Chapter 50 THE MEMORY OF LIVES BEFORE

Chapter 50 THE MEMORY OF LIVES BEFORE
Ella closed her eyes, steadying her breath. “I don’t care.”

Kael exhaled shakily. “I know.”

He knelt, placing his palms flat to the earth as the sigils erupted around her in spiraling white-gold fire. “When the ritual begins, I must tether your soul using ancient runes forbidden to the Order. If anyone discovers what I’ve done—”

“They won’t,” Ella whispered.

Kael lifted his gaze to her. “Ella… even with my help, the moment your consciousness leaves your body, the Unmade will attack. And the Echo will try to trap you. You must fight both.”

Ella nodded once. “I will.”

Kael hesitated, then said softly:

“You love him.”

Ella’s breath trembled. “Yes.”

Kael nodded, tightening his jaw. “Then hold that love at the center of your soul. It may be the only thing the Echo cannot overwrite.”

Ella closed her eyes.

And the ritual began.

Kael whispered words older than kingdoms, older than the forest around them. The runes beneath Ella blazed to life, spinning in a spiral that circled her ankles, then her waist, then her chest.

Ella gasped as a force tore upward inside her —
pulling,
twisting,
lifting her soul as if plucking a thread from cloth.

Her vision fractured.

Her breath vanished.

Her body fell away.

And her soul rose.

—

In the Echo’s realm

Raine wandered through a collapsing landscape of memories. Shards of faded images floated through the air — pieces of a past he didn’t remember, fragments of a life that wasn’t his.

Trees made of glass.
A river that flowed backward.
A sky with no sun.

He pressed his fingers to his temples.

“Ella…” he whispered. “Where… where are you? Don’t… forget me…”

His own name flickered.
A dozen memories shattered.
His breath thinned.

Then—

A light appeared.

Soft at first.
Gentle.
Far away.

A silhouette.

A figure.

He knew that shape —
that glow —
that presence.

“Ella…?”

He stumbled forward.

The figure appeared for only a heartbeat—
just long enough for him to see her—
glowing faintly, hands reaching—

Then she flickered out.

Raine dropped to his knees.

“Ella, please—please come back—”

—

Between the realms

Ella drifted again through the void —
but this time she could see threads connecting every direction.
Threads of memory, of time, of souls.
Threads of grief.
Threads of longing.

And one thread —
thin, trembling, silver-black —
connected to a distant point.

Raine.

She reached for it—

But a cold presence slid behind her.

The Second Echo.

Its voice brushed her ear like a ghost.

You should not have come, Vessel.
This realm was not made for the living.

Ella turned.

The Echo’s form was clearer now —
a silhouette with faint features carved from shimmering shadow —
like a person half-remembered in a dream.

“Give him back,” Ella whispered. “Let him go.”

The Echo tilted its head, studying her.

He was mine
long before he was yours.

Ella clenched her fists. “He isn’t your Mirror.”

The Echo’s voice softened, almost tender.

He was.
He is.
He will always be.

Ella shook her head. “You’re wrong.”

The Echo drifted closer.

Little Vessel…
you do not know what he was.
What he is.
What has been taken from him.

Ella’s breath caught. “What are you talking about?”

A shard of light floated between them —
a memory fragment —
a piece of the past.

The Echo touched it—

And the world around Ella erupted into a vision.

—

A cliff beneath a violet sky.

Two figures standing hand in hand.

One glowing silver-white.
One shadowed in luminous black.

Ella recognized the merging.

But then the shadowed figure turned slightly—

And Ella gasped.

The profile—
the shape—
the aura—

It was Raine.

Not him.
Not exactly.

But close enough that Ella’s soul trembled in recognition.

The Echo whispered:

When the first merging shattered…
the Mirror-soul reincarnated.
Again and again.
Each life forgetting.
Each life searching.

Ella’s knees nearly buckled.

“No… no, that’s not possible—”

Your Raine is the last incarnation
of the Mirror I once belonged to.
He is the one I broke for.
He is the one I waited for.

Ella’s breath fractured.

The Echo floated closer.

He is mine.

“No!” Ella screamed, light bursting from her palms. “HE’S NOT!”

The Echo’s form flickered violently, the realm shaking.

Ella grabbed the merging-thread —
the one that led to Raine —
and pulled.

The world around her rippled.

The Echo hissed.

If you take him…
if you break the cycle…
this realm will collapse.
The Unmade will rise.
And the world you know will fall.

Ella’s tears streamed down her face.

“I don’t care.”

The Echo moved like lightning.

Then you choose war, Vessel.
And war will answer.

The realm cracked open—

Ella and the Echo were flung apart—

Raine screamed her name—

And Ella was thrown back toward her body, soul burning, heart breaking.
