Chapter 49 WHERE THE VOW IS BORN
Chapter 49 WHERE THE VOW IS BORN
They were shining, two bright white flames haloed with shifting silver and shadow.
Kael recoiled in shock. “Gods… Ella—your soul didn’t return cleanly—half of you is still—”
Ella gasped sharply, clutching her chest.
“I know. I feel it.”
Her voice echoed unnaturally, layered like a whisper behind a whisper.
Kael leaned over her, panic rising in his voice. “Ellla—focus—where is it anchored? Your soul-thread—where is it caught?”
Ella squeezed her eyes shut, searching inside herself—
feeling the tug,
feeling the emptiness,
feeling the thread stretching across realms like a thin bridge ready to snap.
Her breath trembled.
“It’s him,” she whispered.
Kael’s jaw tightened. “Ella—”
“The thread is caught on Raine.”
Kael looked away, grief twisting his expression. “That means he’s still alive. But it also means if he fades… he’ll drag you with him.”
Ella shook her head, forcing herself upright even though her limbs trembled violently. “Then I have to reach him before he disappears.”
Kael grabbed her wrists sharply.
“You can’t go back yet!”
Ella glared at him, light flickering dangerously in her eyes. “Let go.”
“Ella—listen—your soul is unstable. You dive back into the Echo’s realm now and you will not come back.”
“I don’t care.”
Kael slammed his palm into the ground beside her. “I DO!”
Ella stared at him—
shocked.
Moved.
But resolute.
Kael’s breaths came fast, frantic. “I cannot lose you both. Ella—if you fall, the Unmade gets everything it wants. It will consume what remains of you—and Raine—and the entire merging. This world will not survive it.”
Ella’s voice dropped—soft and deadly.
“Then teach me what I need to know. Fast.”
Kael’s eyes darkened. “Ella… this isn’t something you learn. It’s something you survive.”
Ella pushed herself onto her knees, trembling. “Then I’ll survive it.”
“Ella—”
She lifted her head.
Her eyes softened—broken—full of devotion.
“Kael… I heard him. I saw him. He’s losing himself. I can’t sit here and watch him disappear.”
Kael swallowed hard. “What… what did he remember?”
Ella lowered her gaze, a tear slipping down her cheek.
“My name.”
Kael’s breath caught. “That means he’s on the edge. Ella… once he forgets your name, the Echo will reshape him. He won’t know who he is anymore. He won’t know you. He won’t know anything.”
Ella pressed a hand over her heart as if holding herself together.
“Then I have to reach him before that happens.”
Kael dug his fingers into his hair. “I don’t know how to stabilize you fast enough—I—I need more time—we need—”
A cold wind sliced through the clearing.
Ella froze.
Kael spun.
And a voice whispered into the back of Ella’s skull—
He slips further.
Every breath you waste
feeds the Echo.
Ella staggered.
“No…”
The Unmade hissed with hunger and satisfaction.
You cannot save him.
But I can.
Give yourself to me…
and I will return what is lost.
Ella’s magic convulsed violently. She cried out, falling to her hands as shadows curled around her wrists like venomous snakes.
Kael lunged to her side. “Ella—ELL A—fight it—DON’T LET IT IN—”
“I—I’m trying—” she gasped, sweat dripping down her temples. “It’s—it’s too strong—”
The Unmade slid deeper.
You cannot reach him.
You cannot hold him.
You are weak.
He is mine.
“STOP!” she screamed.
Her magic exploded in a burst of silver light that shook the trees, sending Kael backward.
Ella curled into herself, trembling violently, breath fractured and shallow.
And then—
just when she thought she would shatter—
a whisper brushed her ears.
Soft.
Weak.
Barely there.
Ella…?
Her head snapped up.
Raine.
He wasn’t here—
not physically—
but through the fraying thread of the merging, she felt him like a fading ember.
“Raine? RAIN E! Can you hear me?”
A pause.
A fragile breath.
Don’t… forget… me…
Ella broke.
Completely.
She pressed her fists to the earth and screamed, her voice shaking with grief and fury:
“I WON’T! I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU!”
Light ripped through the clearing in a shockwave so powerful it sent leaves spinning skyward and split a nearby tree clean in half.
Kael shielded his face, staring at her with awe.
Ella rose to her feet—
shaking,
glowing,
half-torn between two worlds.
She lifted her chin.
And whispered a vow that made the forest bow to her voice.
“I will go into the Echo’s realm. I will find you. I will bring you home.”
She stepped out of the ritual circle.
Kael grabbed her arm. “Ella—you can’t—”
She turned, her expression soft but unbreakable.
“I am going to get him back.”
Kael’s voice cracked. “Even if it kills you?”
Ella nodded once.
“Even if it kills me.”
Ella stood in the center of a second sigil-circle Kael had carved — larger, sharper, glowing brighter than the first. The ground vibrated beneath her feet as magic hummed through the air like a living thing. She felt her soul pulling already, straining to slip free of her skin.
Kael hovered at the edge of the circle, panic and determination warring in his expression.
“This ritual,” he said quietly, “has not been performed in over two hundred years. It’s forbidden for a reason.”
