Chapter 193 Being with Two Women at the Same Time
After Scarlett finished speaking, Ambrose's eyes instantly darkened, followed by a surge of hostility.
She felt a bit panicked. When he lost his temper, she could barely handle it. She stammered out an explanation.
"We agreed from the start that I'd help you secure the art museum project. Now the museum has broken ground, so I've fulfilled my promise."
Ambrose let out a cold laugh. Everything she did, everything she said, was telling him she wanted to draw a clear line between them.
Was that even possible?
She was thinking too simply.
He stared at her for a while, suppressing his anger as he spoke.
"Sure, construction has started, but it's not finished yet. If something goes wrong during construction, who am I supposed to turn to?"
Guessing he would make excuses to make things difficult, Scarlett had prepared her response. She calmly replied, "I'll explain all the important details to the construction supervisor. The other members of Team Three also know the details. They can handle it just as well."
"You're the designer. Nobody knows the details better than you. If you want to resign, you'll have to wait until this project is topped out."
His word was final. No room for negotiation.
Scarlett knew Ambrose was difficult to deal with, but his flat-out refusal was still beyond her expectations. Frustrated, she said.
"Since you won't let me resign, then let me make this clear—I'll only be responsible for the art museum project. I won't take on any other projects."
Ambrose crossed his arms, completely unbothered. "Of course. Take them if you want, don't if you don't. I won't force you."
Seeing how stubborn he was, Scarlett felt frustrated and glared at him angrily. As she glared, she saw him walking toward her. When he got close and reached out to touch her, she stepped back, not letting him make contact.
His hand hung in mid-air, then he said, "The art museum project is very important. We can't do without you. Once it's completed, if you want to resign, I absolutely won't stop you."
Scarlett lifted her eyelids and said huffily, "Your words have no credibility anymore."
Ambrose leaned against the desk, tilting his head to look at her. "Whatever you want to think."
Scarlett didn't want to talk to him anymore and turned to leave. But after just two steps, his voice drifted over.
"Just got word—there's a lead on your child."
Scarlett's departing steps came to an abrupt halt. After two seconds of stillness, she turned around. "Where?"
Her tone carried excitement. Ambrose had one hand on the desk, the other in his pocket, his posture relaxed. After a few seconds of pause, his low voice finally spoke.
"They found the person who took the child, but the child isn't with her anymore. She sold the child to someone else. They're looking for the buyer now."
Scarlett froze. Had her son been sold?
Was that person a human trafficker? But someone who could pay that much money couldn't be a trafficker!
Could they want the child's kidney or heart?
After having organs removed, could the child even survive?
At this thought, Scarlett's legs went weak and she collapsed toward the floor. Ambrose quickly stepped forward and caught her in his arms.
"Don't think crazy thoughts. Nothing will happen to the child. I'll bring him back when the time comes."
She looked up at him, her eyes misty with tears. "You said they haven't found him yet. How do you know nothing will happen?"
Ambrose looked at her small face, his Adam's apple bobbing twice. "The person who took the child said the buyer can't have children and bought the child to raise as their own son."
People always believed what they heard first. Even without seeing it with their own eyes, once they heard it, they believed it in their hearts.
Scarlett's heart settled down a bit. Her bright eyes looked at Ambrose. "When can you find the buyer?"
His deep eyes flickered. "I'll make it as fast as possible."
She said, "Thank you!"
As her voice fell, the room went quiet.
Scarlett noticed the change and looked at him. He was also staring at her, those emotionless deep eyes now tinged with a hint of displeasure.
They both understood clearly that this "thank you" had created distance between them.
Ambrose didn't like the distance. He reached out to hold her. Only then did Scarlett notice their intimate position and tried to push him away, but couldn't move him.
She glared at him. He stared at her. In their silent standoff, Ambrose's deep eyes held unclear whirlpools that seemed able to suck a person in. She couldn't take it and looked away.
"No need for thanks. Just don't think about resigning and leaving." Ambrose said.
She turned her gaze back. "These are two separate things. I can't just abandon my moral principles because you're helping me."
"What moral principles?"
Scarlett looked up and decided to speak plainly. "You're all over the gossip pages with Octavia on one hand, and trying to mess around with me on the other. Do you want to be with two women at the same time?"
Ambrose laughed, then quickly stole a kiss on her lips. But this one action made Scarlett angry. She pushed him hard, then kept wiping her kissed lips.
"Do you and Octavia have any STDs? Don't pass any viruses to me. Get away."
The smile on Ambrose's face froze. He never expected such a strong reaction from her. Angry yet not knowing what to do with her, he took a deep breath and said, "I never touched Octavia."
"Who would believe that?" Scarlett stood up, wanting to get away from him. This triggered Ambrose, and he grabbed her hand.
"The reporters made it all up."
"Made it up? Did you ever deny it? You really enjoy playing these ambiguous games, don't you? Ambrose, I may be a divorced woman, but that doesn't mean I'll degrade myself."
Scarlett struggled while making her point clear.
But with the disparity in strength between men and women, not only did she fail to break free, she was held even closer to him. "Listen carefully. I haven't touched any woman except you."
Scarlett laughed coldly in disbelief. "You never touched Octavia? Then how was Hayden born?"
Ambrose opened his mouth but couldn't speak. He couldn't reveal the truth about the child yet.
His hesitation looked ridiculous to Scarlett, and she actually laughed out loud. "Before you lie, maybe think about whether you can pull it off."
With that, Scarlett pushed him away forcefully and walked toward the door.
"Except for that night when I wasn't conscious, I've never been with any other woman." Ambrose's voice came just as her hand touched the door handle.
She paused, not wanting to continue this entanglement. She said coldly, "No need to explain anymore. Take your clothes with you. I'll focus on the art museum project for now. As for anything else, don't even think about it."
After speaking, she opened the door and stepped out of the study.
Ambrose angrily unbuttoned his collar. This couldn't go on.
Scarlett went to Hayden's room and packed up his clothes too, bringing them out to the living room. Hayden, who had been playing in the living room, saw his suitcase and ran anxiously to Scarlett.
"What's wrong? Why are you packing these things away?"
Scarlett composed herself and said gently, "Your clothes should go back to your house."
Hayden shook his head. "Scarlett, are you still mad at me? Actually, the last time when I ignored you, I was deliberately trying to upset you. It wasn't sincere. You wouldn't let me stay here, and I was really sad, so I acted that way. Please don't be mad at me, okay?"
Scarlett looked at his anxious expression and reached out to pat his head. "I'm not angry. It's just that you have your own home, and you should go back to it."
