Littele brother 90
Although it was daytime, the room remained dim with the doors and windows closed. Several candles were lit for illumination. Inside, the room echoed with the sounds of painful groans, causing Jose, pacing outside, to feel increasingly uneasy. He had skipped meals from noon until now. The sounds from inside were getting weaker, and as Jose watched the servants pour out basin after basin of blood water, his heart clenched.
However, more anxious than Jose was Selena. Originally, her mother still had half a month before giving birth. Her health had been good, but unexpectedly, she went into labor prematurely. The newly prepared home was not ready for occupancy, so they had to make do with delivering the baby here. Due to the lack of preparation, the room had to be hastily cleaned. Probably due to the shock, her mother's condition was not good. Holding her hand, Selena could see it turning pale.
Thankfully, Jose had arranged for three midwives in advance. Two of them were older and experienced. Initially, everything went smoothly, and her mother was able to exert herself. However, when the birth canal opened and the baby's head appeared, it was discovered that the position was somewhat abnormal, causing a delay in delivery.
This situation was the most dangerous; prolonged delay could lead to grave consequences. Seeing that even the three midwives were panicking as the baby wouldn't come out, and witnessing Maria becoming increasingly weak and sweaty, with strands of hair sticking to her face, devoid of the strength she had when she was screaming earlier, even her grip on Selena's hand had weakened by half, Selena couldn't help but feel anxious and uneasy.
Selena could only watch the two midwives leaning between the mother’s legs, waiting for the baby to crown, while the other midwife pressed down hard on Maria's abdomen. Maria's reactions were no longer as painful as before; she only groaned a few times and seemed somewhat disoriented, unable to exert much force. All three midwives were sweating profusely, and the baby's head had yet to emerge. Continuing like this would be disastrous.
"Maria is experiencing dystocia. We can only save one, otherwise they'll both be lost if we wait any longer," the experienced midwife who was pushing on her abdomen wiped the sweat from her face and spoke.
Outside, Jose had received the news but hesitated to make a decision. Selena didn't know what her father looked like at that moment, but she was certain he was in agony over the decision. Maria was over thirty now, and missing this opportunity meant there would be no chance for another child. Without a son, there would be no heir. What was once a hopeful situation now seemed hopeless. Without experiencing it firsthand, who could make a rational decision?
"Madam is fading. We need to act quickly..."
Selena wiped away her tears and steadied herself. Though she had never given birth herself, she understood the situation. Giving birth was like passing through the gates of hell. With this realization, she composed herself and turned to the midwives.
"If you can save both the mother and the child, I'll double the reward for you..."
"Well, that's impossible. Madam might still have some strength left, but now..."
"Is there any raspberry tea? Quickly, go get some raspberry tea," one of the midwives interrupted.
"Yep!" After bringing a small bowl, Selena hurriedly poured a few drops of the miraculous water into it. She hadn't expected her mother to have a sudden emergency, and everything was unprepared. With no time to soak the tea properly, she simply placed a raspberry leaf soaked with the miraculous water into Maria's mouth.
At that moment, a servant came in saying the master wanted to save María's life, but Selena just waved her hand to make them leave. Then, she approached María and shouted in her ear, "Mom, please wake up! The baby is about to be born. Dad and you have waited so long for a son. You just need one last push, and he can come out immediately..."
Perhaps it was the mention of the son that revived María a bit, or maybe it was the raspberry tea, but suddenly she struggled to open her eyes. María was in a sorry state, with a pale face covered in sweat, but at that moment, she didn't care about her appearance. She grabbed Selena's hand hopefully and said, "Selena, is it your little brother?"
Selena had mentioned that the baby was about to be born, but she couldn't confirm if it was a boy or a girl. However, María was clinging to any hope. Selena squeezed María's hand tightly and replied, "Yes, Mom. Your little brother is still inside you and wants to come out. You need to make one more effort so he doesn't suffer anymore and so Dad can hold him soon..."
With a gleam in her eyes, María began to exert herself. The baby was inside her, and she couldn't let him suffer.
"Oh, madam, just a little more effort, the baby's head is coming out. Just a little more and you'll see his little arms and hands..." The two midwives couldn't help but echo Selena's words. Indeed, María began to exert herself desperately. Perhaps it was the effect of the raspberry tea, aiding the contractions. María let out a desperate cry as if her strength had been drained, and she lay there exhausted, only audible breaths escaping her lips.
At this point, María had no energy left to speak, but her eyes were fixed on her daughter. Selena understood her mother's thoughts and quickly lifted the blanket. When she saw the little bundle, tears welled up in her eyes. Sitting beside her mother, Selena trembled with excitement, tears streaming down her face as she said, "Mother, congratulations. You've given birth to a little brother..."
Finally, María could relax and drifted off to sleep.
Upon hearing the news, José, holding the tiny baby in his hands, cried like a child, despite being a thirty-five-year-old father.
Selena was also exhausted. After ensuring her mother was fine, she returned to the mansion and slept for half a day and night before regaining her spirits.
For the past two days, she had been coming and going, taking care of her little brother. Selena adored the baby and couldn't help but marvel at him sleeping peacefully beside their mother, observing his every move with fascination.
Seeing her mistress so attached to the baby, Mariana couldn't help but tease her on the way back home, saying, "Miss, you adore children so much. Why not have one of your own?"
Selena paused with the ivory comb in her hand and then glared at Mariana, saying, "You, girl, are getting bolder, even joking with me. Are you perhaps also wishing for me to find you a husband so you can have your own child?"
Mariana, seeing Selena's reaction, quickly pleaded for forgiveness, saying, "I won't dare again. Mariana is willing to serve by your side forever."
As she thought about it, she reached for her own flat stomach. Despite witnessing the pain of childbirth from her mother, she felt a growing desire within her. Although she feared the pain, the anticipation of having her own child was indescribable. No one desired a child of their own more than she did. So, if given the choice, she would still bravely and without hesitation pursue it. She just didn't know when it would happen for her.
