
Just as his killing blow was about to break through my shield, something impossible happened.
The mate link that connected me to Alaric suddenly stretched wider. I felt it stretching out like a golden chain, wrapping around every person I loved.
Ember. My mother. Even Aurora.
And through those ties, their power flowed into me.
Not divine power or cosmic energy. Something better.
The power of people who cared about each other.
My golden light burned brighter, pushing back Marcus's attack. For a moment, I thought we might actually win.
But then Aurora grabbed my hand with fingers that were already turning to shadow.
"Elara," she whispered quickly, "there's something you need to know about the Void. It's not just trying to attack our world."
Her grip tightened as her body began to disappear.
"It's running from something. Something that's been hunting it across multiple dimensions. And now that the doorway is open..."
Her voice faded to nothing as she turned to dust in my arms.
Behind us, the cracks in reality suddenly stopped growing.
Instead, they began to pulse with a different kind of light. Not dark like the Void, and not silver like divine power.
This light was red. The color of fresh blood.
And through those cracks, I could hear something booming. Something ancient and hungry and absolutely angry.
Marcus's face went white with fear.
"Oh no," he breathed. "It followed them here."
