The Witch's Gambit

The Witch's Gambit
Ember's POV

My hands burst into fire the second I started casting.
"No!" I screamed, throwing every ounce of magic I had toward the burning figure that used to be my best friend. "I won't let you disappear!"
The heavenly power around Elara hit my spell like a hammer. Pain shot through my entire body as the goddess magic tried to burn me alive from the inside out. My skin felt like it was melting off my bones.
But I didn't let go.
"Elara Stone, you listen to me right now!" I shouted through gritted teeth, weaving my protection spell tighter. "You're not some fancy lady tool! You're the girl who helped me escape my crazy father!"
Above me, all the stars had gone out when Seraphina said those scary words. Now everything was pitch black except for the silver light pouring out of Elara and the cold starlight radiating from that evil twin Aurora.
The Void thing was still trying to push through the cracks in reality, its tentacles reaching for both sisters. But my spell was creating a small bubble of safety around the last bit of Elara's human soul.
"Fight it!" I yelled, feeling my magic getting weaker. "Remember who you are!"
That's when Aurora turned those terrible black eyes on me.
"How cute," she said in a voice like broken glass. "The little witch thinks she can play with gods."
Dark power slammed into my defense spell. I screamed as it felt like lightning was running through my blood. But I held on because Elara needed me.
"You don't understand," I gasped, blood running from my nose. "She saved me first. Now it's my turn to save her."
I pushed deeper into my memory, sending it straight into Elara's fading awareness.
The night my father found me practicing light magic instead of his dark spells. How he'd beaten me until I couldn't stand. How Elara had found me crying in the bush and taken me home without asking any questions.
"Remember?" I whispered, my voice getting weaker. "You didn't care that I was the Dark Coven leader's daughter. You just saw someone who needed help."
For just a second, the cold silver light around Elara flickered warmer.
But then something terrible happened.
The mark on Seraphina's wrist started glowing with black light. She was floating now, her body changing in ways that made my stomach sick. Her eyes were turning the same terrible black as Aurora's.
"The blood price is accepted," the Void spoke through her mouth. "One Luna Priestess family for the debt. But we choose which one dies."
"Mom?" Elara's voice cracked through the holy light. She sounded scared and small, like a little kid.
"No!" I screamed, pouring more power into my spell. "I won't let you take any of them!"
That's when I realized something that made my blood freeze.
My father hadn't just taught me dark magic. He'd also taught me about blood debts and ancient deals. And I knew something about the Void that nobody else did.
It could only take what was freely given.
Seraphina hadn't just promised the Void a Luna Priestess. She'd promised herself as security. If she couldn't give what was owed, the Void would take her instead.
But there was a way.
"Aurora!" I called out, my voice shaking. "You want to hurt your family so bad? Then listen to this!"
The evil twin turned toward me, her face twisted with rage.
"The Void didn't just make a deal with your mother," I continued, fighting through the pain as her power tried to crush my spell. "It made a deal with your father too!"
Everyone froze. Even the tentacles of darkness stopped moving.
"That's impossible," Aurora growled. "My father is dead!"
"Is he?" I smiled even though it felt like my face was on fire. "Because last I checked, my father Marcus Blackthorn is very much alive. And guess what? He's been working with the Void for twenty years, waiting for this exact moment!"
The look of shock on Aurora's face would have been funny if everything wasn't so scary.
"Marcus isn't just the Dark Coven leader," I pressed on, using the confusion to increase my protection around Elara. "He's also the Shadow King. The one who's been giving information to the Void about both Luna Priestess twins since they were born."
Seraphina's black eyes widened in fear. "No. Marcus said he loved me. He said—" "He lied!" I shouted. "He used you to make the perfect weapons for the Void! Two Luna Priestesses who would destroy each other and open the way for evil to take over everything!"
That's when the real news hit me.
If my father was the Shadow King, and he'd been planning this for twenty years, then that meant...
"Oh no," I whispered, the truth hitting me like a punch to the gut. "Aurora isn't just Elara's twin. She's my sister too."
The dark twin's face went white. "What did you say?"
"Marcus Blackthorn is our father," I said, my voice barely audible. "He seduced your mother while she was married to make the perfect Luna Priestess bloodline. Then he took you when you were meant to be stillborn and raised you in the Void to be his weapon."
Aurora screamed, and the sound made reality crack even more.
But the worst part was yet to come.
"Which means," I continued, my heart breaking as I understood the truth, "this whole thing was a setup. The refusal, the rescue, everything. He's been playing all of us from the beginning."
That's when a slow clap echoed through the darkness.
"Very good, my dear daughter."
My father stepped out of the darkness, but he didn't look human anymore. His skin was like living black, and his eyes were pits of nothing.
"I was wondering when you'd figure it out," he said with that smile I used to think meant he was proud of me. "Though I must say, you're a bit late to the party."
Behind him, dozens of other forms emerged from the dark. Witches, warlocks, and things that had never been human at all. The full Dark Coven, plus their allies from the Void.
"You see," he continued, walking toward us like he had all the time in the world, "I needed Luna Priestess power to open a permanent doorway between worlds. But one woman wasn't enough. I needed two, fighting each other, pulling reality apart with their opposing forces."
He gestured to where Elara and Aurora were still locked in their fight of light and shadow.
"And thanks to all of you playing your parts so beautifully, the doorway is almost complete."
That's when I noticed something that made my heart stop.
The cracks in reality weren't just letting the Void through anymore. They were growing, getting bigger, reaching toward the ground where we stood.
"In about thirty seconds," my father said happily, "this entire world will be consumed by the Void. Everyone you've ever loved will become food for monsters that shouldn't exist."
He looked directly at me with those empty black eyes.
"Unless, of course, you'd like to make a deal."
