Chapter 168 She Once Again Impresses Everyone
Briar was silent for a few seconds before replying, "No, he's Wilder, the one who was arranged to marry into the Reed family."
Scarlett paused, "Who?"
"The jerk who married into the Reed family, the one I used to like, but he didn't like me back." Briar's tone was full of contempt.
Wilder was someone she used to like. Back then, she really liked him a lot and followed him around everywhere, but he didn't care about her at all. Then somehow, Briar suddenly stopped pursuing him and never mentioned liking him again.
"How did he end up at your place?" Scarlett understood who the man was.
But they'd lost contact long ago. Why did Wilder suddenly show up again?
"No idea what's wrong with him. I'd almost forgotten he existed. He's crazy." Briar cursed.
Hearing Briar's words, Scarlett asked, "But he just said you were taking a shower. Did you two sleep together?"
Briar paused on the other end. After a good ten seconds of silence, she finally spoke, "Don't get any ideas. I just got drunk and lay on the bed. Nothing happened at all."
Scarlett didn't know what had happened, but judging from the shower situation, Briar's words weren't very convincing.
"I showered because I didn't shower last night. I woke up reeking of alcohol, so I went to wash up. Don't overthink it. Nothing's going to happen between Wilder and me."
"Nothing? He suddenly came looking for you, that's really suspicious."
"Probably saw all the important people in Silverlight City supporting me and came to check things out. But I made him so angry just now that he almost exploded. I told him I was with Ruben, then put him down completely. He left in a rage."
Briar went through what had just happened. As she talked, she made herself laugh. Scarlett didn't laugh. Scarlett knew Briar was hurting inside.
"So when you said the Reed family people came to your door earlier, they also thought you had something going on with Ruben and wanted to call you back?"
"Don't worry, I saw through their true colors back then. I won't believe them easily."
Back when she was a young lady in the Reed family, she wasn't that favored. Now that her identity was exposed, she definitely wouldn't put up with it anymore.
The two talked for a while. Scarlett told her to be careful and to reach out if anything happened, and then they ended the call.
After hanging up, Scarlett sat on the sofa in a daze. Briar hadn't had it easy these years either, and she herself had gotten through these years only with Briar's support. She didn't want anything to happen to Briar.
After thinking it over, she called Ambrose.
When the call connected, Ambrose joked around, "Just left and already calling, miss me?"
Scarlett was helpless.
She didn't chat with him, getting straight to the point, "Can you lend me two bodyguards?"
"You have bodyguards around you." After saying this, Ambrose thought of something, "What do you need bodyguards for?"
Scarlett straightforwardly said the bodyguards were for Briar, then briefly explained Briar's situation, finally saying.
"At the end of the day, this is something you guys caused. You have to guarantee her safety too."
It was indeed Ambrose's idea last night. If they hadn't sent the wine, the Reed family probably wouldn't have come bothering her, so Ambrose readily agreed.
After discussing business, Scarlett deliberately asked, "The child didn't make a fuss, did he?"
"How could he not make a fuss? But I told him we'd go again in a while, and then he calmed down." Ambrose told the truth.
This wasn't what Scarlett wanted to hear. She said unhappily, "You're giving him that kind of hope, what if he gets sick again later?"
"Right now I have to give him a little sweet expectation, otherwise if he makes a fuss and gets sick, won't you still have to come over?"
That was honest. She didn't want to see Hayden get sick either, so she said, "Send him to his mother. Once Hayden's with his mother, he won't think about other things."
Ambrose didn't say much, just agreed, "I will. When the time is right, I'll have his mother take care of him."
The two didn't talk long before ending the call.
Scarlett breathed a sigh of relief. Finally dealt with Hayden.
It was a workday again. Scarlett arrived very early in the morning. She still had a ton of things to handle. After two days of rest, she had her energy back.
At ten o'clock, she saw Cleo. Cleo secretly flashed her a look, but neither called out to the other.
Cleo was brought over by HR, then handed over to people from Department One. She was a designer hired for Department One.
After Cleo met everyone, she sat at her desk and messaged Scarlett.
"Happy to be working together again."
"Do your best!"
After that, the two didn't chat, and both got into work. But the rumors in the office about Scarlett being the design director spread wider and wider. As a newcomer, Cleo naturally wouldn't join in the discussions, but she would tell Scarlett everything she heard.
For two days straight, Cleo heard all kinds of rumors. She sighed.
"Excellent people get envied everywhere."
"Don't worry about it. Let them say whatever. Just do the work well." Scarlett replied.
"I thought the Boleyn Group was such a big company with strict management, there shouldn't be this kind of scheming."
Scarlett replied, "Wrong. The bigger the platform, the more serious the scheming."
"Okay, I agree with that."
On the third day, the company parachuted in a design director named Sable Nelson, a woman in her forties with short hair and a decisive manner.
On Sable's first day, she held a meeting and started laying down rules.
First, she began cleaning up the office atmosphere, saying employees who spread rumors would be kicked out of the company. Sable didn't name names, but everyone knew who she meant.
Then there was performance. She said Departments One and Two had to meet a certain standard this month.
Finally, she mentioned Scarlett's team, saying directly.
"Team Three reports directly to Mr. Boleyn. Naturally, I won't interfere much with the work, but I hope you'll report to me in a timely manner about things I should know."
When people left the office, their faces looked terrible, but their eyes all glanced at Scarlett, as if sympathizing or mocking.
The company used the new design director to break the rumors. Although Rhys had spread the worst talk behind the scenes, seeing this result, he felt better too.
After leaving the conference room, Scarlett looked at Rhys walking ahead, "Mr. Martinez, don't you owe me an apology?"
In front of everyone, Scarlett called out to him directly. Even if Rhys wanted to ignore it, he couldn't, and had to stop.
"Ms. Mellon, I don't quite understand what you mean." He played dumb.
"Playing dumb won't work. I've heard you making snide remarks behind my back several times. Don't try to deny it, I have recordings." Scarlett smiled at him.
Rhys's face fell on the spot. He had indeed said some things when she passed by, but he didn't expect that she wouldn't say anything then, and now that the new director had arrived, she was settling accounts with him.
"Since you heard it, why didn't you say anything then? Why wait until now?" Rhys's jaw was clenched tight.
"I always work with evidence. Even if I'd said it wasn't like that back then, you wouldn't have believed me. Why waste my breath?" With these words, Scarlett instantly made everyone feel ashamed.
They also understood that Scarlett had her principles for doing things, and she wasn't someone who could be bullied easily.
