Chapter 48 THE SOUL THAT LEAVES THE BODY

Chapter 48 THE SOUL THAT LEAVES THE BODY
Kael knelt and touched the center of the circle. “This ritual forces your consciousness to detach from your body. It will feel like falling… like drowning… like dying. You must ignore it. You must hold to the one thing that anchors you.”

Ella swallowed. “Raine.”

Kael looked up at her, sorrow in his eyes. “Hold him so tightly that nothing—not the Echo, not the Unmade—can pry him from you.”

Ella stepped into the circle.

Her pulse raced.

Her palms tingled.

Her magic rose beneath her skin in a trembling hum.

Kael stood outside the sigils, hands hovering. “I will guard your body. But Ella—if the Unmade breaks in while you are gone—”

“You stop it,” she whispered. “You protect me until I return.”

Kael closed his eyes. “I will.”

Ella lowered herself into a kneeling position, hands resting on her thighs. The air around her shifted, turning sharp, cold, electric. The sigils flared in response.

Kael exhaled. “Are you ready?”

Ella closed her eyes.

“I am.”

Kael touched the outer circle.

Light erupted.

Ella gasped as a violent surge ripped through her body—pulling, twisting, tearing at her soul like invisible hands were prying her away from the world.

Her breath broke.

Her vision melted.

Her heartbeat slowed.

“Ella!” Kael shouted. “Stay with me—stay with me—do NOT let go—”

Ella felt her body fade—
skin dissolving,
bones evaporating,
breath slipping from her lungs.

Her soul woke.

A scream tore from her throat as light swallowed her whole—

—

And then—

There was nothing.

No ground.
No sky.
No body.

Just weightless drifting.

Ella reached out, but her hands were made of light. She lifted her face—no breath, no warmth, only consciousness.

“Raine?” Her voice sounded like echoing wind. “Raine, can you hear me?”

Silence answered.

Ella fought panic. She gathered the last remnants of her magic and whispered—

“Raine. Please.”

A tremor rippled through the void.

The darkness peeled open—

—

In the Echo’s realm

Raine staggered through a shattered memory-forest, branches twisting like broken arms. The ground beneath him flickered between solid and smoke. His own footsteps made no sound.

He clutched at his chest.

“A name…” he whispered. “I keep… forgetting… everything but… a name…”

He pressed his forehead against a tree that wasn’t a tree.

“Ella.”

The tree shuddered.

A crack spread across the sky.

A thin seam of silver-light tore open.

Raine lifted his head.

“Ella…?”

—

In the space-between-realms

Ella felt something pull her forward—
not violently,
but with aching familiarity.

She followed the pull.

The void parted.

A faint silhouette appeared.

Silver light.
Black undertones.
A figure she knew better than her own heartbeat.

Ella’s breath seized.

“Raine?”

The silhouette turned.

And she saw him—

Faint.
Half-shadow.
Half-light.
Eyes glowing with desperate astonishment.

“Ella…” His voice trembled. “Is it—you?”

She ran toward him.

He reached for her.

Their hands passed through one another like fog.

“No—NO—” she cried, trying again, trying harder, trying to force her fingers into solidity—

Raine pressed forward, trying to hold her. “Ella—I—I can’t touch you—why can’t I—?”

Ella sobbed. “Raine—I’m not fully here—I don’t have my body—I had to leave it—I had to find you—”

Raine’s breath shook violently. “Ella… I’m losing myself. Everything is… slipping. Except you.”

Ella cupped his face, even though her hands passed through his skin like light. “Then hold on to me. I’m here. I’m not letting go.”

Raine leaned into her palm, even though he couldn’t feel it. “Ella—please—don’t leave me—please—”

Ella choked. “I won’t. I won’t—”

But the realm shuddered violently.

A pulse of cold tore through the air.

Raine grabbed his head, crying out. “No—NO—something’s pulling—I can’t—”

Ella lunged toward him.

“RAINE!”

A voice slid through the realm—

He does not belong
to the living.

The Second Echo stepped from the shadows behind him—
taller, clearer now,
silver-shadow forming faint features,
eyes glowing like dying stars.

Ella froze.

The Echo looked directly at her.

For the first time.

Little Vessel…
you should not be here.

The realm cracked around her.

Ella screamed—

Raine reached for her—

The Echo pulled him back—

And Ella was violently torn away from the plane, sucked backward into darkness as Raine’s scream echoed after her—

ELLA—!!!

—

Back in the real world—

Ella’s body arched, light exploding from her chest.

Kael staggered back in terror.

“ELLA—STOP—YOU’RE TEARING YOUR SOUL—”

Ella’s eyes snapped open.

They glowed pure white.

She whispered only one word—

“Raine.”

And the world shuddered.
Ella slammed back into her body with a violent jolt.

Her spine arched off the ground, a scream ripping out of her as light exploded from her chest—silver, white, black—dancing like lightning against the dark bruised sky.

“Ella—E L L A—!”
Kael grabbed her shoulders, trying to hold her still as the merging spun out of control.

Her eyes snapped open.

They were not merely glowing.
